You can send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an Android phone only if your encoder app supports playing and looping a local file and can keep running on your device. YouTube’s standard mobile-live workflow is not documented as a way to select and loop a saved video. For a phone-based setup, use an encoder app with those confirmed features, connect it to a YouTube stream URL and key, then test the full setup on the handset before relying on it. A phone is a less dependable choice for unattended 24/7 streaming because it must remain powered, connected, and able to run the app continuously.

Choose the right way to stream a saved video

YouTube documents two relevant routes: mobile live streaming through the YouTube app, and encoder streaming using a stream URL and key. The mobile route is intended for mobile live broadcasts; YouTube does not document its normal Create → Live flow as a local-video player or looping tool. For prerecorded playback from a phone, you need a separate encoder app that explicitly supports local-file playback, looping, and RTMP or RTMPS output.

Route Prerecorded file and loop What to expect
YouTube app mobile live Local-file looping is not documented Use it for the mobile-live workflow YouTube describes, not as a guaranteed way to broadcast a gallery video.
Android encoder app Depends on the specific app Check that its current listing or help confirms local playback, looping, RTMP(S) output, and the background behavior you need. YouTube lists Larix Broadcaster among encoder options, but that mention does not establish file-looping or unattended 24/7 support.
Cloud streaming Depends on the service The stream can run without using the phone as the always-on playback computer. StreamNeo is one YouTube-only option described below.

Do not assume an app can stream continuously just because it can send a live feed. The app, Android version, handset, power settings, and network all affect whether the phone can keep the loop running. Test the actual combination you plan to use.

Check YouTube eligibility before setting up

YouTube’s current mobile-live Help page lists these requirements for going live from the YouTube mobile app. They are platform requirements, not confirmation that a third-party encoder supports your phone or its file-looping features.

Set up a phone encoder and YouTube stream

1. Choose and test a suitable encoder app

Before installing or paying for an app, check its current documentation or listing for all of the following:

2. Create a YouTube live event and copy its connection details

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. In the encoder app, enter them in its server or stream settings. Follow the app’s own field labels; they can differ.
  3. Keep the key private. Treat it like a credential: do not expose it in screenshots or share it with an untrusted service. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live stream settings and update the encoder.
  4. Where the app supports it, choose RTMPS. YouTube recommends secure ingest. RTMPS is RTMP tunneled through SSL/TLS; Google’s technical guidance specifies YouTube’s valid ingestion URL, port 443, and correct TLS hostname/SNI handling. Most users should enter the URL supplied by YouTube rather than constructing a low-level connection themselves. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance.

3. Start the encoder, preview, and go live

  1. Select the local video in the encoder, enable looping, and set the stream to use the YouTube URL and key.
  2. Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
  3. Check that the video is framed correctly, audio is audible and synchronized, and the loop returns to the beginning as expected.
  4. Set the title, visibility, and audience details in YouTube. For a scheduled stream, follow the prompts in Live Control Room to start the event when the preview is ready.
  5. Watch YouTube’s stream health during the test. YouTube advises testing and monitoring rather than assuming a successful connection will remain healthy.

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain

Choose settings that the phone and your sustained upload connection can maintain, not merely settings that work during a brief speed test. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include these starting points:

Video setting YouTube-recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not measurements of Indian mobile networks. Actual upload capacity varies with carrier, location, signal, plan, and network congestion. Start with a setting your connection sustains during a longer test, then check YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for other resolutions and settings.

Test the phone before attempting a long broadcast

Run a test on the exact phone, app, video, and network you intend to use. YouTube’s general advice is to test, preview, and monitor; the following handset-specific behaviors must be confirmed on your device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Loop: Let the file reach its end and verify playback starts again without intervention.
  • Screen and power: Test the intended screen-off and power settings. Check that Android does not pause or close the encoder in the background.
  • Heat and sustained operation: Monitor the handset during an extended test for overheating, app stoppage, or other interruptions.
  • Network recovery: Briefly interrupt the connection if safe to do so, then check whether the app reconnects and whether YouTube receives the feed again. Do not assume recovery is automatic unless you have verified it.
  • Audio and picture: Check synchronization, volume, framing, and stability both before and after a loop.
  • Data use: Streaming consumes ongoing upload data. Your carrier’s plan, local network conditions, and bitrate determine the actual cost; there is no single India-wide figure established here.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive warning

A continuous public broadcast and a complete 24-hour video archive are not the same thing. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If preserving the recording matters, plan separate sessions under 12 hours and keep a local recording backup where feasible. Ending a stream before the threshold is not a guarantee that every archive will be intact. Read YouTube’s live archive guidance.

Confirm you have the rights to the video and audio

Use material you created or have permission to broadcast in the intended way. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it when it detects a match. If you have a licence for third-party material, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; YouTube says licensed content can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube receives no preview Wrong stream URL or key, encoder not started, or an ingest connection problem Recheck the URL and key in YouTube and the app, confirm the encoder is sending, and try YouTube’s supplied RTMPS connection details if supported. Reset an exposed key and update the app.
The stream stops when the screen turns off The app or Android background/power behavior stops the encoder Check the app’s background guidance and the phone’s power settings, then test again with the exact screen-off configuration. This behavior is not guaranteed by YouTube’s encoder documentation.
The video plays once and stops Looping is unsupported, disabled, or configured incorrectly Confirm the app explicitly supports local-file looping and that the loop control is enabled. Test to the file’s end before scheduling a broadcast.
Video or audio becomes unstable Upload capacity is inconsistent or the chosen bitrate is too high for sustained conditions Lower the bitrate or resolution, test for longer, and monitor stream health. YouTube’s recommended bitrates are starting points, not a guarantee about your carrier connection.
The app does not reconnect after a drop Automatic recovery may be absent or may require a manual restart Check the app’s documented behavior and test a brief interruption. If unattended continuity is essential, a phone-only setup may not meet the requirement.
The live stream is interrupted for a copyright match YouTube detected third-party content, including material that may be licensed but is not allowlisted Use content cleared for the stream, or ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel. Review YouTube’s copyright instructions.
A long broadcast has no complete archive The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour capture warning For an archive, use separate shorter sessions and keep a local backup if practical; a 24-hour continuous stream is not a guaranteed complete VOD.
