You can send a continuous Punjabi kirtan stream to YouTube with FFmpeg by looping cleared audio or video, configuring an encoder signal that matches YouTube Live’s current ingest settings, and keeping the host, network, and monitoring in place around the clock. FFmpeg handles encoding and transmission; it does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted operation. Test the full setup before relying on it, and verify rights for every recording and performance you broadcast.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel and access to YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that live streaming is available on your channel before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
- A computer or server that can run FFmpeg continuously, with stable power and internet upload capacity. If the host sleeps, reboots, or loses its connection, the stream can stop unless you have configured and tested recovery.
- The exact audio or video files you intend to play, plus permission to broadcast the specific recording and performance.
- A private YouTube stream key and the current ingestion URL and protocol shown in Live Control Room.
YouTube’s Live API documentation describes a continuous-broadcast scenario, but that does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime, prescribe automatic FFmpeg reconnection, or establish a maximum stream duration. Treat 24/7 operation as a system you must operate and monitor, not a property FFmpeg supplies automatically.
Check rights for the kirtan recordings
Punjabi kirtan being devotional or based on traditional material does not by itself establish that a particular recording can be streamed. Rights may apply separately to a composition or arrangement, the sound recording, and the performance. Confirm that you have permission for the exact assets and the territories in which you plan to broadcast; do not assume another upload’s availability means you are cleared to rebroadcast it.
Choose YouTube’s ingest protocol and stream settings
Use the protocol and current ingest details displayed in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers.

For a straightforward FFmpeg setup, H.264 with AAC over RTMPS is a practical starting point when supported by the installed FFmpeg build and the YouTube ingest configuration. Match your settings to the source media and the available upload connection rather than choosing the highest resolution by default.

YouTube recommends 128 Kbps audio for stereo and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Its video bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult its current settings table for other combinations. Leave headroom on the upload connection for normal network variation, then validate actual stream health. A nominal connection speed alone does not establish that a bitrate will remain stable.

YouTube’s stated guidance is: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Read YouTube Help’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring the encoder, since its current table is the authority for ingest settings.
When HLS may make sense
HLS is a separate YouTube ingestion option, not an RTMP setting you can substitute without changing the encoder configuration. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. Its HLS requirements include HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations of one to four seconds. Consider HLS only when its supported codecs or HDR workflow suit your use case and your encoder supports the required protocol details; follow YouTube’s HLS setup guidance rather than applying RTMP assumptions.

Configure FFmpeg to loop and send your media
FFmpeg can encode and transmit media, but the exact command depends on your input files, installed build, chosen codecs, and YouTube’s current ingest details. The official documentation is broad and version-dependent; the official Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation identifies FFmpeg as an encoder example, not as a tested, complete 24/7 YouTube recipe. Build and test a command for your actual installation before relying on it.
- Prepare a reliable source. Decide whether the stream is audio-only with a still image or a video playlist. Check that every file plays correctly, has suitable audio levels, and is cleared for broadcast. For continuous playback, arrange a playlist or a verified looping input; do not assume a single file will repeat without configuring FFmpeg to do so.
- Get the ingest endpoint and key. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy the current server URL and stream key. Select RTMPS when the provided configuration supports it. Keep the key private: anyone with access may be able to send video to your stream.
- Set the output deliberately. Choose a supported codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, and audio format using YouTube’s current encoder guidance. For H.264, use the matching recommendation as a baseline; set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, no longer than four seconds. For stereo audio, use YouTube’s recommended 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz as a baseline.
- Start a private test. Send representative audio and movement, not just a static sample. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators, then listen and watch from a separate device. Confirm that the image, sound, and selected resolution are acceptable before making the broadcast public or scheduling a long run.
- Keep the process supervised. Run FFmpeg under a process manager or equivalent restart mechanism if your host supports it, and test what happens after a deliberate process stop, host reboot, and network interruption. A restart mechanism does not prove that YouTube will resume the intended broadcast automatically; verify the behavior in your own channel and keep a way to monitor the stream.
Test the complete 24/7 operating plan
A successful short test proves only that the tested media, host, network, and ingest configuration worked during that test. Before leaving a channel unattended, verify each failure point relevant to your setup:

- Source continuity: confirm playlist order, loop behavior, file availability, and what happens if an input is missing or unreadable.
- Host continuity: disable sleep where appropriate, check power recovery after an outage, and confirm the FFmpeg process starts after restart.
- Network continuity: test sustained upload at the selected bitrate and determine how you will detect an outage or degraded stream.
- YouTube recovery: simulate an FFmpeg stop or brief disconnection and observe whether the encoder reconnects and whether the broadcast remains usable. Do not assume automatic reconnection from the fact that FFmpeg is running.
- Credential handling: restrict access to the stream key, avoid posting it in public logs or scripts, and know how to replace it if exposed.
- Human monitoring: decide who will notice a stopped or unhealthy stream and how they will respond, including outside normal hours.
Troubleshoot common failures
