You can stream prerecorded video through a scheduled YouTube live event by creating the event in YouTube Studio, sending the event’s stream URL and key from an encoder or streaming service, then clicking Go live after YouTube shows the incoming preview. Scheduling creates a shareable upcoming page and lets viewers opt into reminders—but it does not establish that one event can run indefinitely. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not confirm unlimited runtime for a single event.

What “continuous” means for a scheduled YouTube event

A scheduled event is a way to announce and launch a stream at a planned time. It is not, by itself, a continuous-playback service: an encoder or streaming service must keep sending the prerecorded program, and the scheduled-event workflow still requires you to start the event in Live Control Room after the incoming preview appears.

YouTube’s help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived, or that one scheduled event can remain live indefinitely. If your requirement is uninterrupted 24/7 playback, do not treat a scheduled event as proof of unlimited single-event duration. Check YouTube’s current requirements and your chosen provider’s limits before planning a long run.

Create and launch the scheduled event

  1. Schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, open Manage, then choose Schedule stream. Create a new event or reuse settings. Scheduling provides an upcoming watch page that you can share, and viewers can opt into reminders. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Get the event’s connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into your encoder or streaming service. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it; reset it if it may have been exposed. Details are in YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
  3. Load the prerecorded program. Configure the encoder or service to send the video file, or a selected sequence of media, as the outgoing video and audio feed. The encoder workflow sends an incoming feed to YouTube; the playback and looping behavior is controlled by the encoder or service.
  4. Start early and check the feed. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Confirm that the preview appears and that video, sound, watch-page access, and any locally used archive recording behave as expected. Monitor stream health during the event. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
  5. Start the event in Live Control Room. Once the encoder’s incoming preview appears, click Go live. Starting the encoder alone is not the complete launch flow for a scheduled event.
  6. End it deliberately. When finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder. Do not assume that stopping one component will cleanly close both the event and the outgoing feed.

Choose encoder settings that fit the source and connection

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the supported bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Settings should match the encoder’s capabilities and the upload connection; select a rate the connection can sustain, then test using sound and motion similar to the actual program. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, so your outgoing settings do not dictate one identical playback format for every viewer.

  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as specified in YouTube’s current guidance.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: The current guidance lists AAC or MP3.

There is no universal bitrate or resolution that suits every source and connection. Verify the applicable table on YouTube’s settings page and test before the scheduled start rather than choosing a high setting the upload connection cannot sustain.

Set audience and playback options

Latency

Lower latency can increase playback buffering. If a prerecorded program does not need real-time interaction with viewers, low latency may matter less than steady playback; weigh that trade-off against how quickly viewers need to see the stream.

Choose how to keep prerecorded playback running

Run an encoder locally

A local encoder gives you direct control and may let you use equipment you already have. It also means the computer, encoder, power, and network connection must remain available for the stream. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started; professional-grade hardware encoders are an option for higher-production events, not a default purchase for simply replaying a prepared video.

Use a cloud service for continuous playback

YouTube’s official encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. The listing identifies a possible cloud route; it is not an independent performance review and does not establish Gyre’s current pricing, features, or plan and runtime limits. Check the provider’s current terms before committing to a long-running event. See the YouTube encoder directory.

Troubleshoot common launch problems

  • No incoming preview: Check that the encoder uses the stream URL and key belonging to this scheduled event, and that it has started sending the program. Keep the key private and reset it if compromised.
  • Preview appears, but the event is not live: For a scheduled event, click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview arrives.
  • Video stutters or buffers: Check stream health and whether the upload connection can sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Test with representative sound and motion, and adjust settings using YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
  • Viewers cannot rewind or playback buffers more than expected: Review the DVR and latency choices. DVR affects pausing and rewinding; lower latency can increase buffering.
  • The run exceeds 12 hours: YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. The cited guidance does not establish archive behavior or unlimited single-event runtime beyond that threshold; confirm current platform and service limits before depending on a longer run.

Protect the channel and the program

Using a scheduled event or prerecorded video does not grant rights to the material. Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other included material, and follow YouTube’s applicable copyright and Community Guidelines. Keep the stream key private because anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the event.

For a final preflight, check the scheduled watch page and reminder setup, confirm the correct event key and URL, test audio and moving video, verify the incoming preview, and ensure the encoder and connection can remain available for the intended duration.
