To find out whether a WordPress website can handle a traffic spike, simulate a gradually increasing, realistic workload while monitoring response times, errors, server resources, and the load generator itself. Start in staging when possible. Test the pages and actions that matter—not just repeated home-page requests—and set clear targets and stop conditions before any production test.

What a WordPress stress test tells you

A stress test deliberately increases simulated demand to reveal where a site slows down, errors, or stops serving requests acceptably. It estimates behavior under a defined workload; it does not produce a universal visitor-capacity number. The result depends on what you test, how long you test it, the site’s cache state, the hosting setup, and the limits you define.

Before running a test, write down the question you need answered: for example, whether a campaign landing page can withstand a surge, whether logged-in users can complete a workflow, or whether a store can serve a particular shopping journey. Set site-specific response-time and error targets, and state how long the workload must be sustained. There is no universal visitor count or response-time target established for all WordPress sites.

Choose the right pages and actions

List the URLs and user actions that represent the expected surge. Separate public pages that may be served from cache from personalized, authenticated, or transactional routes that are more likely to invoke PHP and database work. WordPress page requests can involve PHP, theme and plugin code, database queries, and external API calls; caching can reuse previously computed work. A test of cached pages therefore answers a different capacity question from a test of dynamic requests. See the WordPress performance optimization guidance and WordPress Hosting Handbook performance guidance.

  • For authenticated paths, use appropriate test accounts and data. Include them only when they are relevant and safe to exercise.
  • For WooCommerce, use a representative test journey and safe test data. Do not let a run create real orders, trigger real messages or payments, or invoke third-party services unintentionally. Inspect community scripts and their defaults before using them.

Select a test style

Choose the simplest test that answers your question. A protocol-level test is efficient for generating backend request load; a browser test includes more of the actual visitor experience. A hybrid approach can cover both, but takes more effort to run and interpret.

Approach Best suited to What it does not establish by itself
Protocol-based Endpoint, server, or infrastructure capacity at a substantial request volume. The complete real-browser experience or all frontend work.
Browser-based What users experience in a browser, including browser performance and frontend behavior. Backend capacity at the scale a protocol-level test may generate efficiently.
Hybrid A broad backend load test supplemented by a smaller number of browser journeys when both capacity and user experience matter. A simple interpretation: more test components mean more results to correlate.

Grafana’s guidance distinguishes browser-based testing for last-mile user experience from protocol-based testing for underlying infrastructure. Grafana k6 website load-testing guidance explains the website-testing options. k6 is an open-source tool for scripted load, stress, spike, and soak tests, and it also supports browser performance testing and automation. Its CLI is an option for local execution; hosted execution is optional for teams that need managed or distributed generation. Tool choice should follow your scripting needs, browser fidelity, desired scale, test location, and ability to interpret results—not a claim that one tool suits every site. See Grafana k6 documentation.

Prepare a safe, representative environment

Prefer staging or another pre-production environment for initial runs. It can reveal issues before release and generally allows more aggressive workloads, but it may differ from production in data, server resources, caching, and scaling behavior. A staging result is only as representative as the environment and workload behind it.

Production testing can reflect real infrastructure more closely, but it may affect customers. If it is necessary, use a limited workload, consider off-peak timing, confirm monitoring is working, and test a lower-risk scenario first. Define a stop condition before starting and stop or pause if real users are affected. Do not test systems you do not own or lack permission to test. Grafana states, “Don’t load test servers that you don’t own.” See Grafana’s website load-testing guidance.

  • Safe Line Testing & Simple Control: One-switch operation ensures straightforward testing. LED output displays wiring status, while the shield indicator identifies FTP/STP vs. UTP cables. Supports safe testing on telephone lines within standard operating voltages.

Also consider third-party dependencies. Avoid sending load to external services unless you have permission and a clear reason to include them. When the test is about your WordPress stack, disabling or safely isolating unrelated third-party requests can prevent the test from imposing unintended demand elsewhere.

Run the test in controlled stages

  1. Define the workload and pass criteria. Specify the relevant routes and actions, workload shape, duration, response-time and error targets, and any production stop conditions. Keep the criteria tied to the site’s service goals.
  2. Check the script with a smoke run. Start with minimal load. Verify the target host, authentication, test data, assertions, and cleanup. Confirm that the script does not perform unintended writes, payments, messages, or third-party calls.
  3. Increase demand gradually. Add load in planned steps or stages rather than jumping immediately to a large workload. Use realistic pacing and variation; users do not all need to arrive or act in lockstep. Include only requests that help answer the defined question.
  4. Watch the site and the generator. Track response times, throughput, errors, web and database resources, PHP behavior, cache hits or misses where available, and any scaling events. At the same time, monitor CPU, memory, and network use on the machine generating load.
  5. Stop when the run is unsafe or no longer useful. In production, pause or stop if customer impact appears, errors rise persistently, latency becomes unacceptable, or resources are exhausted. In staging, stop once you have reached the target workload or identified a bottleneck worth addressing. There is no universal numerical stop threshold; define one appropriate to the site before the run.
  6. Change one material factor and repeat. Compare outcomes to the predeclared criteria and workload. After changing a meaningful factor, such as caching or a resource limit, repeat under comparable conditions so you can assess the difference. Environment differences and a single run can make conclusions unreliable.

Grafana’s guidance for larger tests emphasizes checking the load generator: a saturated generator can distort the results or become the limit before the website does. See Grafana k6 guidance for running large tests.

Find the bottleneck in the WordPress stack

A slow or error-prone run does not identify its cause by itself. WordPress performance depends on the interaction of PHP execution, database queries, themes and plugins, cache behavior, hosting resources, network conditions, external APIs, software versions, and visitor geography. WordPress notes that without effective caching, rising requests can queue work and overload web or database servers; themes, plugins, versions, and distance between visitors and the site can also affect performance. Use server and application metrics to narrow down which layer reached its limit.

  • Cache: Check whether the test exercised the intended cache path and whether hits and misses changed during the run.
  • PHP and application code: Inspect PHP behavior and the cost of the themes, plugins, and actions involved in the scenario.
  • Database: Look for database resource pressure or query-related slowdowns while dynamic requests are under load.
  • External services: Determine whether an API or other dependency is slowing the request, while respecting its limits and permissions.
  • Hosting and network: Correlate web, database, and network resource use with latency, errors, and any scaling events.
  • Load generator: Confirm it had enough CPU, memory, and network capacity to produce the intended workload.

The WordPress Hosting Handbook gives a 256 MB recommended default PHP memory limit for a typical production site, describing it as a starting point rather than a guarantee. Memory-heavy workloads may need more, but that configuration figure is not a capacity result or a substitute for measuring the complete stack under your intended workload. See WordPress Hosting Handbook server environment guidance.

Use example scripts carefully

The WordPress k6 benchmark repository includes examples for static cache testing, general WordPress browsing, and WooCommerce. Treat them as scripts to inspect and adapt, not as a ready-made test for every site. Check target URLs, workload settings, authentication, data behavior, cleanup, and external calls before running one—especially against a live store.
