To stream vertical videos in a 24/7 YouTube Live channel, send a portrait (9:16) feed to YouTube using Live Control Room or an encoder, then keep the prerecorded playlist playing through an encoder or cloud playout service. YouTube supports vertical-only and simultaneous horizontal-and-vertical streams, but a continuous broadcast needs a plan for monitoring, recovery, and archives: YouTube says only streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
What a vertical 24/7 stream requires
Three pieces work together: portrait video, a live feed sent to YouTube, and a source that keeps supplying video after the first clip ends. A vertical presentation gives mobile viewers a full-screen experience and may be discovered in the Shorts feed. It does not, by itself, make prerecorded video loop continuously.
- A channel allowed to go live: it must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- A vertical feed: choose YouTube’s vertical layout or send a separate 9:16 feed from an encoder.
- A continuous playout source: use an encoder or cloud playout service configured to repeat the prerecorded material.
- Operations coverage: preview the output, monitor audio and video, and decide how to recover from an interruption and manage long-running archives.
YouTube describes both encoder workflows and cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded streaming tools. The service’s listing of a tool does not establish that tool’s current price or uptime. YouTube: Get started with live streaming

Choose vertical-only or dual format
Vertical-only
Choose a vertical feed when your videos are designed for portrait screens and mobile discovery is the priority. Vertical streams can appear in the Shorts feed, but they do not have every feature available to horizontal streams: YouTube lists clickable links in chat or the channel description, live ad pre-rolls and mid-rolls, and 4K bitrate streaming on the YouTube app among the unavailable features.

Horizontal and vertical together
YouTube supports simultaneous horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) delivery. For streams started through Live Control Room, YouTube describes vertical layouts such as center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. A third-party encoder can send a separate vertical feed over RTMP(S) using a second stream key. Both audiences share live chat; a dual stream also uses one stream URL and one subscriber go-live notification. Separate vertical metrics become available 24 hours after the stream.
Decide the format before starting. You cannot add the vertical format after the stream has begun. If you use two feeds, verify that the horizontal and vertical outputs are sent to their intended stream keys. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Set up the YouTube stream
- Check eligibility and enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow and follow the prompts to enable it. Verify the channel and check for restrictions. Allow up to 24 hours for initial activation.
- Create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room. Scheduling lets you promote the event in advance. Select the vertical layout you need. If you plan to send a separate vertical encoder feed, configure the RTMP(S) protocol and vertical stream key before starting.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into the playout source. Keep the key private: it functions like a password. Reset it if it may have been exposed. Confirm that each output is using the matching key.
- Preview before going live. Check framing, audio, playback order, and whether the portrait layout crops or stacks content as intended. Do not start the public broadcast until the preview is correct.

Configure video and bandwidth for portrait playback
Prepare a genuine portrait version where possible. If you feed landscape footage into a vertical layout, inspect the result on a phone: a center crop can cut off titles, faces, or other important details. Test the selected layout with representative clips before leaving the channel unattended.

Calculate outbound bandwidth using the total bitrate of all simultaneous feeds, including audio. YouTube recommends leaving around 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. This is operational guidance, not an uptime guarantee; check the actual outgoing feed during a preview and while live. For encoder preparation and monitoring advice, see YouTube live streaming tips.
Keep prerecorded videos playing around the clock
An encoder sends the live signal, but the playout source must also advance through clips and repeat the playlist. Before going live, confirm that the software or service can keep playing without someone manually restarting each file, and that it supports the portrait output you selected. YouTube’s encoder guidance identifies hardware encoders for higher-production workflows; dedicated hardware is optional, not a universal requirement. Compare input and output formats, vertical-layout control, monitoring, and recovery before choosing hardware, software, or cloud playout.

Plan what happens when a clip ends, a playlist reaches its last item, the encoder loses its connection, or YouTube drops the stream. YouTube recommends setting up encoders in advance, previewing the feed, and continuously monitoring audio and video. For a true 24/7 channel, assign someone to alerts and recovery or use a playout setup with a recovery process. Preparation advice is not a promise that a stream will never stop.
Plan for archives and copyright
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single continuous stream longer than 12 hours will produce an uninterrupted archive under that guidance. If you need recordings, decide in advance how to handle segments and restarts, and confirm YouTube’s current archive behavior before relying on a particular workaround. Only stream videos and audio you have the right to use. A live format does not make copyrighted material permissible. Review the rights for every clip, soundtrack, and other element in the playlist, and consider YouTube’s monetization rules for repetitive or reused material before building a channel around repeated playback. Use the copyright safety checklist to review permissions and risk points.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical option or live streaming is unavailable | The channel is not eligible, first-time activation is still pending, or the format was not selected before starting. | Check verification and live restrictions, allow up to 24 hours for activation, and configure the format before beginning the stream. |
| Viewers see the wrong orientation or a bad crop | The wrong layout or stream key is in use, or landscape material is being cropped for portrait. | Confirm each feed’s key and preview representative clips using the selected vertical layout. |
| Playback buffers or the feed becomes unstable | Available upload capacity may not provide the recommended headroom for the combined bitrate. | Check the total outbound bitrate, leave about 20% headroom, and monitor the outgoing stream. |
| The stream stops after a connection drop | The encoder or playout source has no active recovery procedure. | Check alerts and the source connection, then restart or restore the feed according to your operating plan. |
| A long broadcast has no complete automatic archive | The stream exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive condition. | Plan recording and segmentation separately; confirm current YouTube behavior rather than assuming an archive workaround. |
Run the feed yourself or use cloud playout
A local encoder or spare computer gives you direct control, but the playout device and connection must remain available, and someone needs to respond to interruptions. A cloud playout service can keep the uploaded playlist running without relying on a home computer. Compare the service’s format support, monitoring, and recovery arrangements before committing. YouTube lists cloud-based options for 24/7 prerecorded streams, but that listing is not a verification of current service pricing or reliability.
