Yes. You can play prerecorded videos with different resolutions in one OBS playlist and send them to YouTube Live as a single stream. OBS outputs one configured resolution and frame rate; YouTube then transcodes that incoming feed into playback formats for viewers. The source files do not need to be matching quality variants.

How mixed-resolution videos work in a YouTube Live playlist

Your video files can have different dimensions, such as 720p and 1080p. OBS combines playback into one encoder feed, so the output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate you set in OBS apply to the stream as a whole. YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers can watch across devices and network conditions. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance explains its recommended settings.

This does not mean YouTube preserves each file’s original resolution as a separate live segment. OBS must render the playlist through its single configured output profile; lower-resolution clips may be scaled up, while higher-resolution clips may be scaled down.

Build the video playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source. If that source is missing, install VLC and restart OBS. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
  2. Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you will stream. Add the video files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
  3. Choose playback behavior. Set the source to loop if you want the list to repeat, or shuffle if you want files played in a different order. OBS documents both controls.
  4. Fit the source to the scene. Check the preview for cropping, letterboxing or empty space. Different aspect ratios can produce different framing; adjust the source in the scene if needed.
  5. Test transitions and sound. Play representative files, including files with different resolutions and audio, and inspect the change from one clip to the next. OBS and YouTube documentation describes playlist and ingestion behavior but does not guarantee seamless transitions for every codec, frame rate, dimension or audio layout.

Choose one stable OBS output profile

Set the output to a resolution and frame rate your computer can encode reliably and your upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate and codec; use the applicable row in its current encoder settings table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

For a concrete reference, YouTube lists 10 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. That is YouTube’s recommendation for that specific resolution, frame rate and codec, not a universal minimum or a guarantee that a connection will be stable. Choose a lower profile if your upload capacity varies, and test it under realistic conditions.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as a password; do not publish or share it.
  3. Start streaming from OBS and check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast. Resolve any video, audio or framing problems first.
  4. During the broadcast, watch stream health and monitor audio and video. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring the stream while it is live: see its live streaming tips.

What “playlist” means in YouTube’s HLS documentation

YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation uses “Media Playlist” to mean a list of media segments that make up a live transport stream. That is different from an OBS playlist of prerecorded video files. YouTube says its HLS ingestion supports Media Playlists and ignores Master Playlists; it transcodes the incoming stream for viewer playback itself. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS.

Rights and YouTube policy checks

Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the rights to every video and audio track in the playlist and that the content complies with YouTube’s policies. A playlist workflow does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material. Whether a particular set of files is cleared depends on the rights and permissions for that content; the documentation cited here cannot determine that for an individual playlist.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • VLC Video source is unavailable: Install VLC, then restart OBS so it can detect the required VLC components.
  • A clip looks blurry or oddly framed: The files have different source dimensions or aspect ratios, but OBS sends one output profile. Check the scene preview and adjust the source transform or output resolution to suit the content.
  • The stream buffers or loses health: The selected output profile may exceed the connection’s reliable upload capacity. Lower the resolution, frame rate or bitrate to a YouTube-recommended profile your connection can sustain, then test again.
  • A transition has missing audio, a pause or unexpected behavior: Test the specific files and their codecs, frame rates and audio layouts before the broadcast. Do not assume every combination will transition seamlessly.
  • YouTube preview does not show the expected stream: Confirm OBS is using the selected YouTube server URL and stream key, verify the encoder is running, and check the Live Control Room preview before going live.
