You can stream a prerecorded video to YouTube without keeping a home computer on: run an encoder on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) virtual machine, connect it to your YouTube event with the event’s RTMPS URL and stream key, then monitor the preview and stream health. The steps below cover the OCI network path, YouTube setup, encoder settings, testing, and common failures. No VM or live stream has been tested for this guide, so verify the exact setup with a test event before relying on it.

What you need before starting

  • An OCI tenancy and a VM that can read your video and sustain the chosen encode profile.
  • Outbound internet connectivity from the VM. For a public-subnet setup, this normally includes a public IP, an internet gateway, and a route rule; a private VM needs a configured egress path such as a NAT gateway.
  • A YouTube channel with access to create or schedule a live event and retrieve its stream URL and key.
  • A prerecorded video with compatible video and audio tracks, plus enough storage on the VM or another accessible location.

This workflow sends an outbound connection from the encoder to YouTube. You do not need to open inbound ports for YouTube ingest. OCI security lists and network security groups can affect connectivity; the default security list permits stateful egress, but custom rules may differ. See OCI security lists and OCI networking quickstart for the relevant network concepts and setup.

Check the OCI region, VM, and network

Confirm whether Always Free compute applies

If you intend to use OCI Always Free compute, Oracle says Always Free instances must be created in the tenancy’s home region. Confirm that the home region is Mumbai and check the console for eligible shapes, quota, and current host capacity before planning around a specific VM. Oracle notes that temporary capacity shortages can prevent provisioning. Shape availability alone does not establish that a VM can encode your file at the quality you want. See Oracle Cloud Free Tier for current terms.

Verify the egress route

For a public-subnet VM, check that the subnet’s route table has a route through an internet gateway, the VM has a public IP, and the applicable security list or network security group permits outbound traffic. A private VM needs another working egress arrangement, such as a NAT gateway. The exact configuration depends on the VCN and security rules already in place.

Create the YouTube live event and get its ingest details

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live event you intend to use.
  2. In the event’s stream settings, retrieve the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, public logs, source control, or shared shell history.
  3. Select the RTMPS server URL if the interface initially shows an RTMP URL. Use the exact endpoint supplied by YouTube rather than guessing one.
  4. Keep the event available in Live Control Room so you can check the preview and stream health after the encoder connects.

RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube documents RTMPS on port 443. An encoder that creates its own TLS connection must use the destination hostname for SNI; for ordinary encoder use, the safest course is to provide the exact RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. See YouTube RTMPS ingestion guidance and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Configure an encoder on the VM

Install or use a software encoder on the OCI VM that can read the video and send it to YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint. Configure the encoder with the event’s server URL and stream key. YouTube identifies encoder software as a supported way to stream, but the appropriate command and settings depend on the source file’s codecs, audio tracks, duration, operating system, and desired output. No single FFmpeg command or package setup is established here, so do not assume an untested command will work with your media.

Choose a compatible output profile

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for your target resolution and frame rate. Its guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s resolution-specific table rather than guessing: YouTube live encoder settings.

The VM must be able to decode the source, encode the chosen output profile if transcoding is needed, and sustain the outbound bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping total bitrate within available upload bandwidth with 20% headroom. That is YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that a particular OCI shape or route will sustain your stream. See YouTube streaming tips and encoder settings.

Test the stream, then operate the event

  1. Start with an unlisted or private test event if that suits your audience and channel setup.
  2. Start the encoder and wait for the event preview in Live Control Room.
  3. Check that the preview has moving video and audible sound, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health information before making the event public.
  4. Keep Live Control Room open while the stream runs. Confirm that the event is available through the intended channel and watch page.
  5. For a file-based broadcast, check what the encoder does at end-of-file and ensure the event ends as intended.

YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a stream lasting 12 hours or longer will be archived. If preservation matters, keep a separate copy in local or object storage and verify the completed event in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Troubleshoot common OCI-to-YouTube failures

The encoder times out or cannot connect

  • Check that you copied the event’s RTMPS URL exactly and that the encoder is using RTMPS on port 443.
  • Verify that the VM has a working route to the public internet and that its outbound security rules allow the connection.
  • If the VM is private, verify its NAT or other egress path rather than assuming a subnet has internet access.

The encoder reports an SSL or certificate error

  • Confirm the endpoint uses the RTMPS URL YouTube supplied and port 443.
  • Check that the encoder supports TLS correctly. If a custom implementation opens the TLS connection itself, it must send SNI with the destination hostname.

YouTube shows no preview or an unhealthy stream

  • Check that the URL and stream key belong to the same event and that the key has not been mistyped or exposed.
  • Confirm that the output uses a compatible video and audio codec, the recommended keyframe interval, and a bitrate the VM’s outbound connection can sustain.
  • If the VM or network cannot maintain the selected profile, reduce resolution or bitrate and test again. Use the encoder and YouTube diagnostics to identify the specific cause rather than assuming the region or shape alone is responsible.

OCI will not provision the VM

  • Check the tenancy’s home region, shape eligibility, quotas, and current capacity in the OCI console.
  • If relying on Always Free compute, confirm the requested region is the tenancy’s home region; temporary host-capacity shortages can still prevent creation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos live without maintaining an OCI VM and encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
