To stream Marathi songs continuously on YouTube with FFmpeg, you need three things: a playlist of compatible media files, a stable encoder-to-YouTube connection, and permission to broadcast both the sound recordings and the underlying compositions. FFmpeg can play a prepared list of files consecutively, but neither FFmpeg nor YouTube documentation guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. This guide walks through a do-it-yourself setup, its limits, and what to check before leaving it running.

Before you start: check rights and prepare the stream

Confirm you can broadcast the music

Do not assume a song is safe to stream because it is available online, purchased, or credited. YouTube Help’s “Copyright issues with live streams” says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can replace the picture with a placeholder, trigger a warning, interrupt the stream, or terminate it.

Confirm that your permission covers the sound recordings and compositions, your intended territories, and your YouTube channel. If you have a license for third-party material, YouTube says the rights owner may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license by itself may not prevent an interruption.

Decide what viewers will see

A YouTube live stream needs video as well as audio. If your Marathi tracks are audio-only, the playlist will not create a visual track for them. You must provide video separately—for example, by using compatible files that already contain video or by adding a visual source in your FFmpeg setup. The exact method depends on the files and FFmpeg build you use.

Check your files and hosting environment

  • Keep a working copy of the media and playlist on the computer or host that will run FFmpeg.
  • For the concat demuxer, use files with the same streams, codecs, and time bases. The FFmpeg Project’s “FFmpeg Formats Documentation” states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).”
  • Check the actual file durations and listen or watch across transitions. Incorrect or estimated durations can cause artifacts at file boundaries.
  • Make sure the host’s internet connection can sustain the chosen upload bitrate, and decide how you will notice and respond if the encoder or connection stops.

Create an FFmpeg playlist

Write the concat list

Create a plain-text list in the same directory as the media files. The first line must be the exact signature ffconcat version 1.0, followed by one file directive per entry:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'track-01.mp4'
file 'track-02.mp4'

Use filenames that point to the intended files, and keep their paths simple. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer defaults to safe=1, which rejects unsafe paths. Do not relax that protection unless you understand and trust the playlist and every file it references. If you do need paths outside the playlist directory, consult the concat demuxer documentation for the option’s behavior rather than applying a blanket workaround.

Make the media compatible

The concat demuxer joins files without making incompatible inputs compatible. Verify the streams, codecs, and time bases across the whole list before relying on it. If your files do not match, prepare compatible versions before using the concat playlist, or choose a different FFmpeg workflow suitable for those inputs. Check both the start and end of each file: a playlist that opens successfully can still have bad transitions or inaccurate durations.

Set up YouTube Live and connect FFmpeg

  1. Create or select the live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a live stream or select the one you intend to use. YouTube Help’s “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder” describes this encoder workflow.
  2. Copy the ingest details. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.
  3. Prepare FFmpeg’s output destination. Use YouTube’s server URL and the stream key as the destination required by your FFmpeg output configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to the ingest server.
  4. Start FFmpeg and verify the incoming stream. Start the encoder, then check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Do not treat a running FFmpeg process as proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast.
  5. Go live and keep watch. Follow the status shown in Studio, especially during startup and file transitions. Test the actual playlist and host before depending on it for an extended broadcast.

Choose encoder settings for a Marathi music stream

Start with YouTube’s documented format guidance

YouTube’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” recommends H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended ingest protocol. For a typical SDR stream, H.264 video and AAC audio are documented choices.

Set bitrate for your connection, not by guesswork

There is no single bitrate that suits every file, resolution, frame rate, and upload connection. Choose a bitrate supported consistently by the actual upload connection, then test representative material—including sections with more visual movement and louder or denser audio. A setting that exceeds available upload capacity can destabilize delivery; a very low setting can reduce quality. Monitor YouTube’s stream health while testing rather than assuming that a particular number is universally correct.

Use a two-second keyframe interval

Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where your encoder configuration allows it, and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum. If FFmpeg asks for a number of frames rather than a time interval, the frame count depends on the output frame rate; calculate it from the frame rate you actually configure.

Use an FFmpeg command as a configuration template

The exact command depends on your FFmpeg build, media streams, output frame rate, resolution, and bitrate. For a concat playlist whose entries all contain compatible video and audio, the following illustrates the settings to supply; replace every uppercase placeholder with a value appropriate to your setup. It is not a universal command or a guarantee of 24/7 operation.

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 1 -i playlist.ffconcat
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE -minrate VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE
  -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER_SIZE -g GOP_FRAMES
  -c:a aac -b:a AUDIO_BITRATE
  -f flv 'YOUTUBE_RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY'

Use this only if your playlist and output settings are suitable for the selected codecs and FFmpeg build. Set GOP_FRAMES to a two-second interval at your output frame rate, and choose video and audio bitrates and a buffer size your connection and stream profile can support. The example uses the concat demuxer’s default safe-path behavior; it does not solve incompatible files or add a visual track to audio-only material. Confirm the precise output URL format shown for your stream in Live Control Room and verify the incoming preview before going live.

Test continuity and plan for interruptions

Run a representative test first

  • Play through the real playlist, including transitions between files, and check that the picture and audio continue as expected.
  • Watch for clipping, silence, unexpected gaps, or abrupt changes in loudness.
  • Check the Live Control Room preview and health status while the test is running.
  • Test the host and connection you will actually use for the broadcast. A successful short test does not establish that the setup will run indefinitely.

Know what the documentation does not promise

A 24/7 stream is an operator’s continuity goal, not a promise made by FFmpeg or YouTube. The cited guidance explains playlist compatibility and encoder settings; it does not establish a universal command, automatic restart policy, or host configuration that will keep every setup running without interruption. Recovery depends on your FFmpeg build, host, connection, and how you supervise the process. Plan how you will detect a stopped encoder or dropped connection and how you will restart it in your own environment.

Plan separately for a complete archive

YouTube Help’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise that one continuous broadcast lasting 12 hours or more will be retained as a single complete replay. If you need a complete archive, arrange a separate recording or segment strategy and verify YouTube’s current behavior for your stream.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg rejects the playlist or a file The list syntax or path is invalid, or the default safe-path setting rejects a path. Check the exact first-line signature, each file entry, filenames, and file locations. Keep paths simple; only consider relaxing safe-path handling when you trust every input and understand the consequence.
Playback fails or breaks at a transition Files differ in streams, codecs, or time bases, or their durations are inaccurate. Check every file for compatible streams and verify actual durations. Prepare compatible inputs before using the concat demuxer.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview The encoder may not be sending to the server URL and key for the selected stream, or the output connection may not be reaching YouTube. Compare the destination in FFmpeg with the current server URL and key in Live Control Room, then inspect FFmpeg output and Studio status. Keep the key private.
Stream health is poor or delivery drops The upload connection may not sustain the configured bitrate, or the host or connection may be unstable. Test the actual connection and host, select a bitrate they can sustain, and monitor stream health. The documentation does not provide a bitrate that is right for every connection.
The stream shows a warning, placeholder, or stops YouTube may have detected third-party content. Review the rights for the sound recording and composition. If you have a license, contact the rights owner about allowlisting your channel through Content ID; permission alone may not prevent an interruption.
Audio plays but viewers see no useful picture The source files are audio-only, so the playlist has not supplied a video track. Add a suitable visual source through an FFmpeg workflow that matches your inputs, or use files that already contain compatible video. Test the resulting video stream in Studio.
