You can run FFmpeg on a VPS to send a prerecorded Marathi-music stream to YouTube, but YouTube’s encoder guidance does not provide a ready-made 24/7 FFmpeg setup. You must configure and supervise the encoder yourself, verify the music rights, and plan for YouTube’s documented 12-hour archive boundary. The steps below cover YouTube’s documented setup and settings; they do not pretend that an unverified command or restart schedule is production-ready.

Before you start: confirm you can stream the music

Do not treat a working FFmpeg connection as permission to broadcast the songs. The rights needed for the particular recordings and compositions in your playlist, the territories covered, and the effect of YouTube copyright claims are not established here. Get permission that expressly covers your intended livestream and audience territories from the relevant rights holders, and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies before you broadcast. A consumer music subscription should not be assumed to grant retransmission rights.

  • Confirm that you have permission for each recording and the underlying music in it to be streamed live on YouTube.
  • Check that the permission covers the countries where viewers may watch, the planned duration, and any monetization you intend to use.
  • Keep records of permissions and be prepared for a claim or interruption even when you believe you have permission.

What you need for an FFmpeg-on-VPS stream

  • A VPS that can run your chosen FFmpeg build continuously and sustain the outbound bitrate you configure. No particular CPU, RAM, bandwidth allowance, region, or provider price is established here; check the provider’s sustained-traffic rules, transfer charges, and service terms before choosing a plan.
  • Local or VPS-accessible media files that you are authorized to stream, plus a defined playlist or playback plan.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
  • The ingest URL and stream key for the YouTube broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public logs, screenshots, source code, or a public repository.
  • An FFmpeg workflow that has been checked against your installed FFmpeg version, media formats, and intended video output. The YouTube material cited here does not establish a working FFmpeg command, playlist looping or crossfade behavior, reconnect flags, VPS sizing, or a process supervisor configuration, so a generic command should not be presented as a verified 24/7 solution.

Create the YouTube broadcast and get its ingest details

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and complete any live-stream activation steps. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for enablement, as YouTube Help notes.
  2. Create or schedule the stream. In the Live Control Room, create or schedule a broadcast and configure its title, visibility, and other audience-facing details there.
  3. Choose the encrypted ingest address. YouTube recommends RTMPS. In the Live Control Room, use the lock icon to retrieve the RTMPS URL for your stream. Use the exact URL YouTube provides; do not substitute an endpoint based on an example.
  4. Copy the stream key privately. The encoder needs both the server URL and key. Store the key somewhere accessible to the VPS process but not exposed to other users or logs.
  5. Check the broadcast state before sending media. Confirm you have selected the intended broadcast and its matching ingest details. YouTube creates the watch page when the encoder begins sending content.

Configure the FFmpeg output to match YouTube’s guidance

YouTube’s encoder settings page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video encoding, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. These are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain the stream.

Video bitrate, resolution, and keyframes

  • Choose a resolution, frame rate, and codec that match the actual visual content you plan to send. An audio-led stream still sends video; its appropriate resolution and bitrate depend on that video output and the quality you want.
  • Set the encoder to CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Use YouTube’s bitrate table for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating one number as universal. For example, YouTube lists 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps, compared with 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at the same mode. These are recommendations for those specific modes, not a VPS bandwidth guarantee.
  • Allow for a stable upload path at the configured bitrate and check the VPS provider’s sustained outbound-transfer terms. A nominal port speed alone does not establish that the server or plan can support a continuous broadcast.

Audio settings

  • Use AAC or MP3 audio, both listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
  • For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate.
  • Listen to a representative section before launch. Confirm that the audio is present, at an appropriate level, and remains synchronized with the video.

RTMPS connection details

RTMPS encrypts RTMP transport using TLS/SSL. Google’s developer guidance documents port 443 and implementation details such as SNI for encoder developers. In practice, use the RTMPS endpoint shown for your broadcast and verify that your VPS network and FFmpeg build can connect to it. A connection failure can result from using the wrong URL or port, a blocked outbound connection, or TLS/SNI incompatibility; check the exact server response and VPS firewall or provider rules rather than repeatedly changing the stream key.

Build and validate the continuous playback workflow

The VPS needs more than an encoder command: it needs a reliable source of authorized media, a defined way to advance through it, and an operator who can detect and respond to failures. FFmpeg playlist looping, crossfades, reconnect behavior, and process supervision are implementation choices that must be checked against current FFmpeg documentation and tested with your actual files. Do not assume that starting FFmpeg once makes a broadcast permanent.

  1. Prepare a representative test playlist. Include files with the formats and audio characteristics you will actually use. Check that each file decodes and that transitions behave as intended. Do not use unlicensed tracks just because the test is private or technically successful.
  2. Make the output format explicit. Decide the video stream, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format before connecting. Match those choices to YouTube’s settings above and confirm they are supported by the installed FFmpeg build.
  3. Connect using the broadcast’s RTMPS URL and key. Keep the key out of shared command history and logs where possible. Confirm that the encoder is sending to the broadcast you created.
  4. Test before the public run. YouTube says tests should include audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Watch the preview, check stream health and messages in the Live Control Room, and verify playback from a viewer’s perspective.
  5. Supervise the process and host. Decide how you will notice a stopped encoder, a stalled media source, a network failure, or a full disk, and how you will safely restore service. A service manager or monitoring setup may be appropriate, but no particular configuration or recovery interval is established here; test your own implementation rather than assuming automatic recovery.
  6. Plan around YouTube’s archive limit. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This does not establish how longer broadcasts are handled or prescribe a reliable restart strategy. If an archive matters, design and test a compliant operating plan rather than assuming that one broadcast can run indefinitely or that a particular periodic restart will work.

Test and monitor the stream

Before relying on a long-running broadcast, test the same kind of audio and visual motion, output settings, playlist transitions, and network path you expect to use. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.

  • Confirm the Live Control Room preview shows the correct broadcast and that audio is audible.
  • Watch stream health and messages for ingest or encoding warnings; correct the reported issue before treating the stream as stable.
  • Check the viewer-facing watch page from a separate device or network if practical.
  • Keep an operator able to respond. The evidence available does not establish an uptime guarantee for a VPS, FFmpeg process, or YouTube ingest.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely checks and next action
YouTube does not show an incoming feed Check that live streaming is enabled, the encoder is using the exact RTMPS URL and matching stream key for the selected broadcast, and the VPS can make the required outbound connection. Review the encoder error and Live Control Room message before changing settings.
RTMPS connection or TLS failure Verify the URL and port displayed in Live Control Room, confirm outbound port 443 is allowed by the VPS network, and check compatibility with Google’s documented TLS/SNI requirements. Do not expose the stream key while collecting logs.
Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync Test the source files independently, confirm the chosen AAC or MP3 output and stereo sample-rate/bitrate settings, and inspect the test stream in the Live Control Room. Re-test using representative files before resuming a long run.
Video quality warnings or unstable ingest Check whether the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval match YouTube’s guidance for that mode. Also check the VPS’s actual sustained outbound capacity and provider limits; a recommended encoder bitrate does not guarantee the host can maintain it.
The stream ends or the playlist stops advancing Inspect FFmpeg’s process output, media availability, disk space, and host/network status. Confirm that the playlist and recovery behavior were tested for your FFmpeg build. A restart strategy is not specified by YouTube’s general encoder instructions, so verify it before depending on it.
The broadcast runs past 12 hours and archive expectations are unclear YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours only. Do not assume a longer archive or infer a safe restart cadence from that threshold; check current YouTube guidance and test the operational plan.
