Microsoft’s real-time transcription endpoint is specifically named MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming. Microsoft Learn labels it public preview, says it has no SLA, and does not recommend it for production workloads. The instructions below describe Microsoft’s documented Realtime API path; check the current guidance before deploying because preview details and regional availability can change.

What you need before streaming

Microsoft’s documented prerequisites are an Azure subscription, a Microsoft Foundry resource in a supported region, and a deployment of MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming. Confirm the region for the integration you plan to use: Microsoft’s Realtime API and Speech SDK guides currently show slightly different region lists.

  • A live audio source, such as a microphone, or audio supplied by your application.
  • A Microsoft Entra bearer token or an API key for the resource.
  • A client capable of opening a WebSocket connection and sending JSON messages.

A USB microphone is optional; any suitable audio source can feed the application. Microsoft’s guide does not endorse a particular hardware model.

How to stream speech transcription with the Realtime API

The Realtime API uses a WebSocket endpoint under your resource. Microsoft’s guide also shows the transcription intent in the request URI:

Authenticate with a Microsoft Entra bearer token or an api-key. The guide documents the API key in a connection header, and also describes a query-string key option. Treat the key as a secret and use the authentication method supported by your client and deployment.

  1. Open the WebSocket. Connect to the endpoint using the resource name and authenticate the request.
  2. Configure the session before sending audio. Send a session.update message selecting a transcription session and your deployed model name, MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming. Configure the input format as raw mono signed little-endian PCM16 at either 16,000 or 24,000 samples per second. You may leave the language unset for automatic detection or provide a language code; unrecognized values are treated as unset.
  3. Append audio as it is captured. Send nonempty PCM16 audio bytes, base64-encoded, in input_audio_buffer.append messages. Send the raw PCM bytes only—do not include a WAV header.
  4. Consume transcription events. Keep separate accumulated finalized text and a replaceable provisional suffix, as described below.
  5. Commit at a pause or when capture ends. Send input_audio_buffer.commit to commit the buffered audio. Use the resulting completed event as the final transcript for audio since the previous commit.

How to handle partial and final transcript events

The key to a stable live display is treating the event types differently. A delta carries newly finalized text: append it to the accumulated transcript exactly as delivered. An intermediate event carries a provisional suffix: replace the previous provisional suffix with the latest one, rather than appending it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Conceptually, render the transcript as:

accumulated delta text + latest intermediate suffix

When a later delta finalizes text that was provisional, add the delta to the finalized portion and update or clear the provisional suffix according to the incoming events. Do not insert or strip spaces around deltas; Microsoft cautions that the text should be appended exactly as delivered. At commit, the completed event contains the full final transcript since the prior commit, which you can use to replace the displayed hypothesis for that committed audio.

Do not expect one response per audio append. Microsoft notes that an append may produce no transcript event or multiple events, and the API does not provide a one-to-one acknowledgement for every append. Build the interface around transcript events, not presumed append acknowledgements.

Audio format and chunking

  • Encoding: signed little-endian PCM16, mono.
  • Sample rate: 16 kHz or 24 kHz.
  • Message payload: base64 audio bytes in input_audio_buffer.append.
  • Header: no WAV header; provide raw PCM bytes.

Microsoft recommends small chunks, such as 10–20 ms, to minimize latency. Larger chunks reduce network overhead but can increase the delay before the service receives the audio. Your capture pipeline must therefore convert or configure its output to the documented PCM format before encoding it for transmission.

The current Realtime API guide lists Sweden Central, Central US, and South India as available, with East US 2 marked coming soon. The Speech SDK guide instead lists Southeast Asia in place of South India, so verify the region list on the exact integration page and confirm availability for your resource before creating a deployment.

Realtime API or Azure Speech SDK?

Microsoft documents two integration routes. Choose based on how much transport behavior you want to own and what your application already uses.

Integration What Microsoft documents Best fit
Realtime API WebSocket interface; your application sends audio and handles connection behavior and transcript events. Applications with an existing Realtime-compatible WebSocket client or a need for direct protocol control.
Azure Speech SDK Managed-client route; Microsoft positions it for connection management, retries, and audio streaming handled by the client library. The guide lists Azure Speech SDK v1.52.0 as a prerequisite in its current documentation. Applications that prefer SDK-managed streaming and connection behavior. Check the current SDK version and setup instructions in Microsoft’s guide.

Both routes support intermediate and final transcription results. Region availability can differ between their guides, so select the integration and validate its supported region before building around it.

Preview status and production considerations

Microsoft Learn describes MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming as public preview, without an SLA, and not recommended for production workloads. That caveat matters for applications where transcription availability or service commitments are critical. Microsoft’s October 1, 2026 corporate announcement makes a ranking claim in its title, but it is not a substitute for independently assessed benchmark methodology and does not change the preview status.
