You can stream a recorded sermon stored on a Synology NAS to YouTube Live by using the NAS for file storage and a computer running OBS for playback and encoding. Add the sermon as an OBS Media Source, connect OBS to a scheduled YouTube Live event with its stream URL and key, then start the event in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature is for live camera streams; it does not document playing a sermon file from the NAS.

What you need

  • A completed sermon video stored on a Synology NAS share.
  • A computer that can access that share and run OBS while the stream is active. This network-share arrangement is a practical setup; Synology’s documentation does not validate it as an end-to-end prerecorded-stream recipe.
  • A YouTube account with access to YouTube Live, and a scheduled live event configured in YouTube Studio.
  • A stable internet connection from the computer running OBS. The exact bandwidth required depends on the stream settings and is not specified by the cited setup instructions.

The computer is the encoder: it reads the video from the NAS, plays it in OBS, and sends the live signal to YouTube. The NAS does not take the place of OBS in this workflow. OBS’s instructions cover local media files, so first confirm that the OBS computer can open the sermon file from the NAS share.

Set up OBS to play the sermon

For one sermon recording

  1. Open OBS and create or select the scene for the service.
  2. In the Sources box, select + and add a Media Source.
  3. Choose the sermon video file from the NAS share. If the share is not visible, make sure it is connected and accessible to the computer before continuing.
  4. Choose whether to enable Loop. With looping enabled, OBS repeats the file when playback reaches the end; leave it off if the recording should play once.
  5. Check the preview. Resize or fit the source to the canvas as needed, and confirm the picture and sermon audio are present.

For a playlist of recordings

  1. Install VLC on the computer running OBS.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the sermon files to its playlist.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist if the playlist should repeat continuously.
  4. Use compatible 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS; OBS specifically notes that 64-bit VLC is required for 64-bit OBS.
  5. Preview the playlist and verify that it advances between recordings as intended.

OBS documents Media Source playback and looping, and VLC Video playback for playlists. A playlist is useful for recurring programming; a single Media Source is simpler when the event consists of one sermon.

Schedule the YouTube Live event and connect OBS

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and schedule the live event. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides the stream URL and stream key for connecting broadcasting software.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if available, then enter or paste the server URL and stream key supplied for the scheduled event. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to that event.
  3. Apply the settings, then start streaming from OBS at the agreed time.
  4. Check the Live Control Room preview before making the stream available to viewers. For a scheduled event, YouTube’s instructions also require the go-live step in Live Control Room; starting the encoder alone may not complete that step.
  5. After the sermon, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop sending from OBS.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. This is useful for a normal-length service, but do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for a stream lasting 12 hours or more.

Test before announcing the stream

Run a private or unlisted test with the actual NAS file, OBS computer, YouTube account, and internet connection you intend to use. This is a recommended operational check, not a guarantee of model-specific compatibility or uninterrupted service.

  • Confirm the video appears in the Live Control Room preview and fills the frame correctly.
  • Listen for sermon audio in the preview and check that it is synchronized with the picture.
  • Check how playback behaves at the file’s end: it should stop or loop according to the Media Source setting.
  • If using a playlist, confirm the next item starts and that looping works if enabled.
  • Verify that the scheduled event can be taken live from Live Control Room and that you can end it cleanly.

Why Synology Surveillance Station is not the prerecorded-file encoder here

Synology’s documented Live Broadcast feature in Surveillance Station starts with a selected camera and stream profile, then uses a YouTube RTMP path and key. Synology describes support for H.264, but this camera-focused workflow does not document selecting a previously recorded sermon file from the NAS and broadcasting it. Surveillance Station is video-management software for Synology systems, but that broader description does not establish that a particular NAS model or package can encode and stream stored sermon files without a separate computer or compatible software.

Choosing between a one-time sermon and continuous programming

Approach Best fit What it does
OBS Media Source One recorded sermon Plays one file, optionally looping it, from a computer that can access the NAS share.
OBS VLC Video playlist A sequence of recordings Plays a playlist and can loop it; VLC must be installed and compatible with OBS.
OBS on an attended computer A scheduled event that someone can start and monitor The computer plays and encodes the recording and sends it to YouTube; it must remain available while streaming.
Cloud-based continuous streaming Recorded programming intended to run continuously A service listed by YouTube may handle an always-on prerecorded stream in the cloud. Verify its current requirements, price, and fit for your church before relying on it.

The official setup instructions establish how OBS media playback and YouTube’s encoder and scheduling flow work; they do not establish comparative reliability, price, or suitability for a particular church. Choose according to whether the event is a single attended broadcast or ongoing programming, and test the complete path with your own files and account.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep recorded programming live on YouTube without leaving a church computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the sermon recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed. Nothing needs to stay on at home or at the church, it accepts video up to 4K 60fps as uploaded at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.

Common problems and fixes

OBS cannot open the sermon on the NAS

Check that the computer can access the NAS share and open the file outside OBS. Reconnect the share or correct its permissions, then select the accessible file path in the Media Source.

The YouTube preview does not appear

Confirm OBS is streaming, the event’s stream URL and key are correct, and the scheduled event is open in Live Control Room. Complete YouTube’s go-live step there when required. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

There is no sermon audio

Check that the source is playing, the OBS audio mixer shows activity, and the audio is not muted. Listen to the YouTube preview during testing rather than relying only on the OBS meters.

The stream stops when the computer is shut down

In the OBS method, the computer is doing the playback and encoding. It must stay running with OBS active for the broadcast. For continuous unattended playback, consider a cloud streaming workflow instead.

Copyright and YouTube account checks

Before broadcasting, confirm the church has permission to use the sermon recording and every included element, such as music, images, or clips. A recording being stored on the church’s NAS does not itself establish rights to livestream it. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements for the account, and test privately or unlisted before the public service. This setup guide does not establish a specific account’s eligibility or guarantee that a stream will avoid a copyright claim.
