To loop an MP4 on YouTube Live from an India-based VPS, enable live streaming on your channel, install FFmpeg on a Linux VPS, and send the file to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL using your stream key. FFmpeg can read the file at real-time speed and loop it indefinitely. You’ll need to supervise the process and provide a compatible video and audio stream; a VPS does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Check the channel’s live-streaming status before provisioning a server. YouTube live-streaming eligibility and methods
- A Linux VPS in India. Choose a provider and plan only after checking its sustained outbound bandwidth, transfer allowance, fair-use terms and network policies. The sources available here do not establish a suitable provider, price or bandwidth allowance for India.
- FFmpeg and an MP4 file. The file must have audio/video streams and encoding that YouTube accepts for the chosen ingest configuration. Passing the streams through without re-encoding is conditional on codec and timestamp compatibility.
- Your YouTube stream URL and stream key. Get these from Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, commit it to a repository or expose it in logs.

Enable live streaming and get the RTMPS details
- Verify the channel and confirm that live streaming is available. YouTube’s general setup guidance describes encoder streaming as one of its live-streaming methods. Get started with live streaming
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and locate its stream URL and stream key in the encoder setup.
- Use the RTMPS server URL shown by YouTube, together with the stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over SSL/TLS; do not substitute a guessed endpoint for the one shown in Live Control Room. YouTube encoder setup · YouTube RTMPS ingestion requirements
- Keep the key out of shell history and shared scripts where possible. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
Install FFmpeg and prepare the VPS
Install FFmpeg using the package manager for the Linux distribution on your VPS, or use a build that includes the required input and output support. Package names and available options vary by distribution and build; check the installed binary with ffmpeg -version and inspect an option with ffmpeg -h. Upload the MP4 to a directory readable by the account that will run FFmpeg.
Before streaming, check the file’s streams and properties with FFmpeg’s inspection tools. Confirm that it contains the intended video and audio, and note its codecs, frame rate, resolution and audio format. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and gives recommended audio settings including 128 Kbps stereo audio and 44.1 kHz stereo sampling for RTMPS. -rereads the input at its native frame rate instead of feeding the file as fast as possible; this pacing is useful when output speed matters for live streaming.-stream_loop -1loops the input indefinitely. FFmpeg options apply to inputs or outputs according to their position, so keep input options before the relevant-iand output options before the output URL.-c:v copy -c:a copyattempts to pass video and audio through without re-encoding. It works only when the file’s streams, timestamps and structure are suitable for the output and YouTube ingest. If YouTube does not accept the result, transcode to a configuration supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than assuming every MP4 is compatible.-f flvselects the output container used for this RTMP-family workflow. Confirm your FFmpeg build supports the required protocol and muxer.
FFmpeg documents -re as useful when output flow speed matters, including live streaming, and defines -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping. Test the stream before leaving it running
- Start with a short test using representative motion and audio. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and that the live preview looks and sounds right.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health information while testing. Resolve warnings about connection stability, keyframes, bitrate or unsupported media before treating the setup as ready.
- Check that the VPS can sustain outbound traffic above the configured media bitrate, with headroom for network variation. Verify the provider’s transfer limits and fair-use terms; a quoted VPS plan alone does not establish continuous-stream suitability.
- Test how the process behaves if the network or ingest connection drops. A process supervisor can restart FFmpeg after an exit, but it cannot guarantee recovery from every network, provider or YouTube failure.

Keep FFmpeg running and recover from failures
For a long-running broadcast, use a process supervisor such as systemd to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after an unexpected process exit. Configure logs with care so they do not reveal the stream key, and monitor both the VPS process and YouTube’s stream-health dashboard. A restart policy addresses process exits; it does not ensure that the source file, network, server or YouTube ingest is always available.

Plan how you will respond to a failed stream: check whether FFmpeg is running, inspect sanitized logs, confirm the VPS still has network connectivity and disk access, then check Live Control Room for ingest or stream-health issues. If YouTube has ended the broadcast or the stream key has been changed, correct the YouTube-side issue before restarting the encoder.
Plan around YouTube archives and copyright
Long broadcasts may not be archived
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a dependable recording, keep a separate copy and plan whether to end and restart the broadcast in shorter sessions. Consider how interruptions and session changes will affect viewers. Looping does not change copyright or monetization obligations
YouTube’s terms state that creators represent that they have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music rights. A licence does not necessarily prevent an automated match: YouTube says a rights owner may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID for licensed material to avoid interruption. Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the exact RTMPS URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm FFmpeg’s protocol support, and verify outbound connectivity from the VPS. Do not paste a key into a public support request or log.
- YouTube reports an ingest or encoding warning: Compare the file and output with YouTube’s current codec, bitrate, keyframe and audio recommendations. If stream copy is incompatible, transcode instead and test again.
- The video plays too quickly or stalls: Confirm that
-reis placed before the input it applies to, and check whether the VPS has enough network capacity for the output. - The loop stops after one play: Confirm that
-stream_loop -1appears before the relevant-iand that the installed FFmpeg build recognizes it. - FFmpeg exits and the channel goes offline: Inspect the process exit and sanitized logs, check disk and network access, and configure a supervisor restart policy. A restart alone will not repair a bad key, incompatible media or an unavailable ingest path.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Stop using the matched material unless you have the necessary rights and permissions. If the material is licensed, confirm that the rights owner has allowlisted the channel when required.
- The live replay is missing or incomplete: Do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream beyond YouTube’s stated 12-hour boundary; retain a separate recording if the content matters.
