To stream a recorded sermon as a YouTube event, schedule an encoder livestream in YouTube Studio, set its title and thumbnail in the event details, then send the recording to its stream URL and key through an encoder. You can reuse a previous stream’s settings as a template, but review the copied details each time: YouTube does not permanently lock the title or thumbnail. If viewers only need the sermon to appear at a chosen time, schedule it as an ordinary video instead.
Choose a livestream or a scheduled video

For an ordinary upload, use YouTube Studio’s scheduling option when setting the video’s visibility and publication date. For a live event, continue with the encoder workflow below.
Check eligibility before the service day
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; the minimum age for live streaming is 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so activate and confirm access well before the service. Schedule the sermon livestream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage.
- Select Schedule Stream. Create a new event, or use Reuse settings if an earlier stream is a suitable template.
- Review the copied details before saving. Reuse copies metadata, settings, and the stream key; it does not guarantee the information is correct for the current sermon.
- Set the event date and time, then save. Review the event page and its details before sharing the watch-page URL with the congregation.
YouTube’s live stream settings guidance describes editing the stream details and reusing settings. Reuse is useful for a consistent weekly format, but treat a copied stream key as a credential and keep it private.

Set a repeatable title and thumbnail
Use a title pattern, not a permanent lock
Keep a house title format in your church’s planning notes or template, such as “Sunday Worship | [Sermon Title] | [Date].” Replace the sermon title and date for each event, save the details, then check the scheduled event as a viewer would see it. Since stream metadata can be edited, consistency depends on reviewing the saved event rather than assuming YouTube has locked it.
Upload and verify the thumbnail
- Open the scheduled stream’s details in YouTube Studio and use its thumbnail control to upload the church’s custom image.
- Use a 16:9 image. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels and a width of at least 640 pixels; JPG and PNG are supported.
- Save, then reopen or revisit the event details to confirm the intended image and title are displayed before distributing the event link.
YouTube requires a verified account for custom thumbnails. Its stated upload limits are 50 MB on desktop and 2 MB for video thumbnails on mobile. Limits may vary by device, channel history, and region; check the current Studio interface. Thumbnail changes can take time to appear. Connect an encoder and select the recording
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the scheduled event.
- Enter the URL and key in your encoder’s YouTube or custom-stream destination settings. Do not show the key in screenshots, handouts, or public posts; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to the stream.
- In the encoder’s own interface, select the sermon recording as the source and configure playback as needed. The exact file-selection and playback steps depend on the encoder; YouTube does not provide one universal local-file playback button or procedure.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview before starting the event. Confirm the recording’s audio and video are coming through as intended.
YouTube’s encoder workflow covers the stream URL and key, while file playback depends on the software you use. Do not assume that a recording will loop or restart automatically unless you have confirmed that behavior in your encoder.

- Allow time for checks. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes ahead. These are operational recommendations, not guaranteed requirements.
- Check the preview before going live. Confirm picture, audio, and the intended sermon file in Live Control Room.
- Check viewer access. Open the watch page from the channel and test it on a mobile device, preferably using an account or browser session separate from the operator’s.
- Monitor the stream. Keep an operator available to watch audio and video integrity and respond if the feed fails.
- Finish deliberately. Stop the encoder and end the event in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; verify the resulting replay and its metadata afterward.

Keep the weekly event consistent
A simple repeatable process helps prevent last week’s date, sermon title, thumbnail, or stream key from carrying forward unnoticed:
- Reuse the prior stream only if its settings suit this service.
- Update the event date, title, description, and thumbnail, then save and inspect the scheduled event.
- Confirm the correct stream key is in the encoder and keep it private.
- Run the preview and watch-page checks before the congregation arrives.
YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery apart from helping with common misspellings, so they are not a substitute for an accurate title and clear event details. A trailer is optional; YouTube’s eligibility guidance says scheduled-stream trailers require more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes, and must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long.

Troubleshoot common problems
The stream will not start
Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that the channel meets eligibility requirements. If this is the first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours. Confirm the encoder has the correct stream URL and key for this scheduled event.
The wrong event details appear
Open the scheduled event in Studio and check its saved title, date, and thumbnail. If you reused settings, correct any copied metadata before sharing the watch-page link. Allow time for thumbnail changes to appear.

The preview is blank or has no sound
Check the encoder’s selected file and source settings, confirm the recording plays in the encoder, and verify that the correct stream destination is configured. YouTube’s instructions do not specify the file-playback controls for every encoder, so consult that encoder’s own guidance for its media source and audio routing.
Viewers cannot open the event
Confirm the event is scheduled and that you shared its watch-page URL rather than a Studio control-room link. Test access from a mobile device and check the event’s visibility and saved details in Studio.
The archive is missing or incomplete
Check the stream duration and the event’s processing status, then review the channel’s video list and the archived video’s details. YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams shorter than 12 hours; verify the actual replay rather than assuming the saved version is complete.
