You can stream a prerecorded video from Windows 11 by playing it in an encoder, sending the encoder’s output to a YouTube Live event, and starting the event in YouTube Studio. You need a verified channel with live streaming enabled, a video file, and encoder software that supports a local video source and YouTube output. For a scheduled event, start the encoder first, check YouTube’s preview, then click Go live in Live Control Room.

Before you start

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified, and it must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check eligibility before event day in YouTube’s live streaming tips.
  • Have the prerecorded video file ready on your Windows 11 computer. Check that it plays with the intended picture and sound.
  • Install or open an encoder that can play a local video file and send a live output to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS and other software and hardware encoders; OBS is one option, not a requirement. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  • Use an upload connection that can sustain your chosen stream quality. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time and monitoring the stream once it is live.

YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled stream. These are preparation recommendations, not technical prerequisites. YouTube live streaming tips and Streaming tips.

Create or schedule the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
  2. For a new stream, use the Stream tab. To set up an event in advance, choose Manage and schedule a stream.
  3. Set the title, description, audience and privacy deliberately. Privacy defaults vary by age: YouTube says users aged 13–17 default to private, while users 18 and older default to public; you can change the setting.
  4. If you schedule the event, use its watch page to share the stream link and let viewers set reminders.

See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Live Control Room workflow.

Connect the encoder to YouTube

  1. Open the encoder and select its YouTube destination preset if one is available. Otherwise, in YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s server and key fields.
  2. Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not expose one in a screenshot or share it with someone who should not be able to send video to your channel. See Manage live stream settings.
  3. Choose RTMPS if your encoder offers it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Confirm the encoder indicates that it is connected before proceeding.

YouTube allows stream keys to be reused or reset in stream settings. If a key is exposed, the channel owner or manager can reset it. Manage live stream settings.

Add and check the prerecorded video

  1. In the encoder, add the video file as the program’s video source. The exact menu name and file-source controls depend on the application.
  2. Make sure the file’s audio is routed to the encoder’s stream audio. A picture in the encoder preview does not by itself confirm that the audience will hear sound.
  3. Play the file and inspect the encoder preview. Check that picture and audio are both present and that the intended section is playing.
  4. If you need the file to repeat, configure looping in the encoder if it supports it, and verify the behavior in a test. Looping controls differ by app; do not assume a file will restart automatically.

The encoder sends the combined program to YouTube using the URL and key from the previous section. YouTube’s instructions cover the connection, while file selection and looping are specific to the encoder you choose. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Choose stream settings that your connection can sustain

Set the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate to suit both the source video and your available upload bandwidth. YouTube publishes recommended bitrate ranges for different resolutions and frame rates; use its current table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. A higher-quality setting is not useful if the connection cannot sustain it without interruptions. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  • Use RTMPS for a typical prerecorded-file stream when your encoder supports it.
  • Run a private or unlisted test with representative picture motion and audio. Check for dropped frames, buffering, sound level and synchronization before the public event.
  • HLS is a different ingest option. It can suit certain requirements, such as HDR or codecs outside RTMP support, but YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. Use it only when your encoder or media needs call for it. See Set up an HLS stream.
  • HDR is a specialized workflow, not a setting to add casually to a standard SDR stream. YouTube’s instructions for OBS describe an RTMP HDR workflow requiring OBS 30.1 or later and specific HDR sources and encoding settings. See Stream HDR video on YouTube.

Preview, start and monitor the stream

  1. For a scheduled event, start playback or transmission in the encoder. Wait for the incoming signal and preview to appear in Live Control Room.
  2. Check the YouTube preview, event accessibility, audio and video. When the program is ready, select Go live in Live Control Room.
  3. Keep Live Control Room and the encoder visible while streaming. Monitor stream health and confirm the prerecorded video continues playing with sound.

For a public event, YouTube recommends testing before the actual stream and checking the preview; its tips also advise monitoring audio and video throughout. YouTube live streaming tips and Streaming tips.

End the event and find its archive

  1. End the event in Live Control Room.
  2. Stop the encoder from sending its output.
  3. For streams under 12 hours, YouTube says the stream is automatically archived. Look for it in YouTube Studio’s Live tab. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot common problems

YouTube does not receive the encoder signal

Confirm that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the intended event, then check that it is actually outputting. If you use a preset, make sure the correct YouTube event is selected. Treat a stream key like a password; reset it in YouTube stream settings if it may have been exposed.

The video appears, but there is no sound

Check that the file’s audio is enabled and routed to the encoder’s stream output, not just audible locally on the PC. Verify the result in the encoder preview and YouTube’s incoming preview before going live.

The stream buffers or drops frames

The chosen output settings may exceed what the upload connection can reliably sustain. Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate, reduce quality if needed, and test again on the connection you will use for the event.

The event page is not public

Review the event’s privacy setting in YouTube Studio. Do not assume the default is public: YouTube says accounts for users aged 13–17 default to private, while those for users 18 and older default to public, and the setting can be changed.

The prerecorded video stops instead of repeating

Looping behavior is encoder-specific. Look for a repeat or loop control for the local file, enable it if available, and test beyond the end of the file before relying on it for a long event.
