To stream a prerecorded video to YouTube from an Indian VPS, upload the file to the server, then use FFmpeg to send it in real time to YouTube’s live ingest server with the stream key from YouTube Studio. Choose encoder settings from YouTube’s current recommendations, confirm the VPS can sustain the required upload rate, and check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the stream.

Before you start

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
  • You need a live event or stream in YouTube Studio, its server URL and stream key, an uploaded media file, and an FFmpeg installation on the VPS.
  • Check that the VPS has enough disk space for the file, enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream, and sufficient CPU if you need to re-encode. A prerecorded source still consumes CPU when transcoded.

Keep the stream key secret: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. Do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, command history, or logs. YouTube explains stream-key management in its live stream settings guide.

Choose the VPS and stream quality

There is no single VPS size that is reliably “low cost” for every stream. Workload depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, duration, and whether FFmpeg can pass through compatible video or must encode it. Compare plans available in an Indian region using the actual requirements below; no specific provider, current plan, or price is established here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Sustained outbound bandwidth: compare the usable, sustained rate—not just the advertised port speed—with the combined video and audio bitrate. YouTube recommends approximately 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate.
  • Transfer allowance: calculate the traffic for the intended streaming hours and check quotas, fair-use terms, and any egress charges.
  • CPU: software encoding can be demanding. Test the chosen VPS at the intended resolution and frame rate rather than assuming a low-cost instance can encode them continuously.
  • Storage: allow space for the media file and any other files the workflow needs.
  • Reliability and terms: check network reliability and whether continuous outbound streaming is permitted.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder settings guide.

720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain them. The table is not exhaustive; use YouTube’s current settings table for your target resolution, frame rate, and codec. Include audio bitrate when estimating total outbound use, then leave the recommended headroom.

Set up the YouTube event and upload the file

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select the event you intend to broadcast.
  2. Confirm that the channel meets YouTube’s live-stream eligibility requirements. Copy the current server URL and stream key from the event’s stream settings.
  3. Transfer the prerecorded file to the VPS and check that it has the expected video and audio. Confirm the available disk space.
  4. Protect the stream key. Avoid placing it in a command that will be saved to shell history or printed in logs; use a private script or another method appropriate to your server’s access controls.

Send the prerecorded video with FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s format documentation demonstrates real-time input, H.264/AAC encoding, FLV output, RTMP delivery, and options for attempting recovery after a temporary network failure. The example below shows the shape of the command; replace the placeholders with your file and the current YouTube ingest URL and key. Do not paste a real key into a public page or shared terminal transcript.

ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

This illustrative command is configured for 720p/30 output only if the input is scaled to that resolution; it does not itself resize the video. The bitrate shown is YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps, while the audio bitrate is an example setting, not a figure specified by the cited YouTube table. Adapt the video size, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to the source, YouTube’s current guidance, and the VPS capacity. The -re option reads the file at its native real-time pace rather than sending it as fast as possible.

If the source is already compatible and you do not need to change its encoding, passing video and audio through can reduce CPU use; verify compatibility and stream health rather than assuming that every file can be passed through unchanged. Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (2GB)
  • Broadcom BCM2711, Quad core Cortex-A72 (ARM v8) 64-bit SoC @ 1.5GHz
  • 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM (depending on model)
  • 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz IEEE 802.11ac wireless, Bluetooth 5.0, BLE Gigabit Ethernet
  • 2 USB 3.0 ports; 2 USB 2.0 ports.
  • Raspberry Pi standard 40 pin GPIO header (fully backwards compatible with previous boards)

Start, check, and end the broadcast

  1. Start FFmpeg early enough to troubleshoot. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check that the feed arrives and inspect the preview before treating the event as live.
  2. Test with representative motion and sound. Monitor stream health, CPU load, outbound network use, dropped frames, and audio and video throughout.
  3. If the preview or health indicators show a problem, stop and correct the encoder or VPS issue before proceeding. YouTube notes that interruptions can break a stream; its streaming tips recommend testing and leaving upload headroom.
  4. When finished, end the event in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube does not receive a feed: verify the event’s current server URL and stream key, check that the key has not been reset, and confirm the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint. Re-enter a reset key in the encoder.
  • Video buffers or stream health is poor: compare actual sustained upload capacity with the combined stream bitrate plus roughly 20% headroom. Reduce output bitrate or quality if the connection cannot sustain it.
  • FFmpeg overloads the VPS: software encoding may exceed available CPU. Try compatible pass-through media or a lower encoding workload, then test the VPS again under sustained streaming conditions.
  • Video arrives without the expected sound or picture: inspect the source file’s audio and video streams, then confirm the chosen codecs and output settings match the source and YouTube’s current requirements.
  • The stream stops after a network interruption: check VPS connectivity and FFmpeg’s recovery behavior. Recovery attempts cannot guarantee uninterrupted delivery if the network or server remains unavailable.
