To stream a prerecorded property tour from a Mac mini, use YouTube Live’s encoder workflow: create or schedule an event in YouTube Studio, send its stream URL and private stream key from OBS, check the Live Control Room preview, then select Go Live. A sensible starting profile for a 16:9 tour is H.264 at 1080p30, 10 Mbps CBR, AAC audio, and a two-second keyframe interval—provided your source video and internet upload can sustain it.

What you need before the property-tour stream

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check well before event day: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  • A Mac mini running macOS 13 or newer if you plan to use the current OBS macOS download. OBS provides separate Intel and Apple Silicon downloads; choose the build that matches your Mac on the official OBS download page.
  • A finished tour video, a reliable wired or wireless internet connection, and enough upload bandwidth for the stream. A title card, property details, narration, or ambient audio are optional production choices.

YouTube calls this an encoder stream: software or hardware sends a prepared program feed to YouTube. OBS is a free, open-source software encoder for Mac. Apple’s 2024 Mac mini specifications list M4 and M4 Pro models with hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW encoding and decoding, but those capabilities do not guarantee that a particular OBS scene and stream profile will run smoothly. OBS likewise cautions that compatible hardware does not guarantee streaming or recording capability at a chosen workload (OBS system requirements; Apple Mac mini (2024) technical specifications).

Set up the YouTube Live event and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, choose to create a live stream and either schedule the event or prepare it to start when ready. Enter the title, description, visibility, and any other event details. Use an unlisted test event for rehearsals if you do not want the test broadcast publicly visible.
  2. Open the event’s Live Control Room and locate its stream settings. Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream configuration. The precise labels can vary with YouTube or OBS updates; use the event’s displayed ingest details and OBS’s YouTube streaming setup.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in screenshots, descriptions, or recordings. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before the real broadcast.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. Use the normal YouTube RTMPS profile in OBS unless you have a specific reason to use another ingest protocol. YouTube also supports HLS for cases where an encoder needs capabilities RTMP(S) does not provide; HLS uses segmented transmission and has higher latency. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Prepare the tour in OBS

  1. Download OBS from its official download page, selecting the Intel or Apple Silicon build appropriate to the Mac mini. The page currently lists macOS 13.0 or newer as the requirement.
  2. Configure OBS to send the YouTube stream URL and key for the event. Add the prepared tour video as the main visual source and arrange any title card, property information, narration, or ambient audio that belongs in the program. OBS’s exact current media-source and playback controls are not specified here, so consult the controls in your installed OBS version rather than relying on unverified menu names.
  3. Match the canvas and output to the tour’s actual aspect ratio and resolution. For a standard 16:9 source, avoid stretching or cropping important property details. If you add audio, listen for clipping, low volume, or unintended silence during rehearsal.

Use a conservative encoding profile, then match it to your connection

For a straightforward prerecorded 16:9 tour, start with these YouTube H.264 settings if the source supports them:

Setting Starting point Why it matters
Ingest protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest.
Video codec H.264 Use the H.264 recommendations for the bitrate figures below.
Resolution and frame rate 1080p at 30 fps A practical starting point for a typical tour; do not upscale a lower-resolution source simply to select a larger output.
Rate control CBR Constant bitrate is part of YouTube’s recommended encoder configuration.
Video bitrate 10 Mbps YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 1080p30.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
Audio AAC YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio; AAC is a suitable starting choice.

These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every Mac mini or source file will perform identically. Select a frame rate and resolution the source and Mac can handle, and check the actual stream. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate rises to 17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 42 Mbps for 2160p30. Higher output settings need a correspondingly stronger upload path; an M4 or M4 Pro media engine alone is not a reason to choose 4K.

YouTube recommends running a speed test and keeping 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate. For a 10 Mbps video stream, that rule implies planning for about 12 Mbps of available upload for that stream. This is arithmetic based on YouTube’s margin recommendation, not a separate YouTube-published threshold. Include any concurrent feed or other upload traffic when assessing the connection. YouTube’s advice is direct: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.”

Rehearse, go live, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Schedule time for setup. YouTube advises configuring the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start (YouTube streaming tips).
  2. Rehearse the full video and audio path using representative movement and sound. Start OBS and check that the feed appears in the event’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm framing, playback, audio level, and that no private material appears on screen.
  3. Wait for the preview and stream health to look ready, then select Go Live in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder sends the feed; it does not by itself mean the event has been made live to viewers.
  4. During the broadcast, monitor the image, sound, and YouTube stream-health warnings. If health degrades, check the connection and encoder output before increasing quality or bitrate.
  5. When the tour is over, end the event in YouTube and stop the feed in OBS. Confirm the event appears on the relevant channel or watch page and, if you are recording locally, that the local file is growing.

YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Check the event afterward if you need to retain or share the replay; do not treat the YouTube archive as a substitute for a local recording when you need your own copy.

Choose software or hardware encoding for this production

For a single prerecorded tour with few inputs, OBS is a reasonable low-cost starting point. YouTube supports both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. A hardware encoder can make sense when a production needs multiple camera inputs, dedicated controls, or a separately managed encoding appliance; the platform does not require one for a file-based tour. Decide based on your inputs, operational needs, and a rehearsal at the intended settings—not on the Mac mini’s chip name alone.

Common problems and fixes

  • You cannot start a live event: Verify the channel, check for live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
  • The event preview stays blank: Confirm OBS is sending to the URL and key for the correct event, the encoder is started, and the video source is playing. Keep the key private; if in doubt, retrieve the event’s current ingest details in Live Control Room.
  • The stream reports poor health or drops frames: Run an upload speed test, check for other network traffic, and verify that available upload exceeds the stream’s total bitrate with the recommended 20% headroom. Lower resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected profile.
  • The picture stutters or the Mac struggles: Rehearse with the actual scene and output settings. Reduce the output frame rate or resolution, simplify the scene, or use an appropriate hardware encoder if the production requires more inputs. OBS warns that meeting its system requirements does not ensure performance for every workload.
  • Audio is missing, clipped, or out of sync: Check that the intended audio source is included in the program, confirm playback and levels in rehearsal, and inspect the preview before going live.
  • The tour looks soft, cropped, or stretched: Match the output canvas to the source aspect ratio and avoid upscaling as a substitute for source quality. Check room edges, signage, and text in the preview.
  • The replay is unavailable: Check the event’s archive and channel/watch page after ending the stream. For a stream under 12 hours, YouTube says it is automatically archived; maintain a local recording if you require a separate copy.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the finished tour should loop as a continuing YouTube stream rather than run as a scheduled one-off, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free first day at StreamNeo registration.
