To stream a prerecorded video on YouTube Live in 4K at 60 frames per second, create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then send a 3840 × 2160, 60 fps feed from compatible streaming software, hardware, or a cloud service. YouTube supports 4K/60 ingest, but the encoder and connection must sustain the selected codec and bitrate. For a do-it-yourself setup, follow the steps below; for continuous playback without leaving a computer running, see StreamNeo.

What you need for a 4K/60 YouTube Live stream

  • A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • An encoder that can play the video file and output 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps using a codec YouTube accepts: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS.
  • A reliable upload connection capable of sustaining the chosen video bitrate, with additional capacity for normal network variation.
  • A prerecorded video you have the rights to stream, plus a local copy to use as your archive backup.

YouTube’s official encoder settings list 4K/2160p at up to 60 fps. Its bitrate figures are encoder settings, not guarantees that a particular computer or connection can maintain the feed. YouTube’s encoder settings guide recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds.

Set the encoder bitrate and video settings

For 4K/60, YouTube publishes different minimum and recommended bitrates depending on the ingest codec:

Ingest codec YouTube minimum setting YouTube recommended setting
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published settings, not measured connection requirements or a promise of uninterrupted delivery. Use a speed test to check upload throughput, and leave headroom above your video bitrate because network capacity can fluctuate. Choose a codec your encoder supports and test it with the same file, audio, and motion you expect to stream.

  • Keyframes: every two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: RTMPS where your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends it as a secure extension of RTMP.
  • Baseline SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); AV1 is not supported for HDR.

YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate. If you use a custom stream key, it can be configured for manual resolution selection. At 4K/2160p, YouTube does not offer its low-latency option: streams are set to normal latency.

How to send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live

  1. Confirm channel readiness. Verify the channel and check that it has no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. If this is the first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation. See YouTube’s live streaming requirements.
  2. Choose an encoder. Use software that can play a local video into a live output, or a compatible hardware encoder. Check the specific product for 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, supported codec, bitrate controls, and RTMPS support; do not assume every encoder handles all of these. YouTube’s encoder guide also lists Gyre as a cloud service for continuous prerecorded streaming and describes 4K at 30/60 fps. That is a vendor capability listing, not independent testing; check its current specifications and terms.
  3. Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create a stream or select a scheduled one in Live Control Room. YouTube provides the stream URL and stream key there. The key authorizes your encoder to send video to the event, so keep it private and do not show it in a recording or screenshot.
  4. Configure the encoder’s output. Set the resolution to 3840 × 2160, frame rate to 60 fps, rate control to CBR, and keyframe interval to two seconds. Select an available ingest codec and use the corresponding YouTube bitrate setting above. Choose RTMPS if supported, then enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room.
  5. Load and check the prerecorded video. Select the file or playlist in the encoder and confirm that its audio and video play correctly. If the source itself is not 4K/60, choosing 4K/60 output does not create detail or motion that was not in the original.
  6. Run a rehearsal. Start the encoder early enough to inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages. Test representative movement and audio, and check the watch page before the real event. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s guide to live streaming.
  7. Start the scheduled event. When the preview and health indicators are satisfactory, start the event in Live Control Room if required. Keep the encoder running and monitor the connection while it sends the prerecorded material.
  8. Keep a local archive. YouTube automatically archives 1440p and 2160p streams, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Save a local recording as a backup, particularly for a long or continuous broadcast. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Copyright and reused-content checks

Having a video file does not necessarily give you permission to broadcast everything in it. Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the footage, music, images, and other material, including any licenses needed for live use. YouTube may detect copyrighted material during a live stream. A prerecorded format does not exempt a channel from YouTube’s copyright or monetization policies; reused content can also affect monetization eligibility even when a video is allowed to remain online. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and channel monetization policies before broadcasting.

Choose a workflow for one event or continuous playback

For a single scheduled event, an encoder on a computer or compatible hardware can send a local file to YouTube. For continuous prerecorded playback, assess whether the option can reliably loop a file or playlist, sustain verified 4K/60 output, expose the codec and bitrate controls you need, and keep operating without relying on a home computer. Check current specifications, availability, and price with each provider; the available information does not establish current plan limits or pricing for Gyre.

Troubleshooting 4K/60 streams

  • You cannot start a live stream: confirm the channel is verified, live streaming is enabled, and there has been no restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube does not show 4K/60: verify the encoder output is set to 3840 × 2160 and 60 fps, and confirm the incoming preview and stream-health view. YouTube normally detects the incoming format; custom stream keys may have a manual resolution setting.
  • The feed buffers or loses connection: check actual upload throughput, lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected setting, and repeat the rehearsal under realistic conditions. Leave capacity beyond the video bitrate for network variation.
  • The encoder cannot use the selected codec: choose a codec it supports and match the bitrate setting to that codec. YouTube’s 4K/60 guidance gives separate settings for H.264 and AV1/H.265.
  • Latency is higher than expected: 4K/2160p streams use normal latency; YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable at this resolution.
  • The archive is missing after a long stream: YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use the local recording rather than relying on the automatic archive alone.
  • The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: review the material and rights for all audio and video in the file, then consult YouTube’s copyright guidance and Live Control Room notices before attempting another broadcast.
