You can stream recorded church sermons around the clock by running encoder software on a Google Cloud virtual machine (VM), sending its output to a YouTube Live stream. First make sure the channel is eligible for live streaming; then provide the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and private stream key, configure the media to match YouTube’s ingest recommendations, and test monitoring and recovery before relying on it. A VM does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming, and the right machine size and total cost depend on your files, encoding workload, region, and resilience needs.
Before you set up the VM, make sure the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility and activation before building a continuous setup. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
You will also need sermon video files, an encoder capable of sending a live feed, and a way to monitor the YouTube stream. YouTube supports software encoders as well as hardware encoders; a hardware encoder is not required for prerecorded files. YouTube’s encoder guide lists software options, including OBS.
Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, or select an existing stream.
- In the stream settings, obtain the stream URL and stream key. A custom reusable stream key is available in stream settings if you want to reuse a configured destination.
- Give the URL and key to your encoder. Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room when your encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP protected with TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s instructions for managing live-stream settings and its encoder connection guidance.
Treat the key as a password. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not expose it in public scripts, shell history, logs, source control, or screenshots. Store it using an access-controlled secret or configuration mechanism, and restrict who can read it.

Prepare a Google Cloud VM for the encoder
The VM must be able to read the sermon media and send outbound traffic to YouTube. Decide first whether the encoder will simply relay already-encoded video or transcode it. Transcoding requires more compute than relaying, so do not choose a machine type from the stream resolution alone.
Provide media access and outbound connectivity
Place the files where the encoder can access them, such as on an attached disk or another storage location you have configured. Plan enough storage for the library and any working or archive files. For network access, a VM can use an external IP; Google Cloud also documents Cloud NAT for IPv4 outbound access when a VM has no external IP. Choose capacity from the actual workload
There is no evidence-based universal VM size for this job. The right choice depends on whether you transcode, the codec and frame rate, concurrent processing, media storage, region, and your recovery expectations. Start with a configuration suited to the encoder’s actual work, then test CPU, memory, disk throughput, and stream stability under load before leaving it unattended. The cited Google Cloud guidance does not validate a specific machine type or encoder command for continuous sermon streaming.
Match the encoder to YouTube’s ingest settings
Set the encoder to the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to send, and use YouTube’s current recommendations for that combination. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. At 1080p and 30 frames per second, the recommended bitrate is 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps for H.264. Other formats have their own recommendations in YouTube’s encoder settings table.

Use the RTMPS stream URL from Live Control Room if supported by your encoder, and enter the stream key through a private configuration method. Avoid copying commands from unverified examples: the exact encoder syntax varies by software, and a command that exposes the key can leak access to your stream.
Test the complete stream before leaving it on
- Start a private or unlisted test stream and confirm that YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed.
- Inspect the preview for correct picture, audio, aspect ratio, and timing. Then verify playback as a viewer using the intended access setting.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm that the bitrate and video quality remain stable over time.
- Test the recovery plan: for example, confirm how an operator will detect a stopped encoder or VM and restart it. If using a local archive, check that the archive is intact and continues to grow as expected.
- Set up monitoring and alerts appropriate to the deployment, and decide who will respond if the VM, encoder, network connection, or YouTube ingest fails.
YouTube recommends testing and checking stream quality; its guidance also advises testing failover and verifying archive integrity and growth where archives are used. Those checks are important because a cloud VM alone does not make delivery fault-tolerant. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting and quality guidance.

Account for the full Google Cloud bill
Google Cloud lists data transfer from a VM to YouTube as no charge in its network pricing information, as checked on October 3, 2026. That applies to this traffic category, not to the entire deployment. VM compute, disks, IP addresses or NAT, and other resources may still incur charges. Estimate the resources in the region and configuration you will actually use, and check current terms before deployment. See Google Cloud network pricing and Compute Engine pricing.
Google Cloud’s sustained-use discount documentation, checked on October 3, 2026, describes an Always Free allowance equivalent to the total hours in the current month for one e2-micro VM; it also says Always Free use does not receive sustained-use discounts. Eligibility and terms depend on the account and current offer, so verify them directly rather than treating the allowance as a guaranteed cost for a production stream. Copyright and YouTube policy still apply to prerecorded sermons
Having permission to upload a sermon recording does not automatically clear every element in it. Music, performances, photographs, clips, and other embedded material may have separate rights. Confirm that the church has permission for the content and its continuous public use, and review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules before starting. Repeated or disputed use can interrupt a stream or affect the channel.
