You can broadcast a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live stream from a Raspberry Pi 4 by sending the file through encoder software to YouTube’s ingest server. Create an encoder event in YouTube Studio, configure the Pi to play the file in real time and send it over RTMPS, check the incoming preview, then start the event in Live Control Room. The Pi 4 lists H.264 encoding up to 1080p30, but actual results depend on the video, software and network, so test your exact setup before relying on it live.

What you need before you start

  • A Raspberry Pi 4 with Raspberry Pi OS or another compatible operating system, a power supply and storage containing the video file. The Pi 4 has a microSD slot, Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi, so a separate network adapter is not inherently required. Raspberry Pi 4 specifications
  • A YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its general eligibility guidance also states a minimum age of 16. Check the current account status in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • An encoder application that can play your file in real time and send a compatible feed to YouTube. The available documentation does not certify a particular Pi 4 application, installation procedure or command, so confirm compatibility on your own operating system and board.
  • A reliable upload connection. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations describe the stream sent to YouTube, not the speed your internet plan guarantees. Leave capacity for normal network use and verify the actual stream health during a test.

Create a YouTube encoder event and get its connection details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using an encoder. Set the title, privacy and schedule for the event; YouTube supports public, private and unlisted settings.
  2. Open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Use the details for the correct event. Treat the key as a password: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings and update the encoder.
  3. Choose RTMPS if your encoder offers it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure version of RTMP. Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, chat and source-code repositories.

See YouTube’s stream settings instructions for where the stream URL and key appear, and its encoder workflow for the preview and start sequence.

Prepare the video for the Pi 4

Check the file before configuring the stream

Place the video on the Pi’s microSD card or connected storage. Confirm that the encoder can read its container and decode its video and audio formats. Pi 4 specifications list H.264 encoding up to 1080p30, and H.264 1080p60 and H.265 4Kp60 decoding; those are hardware capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular application will decode, encode and stream every file smoothly at once.

Raspberry Pi’s configuration documentation notes that Pi 4 hardware MPEG-2 and VC-1 decoding is disabled, so files using those codecs may require software decoding. If playback stutters or uses too much of the available processing capacity, convert the source on another computer to a format your encoder handles reliably, then test the converted file on the Pi. Choose a realistic starting resolution and frame rate

For a Pi 4, start with H.264 at 720p30 or 1080p30. The board’s listed H.264 encoding capability supports 1080p30, but that specification does not establish how a complete file-playback and live-encoding workload will perform. If the source is lower resolution, upscaling it does not add detail. If the source is 1080p30, that is a sensible first test setting. Use 1080p60 only if your chosen encoder and actual workload can sustain it; the Pi 4’s listed 1080p60 capability is for H.264 decoding, not encoding.

Configure the encoder for YouTube

Use compatible video, audio and timing settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. For a practical Pi 4 starting point, choose H.264 video and AAC audio if the encoder and source support them. Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Exact controls and labels depend on the encoder application.

Set bitrate to match the stream and connection

YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include these examples. They are YouTube settings guidance, not measured Pi 4 performance figures. Use the row matching your chosen resolution and frame rate, and confirm the upload connection can sustain the selected rate.

Output Minimum H.264 bitrate Recommended H.264 bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for the appropriate row and any other output formats. Do not assume the Pi can sustain a particular bitrate just because YouTube lists it: the board, encoder and connection all need to handle the complete stream.

Configure file playback as a live feed

Set the encoder to read the prerecorded file at normal playback speed and send its audio and video to the event’s YouTube ingest URL using the copied stream key. For a continuous program, configure a playlist or repeat option only if your encoder supports it and test how it handles the end of a file. A prerecorded file sent this way becomes the content of a live event; it does not make the Pi’s camera live.

There is no verified Raspberry Pi-specific FFmpeg command or certified Pi software build established here. Rather than copy a command that may not match your OS, file, encoder version or hardware acceleration, use the encoder’s documented file-input and RTMPS settings, then validate the resulting feed in YouTube’s preview.

Preview, go live and end the broadcast

  1. Start the encoder on the Pi. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in the event’s Live Control Room preview.
  2. Check moving video and audio in the preview. Test a representative section with movement, speech or music, and inspect stream health before you make the event public.
  3. When the preview and health indicators are satisfactory, start the event in Live Control Room. Monitor video, audio and stream health while it is live.
  4. When the broadcast is finished, end the event using Live Control Room’s controls and stop the encoder on the Pi. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that as a promise for longer streams. YouTube encoder workflow and YouTube streaming tips

Troubleshoot common problems

  • No incoming preview: Check that the encoder is running, the event’s correct stream URL and key are entered, and the Pi can reach the internet. Confirm RTMP or RTMPS is configured as expected and that you are viewing the matching event in Live Control Room. Reset and replace the key if you suspect it was exposed.
  • Video stutters or drops frames: Test the file locally on the Pi, check whether its codec requires software decoding, and try a lower resolution or frame rate. A full test with the actual file is essential; the published hardware specifications do not guarantee a smooth combined workload.
  • Stream health warns about bitrate or connection: Confirm the encoder uses CBR and the bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate. Check whether the available upload capacity can sustain that rate; if not, lower the output setting and test again.
  • Audio is missing or out of sync: Verify that the selected audio track is enabled and encoded in a format YouTube supports, such as AAC or MP3. Listen to the incoming preview before starting the event.
  • Playback stops at the end of the file: Check the encoder’s file end behavior. Enable repeat or use a playlist if the application supports it, and test the transition between clips before scheduling a long event.

Respect copyright and YouTube’s live-stream rules

Having a video file does not by itself give you permission to rebroadcast its audio or images. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and community rules before scheduling an event. A stream can be interrupted or restricted if it violates platform rules. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover operational checks; consult YouTube’s current policy pages for the rules applicable to your channel and content.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving the Pi powered and connected at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It is for prerecorded video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasts.
