Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can remove selected metadata from a JPEG without re-encoding its image data by parsing the file’s marker segments, omitting the segments you target, and copying the retained bytes unchanged. The important qualification is scope: removing EXIF does not necessarily remove XMP, IPTC/Photoshop data, comments, or C2PA provenance information. A hand-written TypeScript parser gives you control over that scope, but it also makes correct JPEG parsing and careful validation your responsibility.
What “without re-encoding” means
A JPEG file contains marker segments as well as compressed image data. A segment-level metadata remover edits the file’s structure: it identifies selected metadata segments and writes the other bytes through unchanged. It does not decode the pixels and encode a new JPEG, so this approach avoids the quality loss associated with lossy re-encoding.
That guarantee depends on the implementation. AIFelixAI’s metadata-remover repository describes copying retained bytes verbatim. That is the project’s implementation claim, not independent verification of every JPEG edge case or file produced by every camera and editor.
Decide which metadata to remove
“Strip EXIF” can mean removing only the EXIF payload, or it can mean broader privacy cleanup. JPEG metadata is divided among different marker types, so removing EXIF alone should not be described as removing all metadata.

| Data or segment | Why it matters | Example policy described by the repository |
|---|---|---|
| APP1 EXIF | May include camera details, timestamps, and location information such as GPS tags. | Remove; the repository says this includes GPS EXIF. |
| APP1 XMP and Extended XMP | Can carry descriptive or editing metadata separately from EXIF. | Remove. |
| APP11 JUMBF/C2PA | Can contain provenance or content-credential information. | Remove. |
| APP13 IPTC/Photoshop IRB | Can carry captions, creator details, and other editorial metadata. | Remove. |
| COM comments | JPEG comment segments may contain text metadata. | Remove. |
| APP2 ICC profile | Color-profile data may affect how image colors are rendered. | Preserve. |
| APP0 JFIF, coding tables, frame headers, and image data | These are not the targeted metadata categories in that example policy. | Preserve. |
This is one project’s policy, not a universal rule. ExifTool’s documentation describes distinct JPEG metadata families, and its FAQ cautions that color-space metadata may be needed to preserve color rendition: JPEG tags and ExifTool FAQ. In particular, deleting every APP segment indiscriminately can remove an ICC profile along with metadata you intended to discard.
Choose a parser or an EXIF library
Use a hand-written byte-level parser for a defined cleanup policy
A parser is appropriate when the product needs to remove more than EXIF, preserve non-target segments such as ICC, or operate directly on binary data such as a Uint8Array. You can define exactly which segment categories are removed and which remain. In return, you must implement marker traversal, bounds checks, malformed-file handling, and tests for the JPEG forms you support.

The metadata-remover README reports a policy that removes APP1 EXIF, XMP, and Extended XMP, APP11 JUMBF/C2PA, APP13 IPTC/Photoshop IRB, and COM comments while retaining APP0 JFIF, APP2 ICC, coding tables, frame headers, and image data. It also reports hand-built fixtures and cross-checks. Those are claims made by the project; they do not amount to an independent audit.
Use piexifjs when the task is specifically EXIF manipulation
piexifjs documents load, dump, insert, and remove(jpegData). Its documented JPEG input is a string beginning with data:image/jpeg;base64,, the JPEG start bytes, or Exif. This is a useful alternative when you need its EXIF API rather than a custom segment policy. Its removal documentation does not establish that XMP, IPTC/Photoshop, comments, or C2PA/JUMBF are removed as well.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The documentation also warns that piexifjs can set EXIF values without validating whether they reflect a real value. That warning is particularly relevant when writing tags; a removal-only workflow has a different risk profile, but still needs output verification.
Design the TypeScript byte-level operation
Keep the parser’s policy separate from its mechanics. First validate that the input is a JPEG your implementation supports. Then walk marker segments with bounds checks, classify each segment, and copy only the bytes your policy retains. When the parser reaches the entropy-coded image data, preserve it rather than searching through it for metadata-looking byte patterns.

- Validate framing. Check the JPEG start and establish how the implementation handles truncated files or unsupported structures. Reject input safely when you cannot parse it reliably.
- Walk markers according to JPEG structure. Read marker codes and segment lengths with bounds checks before advancing. Do not treat every occurrence of the byte value
FF E1as an EXIF segment: marker-like patterns can occur in compressed image data, where JPEG parsing rules matter. - Apply an explicit allow/remove policy. Identify the exact segment classes that should be dropped. For privacy cleanup, decide whether the policy includes EXIF, XMP, IPTC/Photoshop, comments, and JUMBF/C2PA; do not assume one category implies another.
- Copy retained bytes unchanged. Preserve the compressed image data and non-target segments, including APP2 ICC if color-profile preservation is part of the policy. Avoid a decode-and-encode path.
- Define failure behavior. Handle invalid lengths, truncation, unexpected marker order, and any unsupported JPEG variants by rejecting or reporting the input rather than emitting a possibly corrupted file.
The repository’s implementation is described as roughly 600 lines in the title premise, but the available cited sources do not verify a particular implementation’s line count. Treat line count as project-specific rather than a measure of completeness: robust edge-case handling and a clear removal policy matter more.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify both privacy scope and byte preservation
Test the output against fixtures representing the segment categories your policy claims to handle, including files with metadata you intend to retain. For each test, check two different properties: whether the targeted metadata is absent, and whether the retained image stream and non-target segments remain unchanged. A metadata viewer or independent inspection tool can help confirm the first property; byte comparisons and carefully constructed fixtures can help confirm the second.

- Include an EXIF fixture with GPS tags, and check that the location tags are gone if GPS removal is part of the policy.
- Include XMP, IPTC/Photoshop, comments, and JUMBF/C2PA where those categories are in scope; check each separately rather than inferring broad cleanup from EXIF removal.
- Include an ICC-profile fixture and verify that the profile survives if the implementation promises to preserve it.
- Compare the retained compressed image bytes rather than relying only on visual similarity, which cannot prove that no re-encoding occurred.
- Exercise malformed and truncated inputs to confirm the parser rejects them safely.
ExifTool’s JPEG documentation and FAQ can inform which metadata families and color-profile concerns to check, but the implementation-specific guarantees still need tests against the behavior you intend to ship.
