You can use a Chromebook to control a separate Mac, Windows, or Linux computer that runs an encoder and sends a prerecorded video to YouTube Live. The Chromebook is the remote control, not the streaming computer: the host must stay online, and its encoder sends the video using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
What you need before you start
- A Chromebook with internet access and permission to use Chrome Remote Desktop. Work or school administrators and network settings may restrict remote access.
- A separate Mac, Windows, or Linux computer that can stay powered on and connected to the internet throughout the stream.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming and a YouTube-compatible encoder installed on the host computer.
- The prerecorded video and any audio you have the right to stream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility and enable streaming ahead of your event. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the live-stream workflow.
Set up and control the host computer
- Configure the host. On the Mac, Windows, or Linux computer that will stream, open Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop setup instructions, choose remote access, and configure the host as directed.
- Connect from the Chromebook. Open Chrome Remote Desktop on the web, select the host when it is online, and enter its PIN. The host must be reachable over the internet. Google says, “For your security, all remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted.” Some managed accounts or restrictive work and school networks may block the connection.
- Keep the host available. Remote desktop lets you operate the other computer; it does not move the encoder onto ChromeOS. The host must remain on, connected, and able to send data for the stream to continue.
Prepare the prerecorded video in an encoder
On the remote host, use a YouTube-compatible encoder and prepare the video there. YouTube supports encoder software on a computer as well as standalone hardware, but the setup information here does not establish a particular desktop app’s current method for feeding it a local video file. Follow the encoder’s own current documentation for selecting and playing a prerecorded file; do not assume a specific media-source setting will work in every version.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Check the encoder’s current documentation for its RTMPS options and confirm the host’s upload connection can sustain the quality you choose. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum bitrate and 14 Mbps as recommended; its guidance varies by resolution and frame rate. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for other formats.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the corresponding fields in the host encoder. Treat the key like a password: keep it private, and reset it if you think someone else has obtained it. YouTube’s encoder guide describes connecting an encoder to Live Control Room.
- Start the encoder on the host. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then select Go live when you are ready.
- Confirm that the preview has picture and sound, and monitor stream health during the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and motion before the event. Its live-streaming tips cover testing, preview, and stream-health checks.
- At the end, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choose between a remote host and a dedicated encoder
| Approach | What it does | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Existing computer plus remote desktop | The Chromebook controls a Mac, Windows, or Linux host; the host encoder sends the stream. | Useful if you already have a suitable computer that can stay online. The encoder and video playback still need to be configured on that host. |
| AJA HELO Plus | YouTube’s encoder directory describes it as a standalone H.264 encoder. Its optional AJA PlayToStream functionality allows prerecorded media to be scheduled and streamed directly to YouTube Live without a computer. | A separate hardware route rather than a requirement for the remote-host method. The cited YouTube information does not establish its price or current retail availability. See YouTube’s encoder directory. |
Troubleshoot common problems
- The host does not appear or the Chromebook cannot connect: Confirm that the host is on and connected to the internet, then check whether an administrator or work or school network blocks remote access.
- The stream does not connect: Check that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the intended Live Control Room stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- The preview is missing or unhealthy: Confirm the encoder is sending, verify the selected output settings against the host’s upload capacity, and test again with representative sound and motion. Use YouTube’s stream-health feedback before going live.
- The Chromebook disconnects: The control session is separate from the stream itself, but you should verify on the host and in Live Control Room that the encoder remains active. The host—not the Chromebook—must keep sending the stream.
- You cannot enable live streaming in time: Check channel verification and restrictions early. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded videos without keeping a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
