You can use VLC to play and send a playlist of Tamil devotional videos to YouTube Live, but an all-day broadcast depends on more than pressing Play: your channel must be eligible, the stream output must match YouTube’s encoder requirements, your upload connection must be stable, and you must have rights to every song and video. VLC’s documentation covers streaming output and playlist looping in general; it does not establish a turnkey, reliably unattended VLC-to-YouTube setup. Test your exact VLC build and settings with a private or unlisted stream before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube may require you to enable live streaming before the first broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- A computer that can play your Tamil devotional video files and run VLC for the entire time you intend to broadcast. In this do-it-yourself method, shutting the computer down stops the source stream.
- A reliable internet connection with upload capacity above the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom; network disruptions can break a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Video and audio files that VLC can play, arranged in the order you want viewers to hear and see them.
- Permission to stream the recordings, compositions, performances, and visuals. Religious or devotional subject matter does not exempt a video from copyright rules.
Prepare and test your VLC playlist
Check the files and sequence
Open each file in VLC before building the broadcast. Confirm that its picture and audio play correctly, then add the files to a playlist in the intended order. Check transitions, audio levels, and whether the playlist ends or repeats as expected. VLC supports stream output and can transcode media for network delivery, but the VideoLAN documentation does not specify a ready-made YouTube Live configuration for every VLC version or operating system. Set the playlist to repeat
VLC’s VLM documentation describes looping a broadcast input list so it restarts after its final item. That establishes a general looping capability, not proof that a particular VLC setup will keep a YouTube stream connected indefinitely. Review the VLC VLM documentation, then verify that your specific playlist repeats correctly in a test broadcast.

Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and use the live-stream workflow to create or schedule an encoder stream. If this is your first stream, complete any channel verification or live-stream enablement steps shown there.
- In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding destination settings in VLC’s stream-output configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported by the encoder. Its key is sensitive: YouTube describes it as similar to a password and address, so do not publish or share it. Reset it if you think it has been exposed.
- Keep the stream private or unlisted while testing. Start VLC’s output and wait for YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before starting the public broadcast.
Exact VLC menu labels and available destination options can vary by release and platform. YouTube’s steps for creating an encoder stream are documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Do not assume that a stream key alone makes an unsupported VLC output configuration compatible.

Choose compatible output settings
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Follow the settings supported by your encoder and confirm the resulting preview and health status in YouTube Studio. The current recommendations are in YouTube’s encoder settings guide.

These are YouTube’s published encoder bitrate figures, not a guarantee of visual quality. Match output resolution to the source and choose a bitrate your encoder and internet connection can sustain. For mostly static devotional imagery, 30 fps may be adequate; that is a practical choice, not a YouTube requirement. Check YouTube’s guide for other resolutions and modes.

Test the whole chain before going public
- Set the stream to private or unlisted in YouTube Studio and start VLC’s output.
- Wait for the preview. Confirm the correct video, audio, aspect ratio, and playlist behavior. Listen for clipping, silence, or unexpected gaps, and watch through a transition between files.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health status. If the stream does not appear or the preview is faulty, stop and fix the VLC destination, key, codecs, or bitrate before making the stream public.
- Measure upload performance at the location and time you plan to broadcast. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the total bitrate, including audio. A wired Ethernet connection may help avoid some local Wi-Fi instability, but YouTube requires a reliable connection, not Ethernet specifically.
- Run the test long enough to confirm the playlist loops and to expose ordinary connection or playback problems. A short successful preview does not prove unattended all-day reliability.
Confirm music and video rights
You need the necessary rights for the specific recordings, compositions, performances, and visuals in your stream. A devotional song may have a protected sound recording or composition even when the underlying religious text is traditional. YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content; a match may result in a warning, placeholder image, interruption, or termination. If you have a license, check whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and its livestream terms and conditions before broadcasting.
Plan the broadcast length and archive
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not establish an unlimited single-stream duration, so do not treat “all day” as a guarantee of one uninterrupted stream or indefinite archiving. Decide how you will handle the intended run length, check the current Live Control Room options, and verify archive behavior with a test before relying on the recording.

Troubleshoot common problems
