You can use VLC to play a podcast playlist continuously, but whether your installed VLC build can send that playlist directly to YouTube Live is not established by current official VideoLAN guidance. Build and test the playlist first, then confirm stream-output support for your VLC version and platform—or use a compatible encoder that can accept VLC’s output—before scheduling a public broadcast.
YouTube’s documented workflow requires an eligible channel, an encoder stream URL and a protected stream key. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder, wait for YouTube’s preview, then click Go live in Live Control Room.
Can VLC stream to YouTube Live?
VLC can manage and play a playlist, but the available official documentation does not establish a current, reliable recipe for sending a multi-episode playlist directly from VLC to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. VideoLAN’s documentation landing page notes that its online documentation is incomplete or out of date. VLC’s stream-output options can also vary by version and platform.

Before scheduling a public event, check your installed VLC build’s stream-output support and verify that it can send the required audio and video formats to YouTube. If not, use a compatible encoder that accepts VLC’s output. Do not assume the direct VLC method works until you have tested the exact setup you plan to use.

Check channel eligibility and create the YouTube event
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Confirm eligibility before building the broadcast around a scheduled event. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance lists these requirements.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. Scheduling lets you prepare a shareable watch page in advance.
- Choose the audience and privacy settings deliberately, then note the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password.
Build and loop the podcast playlist in VLC
- Add the episode files or supported media sources to VLC’s playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Enable the control that repeats the entire playlist, not the control that repeats only the current item. VideoLAN project correspondence distinguishes “Repeat One” from “Repeat All”; the exact control and menu placement may differ across VLC versions and platforms.
- Play through the end of the list and confirm that playback returns to the first episode. Check transitions, video, and audio levels, including any gaps or silence between files.
Because VideoLAN’s online documentation is not a dependable current guide to every version’s interface, verify the labels in your installed build rather than relying on a screenshot or menu path for another platform.

Connect VLC playback to a YouTube encoder
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the server URL and stream key provided in Live Control Room. Enter them in the compatible encoder’s server/URL and key fields. If your verified VLC build supports direct output to the required destination, you may test that path; otherwise, configure a separate compatible encoder to receive VLC’s playback output.
- Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it. YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the connection.
- Never show the stream key in screenshots, example commands, public text, or a recording of your setup. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- For a scheduled event, start the encoder and wait until the preview appears in Live Control Room. Then click Go live.
See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for the platform’s connection sequence.

Set encoder output and test before going public
Use settings supported by the encoder and compatible with YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your resolution and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every setup. YouTube’s encoder settings include the current options and bitrate recommendations.
- Run a private or otherwise non-public test using representative episodes, including the loudest and quietest material and any video or artwork you intend to show.
- Check that audio and video appear in the YouTube preview and that the stream-health status is acceptable before you go live.
- Confirm that the watch page plays as expected and that VLC advances through the playlist and loops to its start.
- Leave upload capacity available beyond the stream’s bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom in its streaming tips.
Confirm rights to every episode and asset
Technical ability to play a file does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights for each podcast episode and for any embedded music, clips, artwork, or other material. Owning or downloading an episode does not by itself establish livestream rights.

End the stream and plan for the archive
When the broadcast is finished, end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder output as YouTube instructs. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous podcast playlist may run longer, so do not rely on automatic archiving for a full record of a longer broadcast. If you need a complete archive, make a separate local recording and verify YouTube’s current behavior for your event. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream archives.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that the encoder is running, its server URL and stream key match the values in Live Control Room, and the selected protocol is supported. If the key may have been exposed, reset it.
- The VLC playlist repeats one episode: Switch from repeat-current-item to repeat-playlist behavior, then test playback through the end of the list.
- The preview has no audio or video: Check the encoder’s input selection and output format, then test again with a known-good episode. Confirm both picture and sound in the preview before going live.
- The stream health is poor or playback stalls: Check encoder output settings and available upload capacity. Reduce the output bitrate if needed while keeping the video settings appropriate, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
- The scheduled broadcast does not appear live: Starting the encoder alone is not the full scheduled-event sequence. Wait for YouTube’s preview, then click Go live in Live Control Room.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded podcast videos without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera.
