You can use a Raspberry Pi as the encoder for a continuous YouTube broadcast, but the Pi does not make a stream guaranteed to stay online: power, internet, the encoder, YouTube’s systems and music rights all matter. Before building anything, confirm that you have permission to livestream every song and visual in your programme. Then prepare a compatible video, configure YouTube Live, send it from the Pi over RTMPS, and arrange monitoring and recovery.
First, clear the rights to the songs and visuals
Do this before assembling a playlist or testing it publicly. A song being available online, or a licence to play it in one setting, does not by itself establish permission to use it in a continuous YouTube livestream. Confirm that the rights cover the specific songs, the territories where you intend to broadcast, live streaming, and any replay or archive YouTube may make available. Check the rights to album art, film clips, still images and other visuals too.
YouTube Help says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A match can lead to a warning, a placeholder image, a temporary interruption or termination. For licensed third-party material, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a licence alone does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. Get the rights holder’s instructions and arrange allowlisting where required before going live.

Do not treat a successful private test as proof that the entire catalogue is cleared. Rights can differ by song, territory and permitted use, and the sources here do not establish the ownership or livestream permissions for any particular Tamil film song.

Choose a Raspberry Pi and an encoding approach
The board generation affects how you encode H.264. Raspberry Pi Ltd’s H.264 encoding performance note compares a Pi 4 hardware-encoder path using h264_v4l2m2m with Pi 5 software encoding using libx264. Do not assume a Pi 5 has a hardware H.264 encoder. The note is not a 24/7 reliability certification for either board.
- Pi 4: A hardware-encoding path may reduce the work done by the CPU, if the operating system and FFmpeg build you install expose the documented encoder.
- Pi 5: Plan for software H.264 encoding with
libx264. The load depends on resolution, frame rate and encoding settings, so test the exact programme on the actual board. - Either board: Start with a modest target such as 720p30 unless you have a reason and enough tested capacity for a higher resolution. Do not interpret a single successful run as proof of continuous uptime.
Use a stable power supply, a case and cooling appropriate to the board, wired Ethernet if available, and storage with enough free space for your programme and operating system. These choices help avoid preventable interruptions but cannot guarantee an uninterrupted service.
Prepare a continuous programme file
A single, pre-rendered programme is often easier to operate than a folder of files that must be joined live. Combine the songs you have permission to use with a visual you are allowed to broadcast, such as a static image or an appropriately licensed visual loop. Make the order and transitions intentional, then export one long file in a format your installed FFmpeg can read. Ensure the audio is present throughout and that the video does not end before the audio.

For a straightforward YouTube workflow, prepare the programme as H.264 video with AAC audio, using the resolution and frame rate you intend to broadcast. Check the output by playing it from beginning to end before uploading or copying it to the Pi. A file that already matches your target can be looped without encoding it again, which avoids making the Pi perform unnecessary video encoding during the broadcast.
Keep the programme file on the Pi or on storage mounted reliably at startup. If it is missing, corrupted or stored on a drive that disconnects, FFmpeg cannot continue playing it. Keep a separate copy of the source programme and a record of the rights attached to its contents.
Create the YouTube Live broadcast and get its encoder details
- Open YouTube Studio and create a live broadcast. Use the channel’s live-streaming controls and complete any eligibility steps YouTube shows for that channel. Requirements can vary by channel and may change; the sources here do not establish whether a particular channel is currently eligible.
- Choose the broadcast’s visibility and details. Set an accurate title, description and audience setting. Choose the visibility you want for a test; keep in mind that a private or unlisted test does not establish rights to go public.
- Open the encoder or stream settings for that broadcast. YouTube distinguishes the broadcast itself from the incoming encoder feed: the
liveBroadcastresource represents the broadcast, whileliveStreamrepresents the feed. The distinction is described in Google’s broadcasts and streams guide. - Copy the ingest address and stream key shown for the broadcast. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Use the RTMPS option where offered. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP.
- Keep the broadcast and feed settings available. You will need the encoder details when configuring the Pi. Do not publish or include the stream key in screenshots, public scripts, or support posts.
Set the video, audio and network targets
YouTube’s encoder settings list H.264, H.265 and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For a Raspberry Pi build using H.264, the platform’s recommended bitrates are 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed minimums for a particular home connection.

| Target | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
Use CBR for the outgoing stream and set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Leave upload headroom beyond the selected video bitrate for audio and network variation; the platform recommendations do not certify your internet connection. Test using the same router, connection and settings you plan to use for the broadcast. If the upload fluctuates or the stream health indicator reports problems, lower the target resolution or bitrate and test again.
Send the looping programme from the Pi
- Install FFmpeg from the package source for your operating system. The exact package and build vary by distribution. Check that the installed FFmpeg can read your programme file and supports the output method and encoder you intend to use.
- Put the programme on the Pi, for example at
/home/pi/continuous-tamil-program.mp4. Confirm the filename and that the file plays locally. - Enter the ingest details securely. In the examples below, set
YOUTUBE_INGEST_URLto the complete encoder destination formed from the ingest address and stream key supplied by YouTube. Store it in a private environment file readable only by the account running FFmpeg. Do not paste a real key into a public script or share it. The example assumes that the destination is in the format expected by your installed FFmpeg build. - Start a copy-through loop if the file is already prepared for YouTube. This sends the same encoded audio and video repeatedly rather than encoding them again on the Pi:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /home/pi/continuous-tamil-program.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL"
The -stream_loop -1 option repeats the input indefinitely, while -re reads it at its normal playback rate. Copy-through is appropriate only when the file’s codecs, frame rate, resolution and other properties are accepted by your selected YouTube settings. If the stream is rejected or the file is unsuitable, prepare a compatible programme file before switching to a live transcode.
- If you must encode during streaming, test the load first. A software H.264 example for an FFmpeg build with
libx264is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /home/pi/continuous-tamil-program.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL"
This example targets 720p30 at YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate of 4 Mbps, with a 60-frame group of pictures corresponding to a two-second keyframe interval. It is an example, not a guarantee that a given Pi can encode that workload continuously. Confirm the encoder is available, verify output resolution matches the programme, and reduce the workload if CPU use, heat or stream health becomes problematic. If you use a Pi 4 hardware encoder or a different target, encoder names and options depend on the installed system; use the Raspberry Pi note and the options available in your FFmpeg build rather than assuming this software command uses hardware encoding.

- Watch the YouTube live control room. Confirm that the incoming feed appears, the preview is correct, audio is audible, and stream health is acceptable before making the broadcast public. Check that the broadcast is actually live; an encoder feed and a broadcast are related but distinct YouTube objects.
Keep the stream running and recover from failures
A 24/7 setup needs a plan for both the programme loop and the things that can stop the encoder. The loop option handles the end of the input file; it does not restart FFmpeg after a crash, restore a network connection, fix a power failure or override a YouTube interruption.
- Restart the encoder process: Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd with a restart policy, or use another supervisor suitable for your Linux distribution. Verify that it restarts after a deliberate test stop and after a reboot.
- Start after networking is ready: Configure the service to wait for the network during startup, then check that it recovers if the router or internet connection goes down and returns. A process restart cannot make an unavailable connection work.
- Protect the stream key: Keep credentials in a restricted environment file rather than a script available to other users. Rotate the key in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Monitor the broadcast: Check the YouTube control room, the Pi’s temperature and process status, available storage, and the internet connection. If the stream is important, arrange an alert or a person to respond; no unattended configuration can diagnose every failure.
- Plan for power and storage problems: Use reliable power and check storage health and free space. A local power cut or failed storage can stop a Pi even if YouTube and the programme file were configured correctly.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a rights-related interruption is not something a Pi-side restart policy can resolve. Address a rights match with the rights holder and YouTube’s guidance rather than repeatedly restarting the same unapproved material.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming feed | Wrong ingest details, a hidden or malformed key, FFmpeg stopped, or no working network route | Check the broadcast’s current encoder details, confirm the private ingest value, inspect FFmpeg output, and verify the Pi can reach the internet. |
| Feed arrives but YouTube reports poor stream health | Upload instability, insufficient headroom, or an encoding target the Pi cannot sustain | Test the connection under broadcast conditions; reduce resolution or bitrate and check CPU load and temperature. |
| Picture is black, freezes or has no sound | Programme file issue, unsupported encoding properties, or an audio/video track that ends early | Play the complete file locally, confirm both tracks run for its full duration, and check that its codecs and settings fit the YouTube target. |
| The stream stops when the programme ends | The loop option is missing or the input cannot be reopened | Use -stream_loop -1 for a readable local file and check that storage remains mounted and available. |
| FFmpeg exits and stays stopped | No process supervisor or restart policy is configured | Inspect FFmpeg’s error output, fix the underlying problem, and configure and test a supervisor restart policy. |
| YouTube warns, replaces the image or interrupts the broadcast | A Content ID match or other rights issue | Review YouTube’s copyright notice, verify permission for the matched material, and ask the rights holder about channel allowlisting where applicable. |
Budget for the complete setup
The Pi board is only one part of the cost. Account for a compatible power supply, cooling and case, storage, internet service, and any backup or monitoring you decide to use. Hardware stock and prices depend on location and date, and no current parts price is established here. Likewise, the recommended video bitrate is not a promise that your internet plan has enough reliable upload capacity.
