Puppeteer is headless by default, so launch it with headless: false for a visible Chrome window. Capture a separate login window with the opener page’s popup event.
If you mean a recorded video stream instead of a visible UI, Puppeteer’s Page.record() API is experimental and outputs an MP4 stream. It does not make a browser window appear, and a generic Puppeteer pattern cannot guarantee compatibility with every identity provider.
Make the Puppeteer browser window visible
Set headless: false when launching the browser. This is the supported way to watch a test or login flow in a desktop Chrome window, as described in the Puppeteer documentation and Chrome for Developers’ Puppeteer testing guide.

A headful browser on a Linux server, container, or CI runner needs a display server such as Xvfb; otherwise Chrome may fail to start even though the Puppeteer code is correct. Do not remove sandbox protections unless your deployment specifically requires it and you understand the security implications.

Use an authorized account and provider-supported flow
Interactive OAuth, SSO, and MFA screens differ by provider. Use a test account and the provider’s documented automation or testing method. Do not attempt to bypass CAPTCHA, bot checks, rate limits, device verification, or other access controls. The example below demonstrates page discovery and synchronization, not a universal way to automate any identity provider.
Capture a login popup as a separate Page
When a click opens a new tab or window, listen on the page that initiates the click. Puppeteer’s Page API documents the popup event for this purpose. The older practice of identifying spawned pages through Page.target() is deprecated for this use; use the popup event instead.

await browser.close();Replace selectors and URL checks with those in your application. A provider may redirect through several origins, use an iframe, or finish by posting a message to the opener. In those cases, wait for an application-specific signal (a URL, cookie, DOM state, or API response) rather than assuming one redirect.

Prevent races and timeouts
- Register
page.once('popup')before the click. Creating the listener afterward can miss a popup that opens immediately. - Use a bounded timeout and report the current URL when it expires. A click may be blocked by an overlay, disabled until JavaScript runs, or open a same-tab redirect instead.
- If the site sometimes opens a tab and sometimes redirects the current page, handle both outcomes. A popup event will not fire for a same-tab navigation.
- Close the popup after the callback is complete, unless the provider requires it to remain open.
- Never print passwords, authorization codes, cookies, or tokens to logs. Supply test secrets through a secret manager or environment variables.

HTTP authentication is not an HTML login form
Puppeteer’s page.authenticate() documentation covers HTTP authentication, such as a server challenge that produces a browser credential dialog. It does not fill a website’s username and password fields, approve an OAuth consent page, or complete an SSO flow. Puppeteer notes that request interception is enabled behind the scenes for this method, so measure its effect if your script handles many requests.

If your requirement is a file or stream that another process can consume, investigate the experimental Page.record() API in the current Page reference. Treat it as a separate recording feature: headless: false controls visibility, while recording produces MP4 output. Verify the API and runtime behavior against the Puppeteer version installed in your project before relying on it in production.
Reliable popup-login workflow
- Start with a supported runtime. Pin Puppeteer and its browser version in your project, and verify that the host has a display when using headful mode.
- Launch visibly only when needed. Use
headless: falsefor local debugging or a deliberately interactive test. Keep unattended jobs headless when no human needs to see the UI. - Navigate to the application. Wait for a meaningful readiness condition, not just a fixed sleep.
networkidle2can help, but a selector that proves the page is usable is usually clearer. - Arm the popup listener. Call
page.once('popup', ...)before clicking the sign-in control. - Click and validate. Confirm that the popup exists, inspect its URL, and wait for a provider-specific form or callback state.
- Complete only authorized interactions. Keep credentials in environment variables or a secret store, and follow the identity provider’s rules for test automation.
- Detect completion. Check the callback URL, an application element that appears after authentication, or another explicit signal from your application.
- Clean up. Close the popup and browser in a
finallyblock so failed tests do not leave processes running.

“Browser failed to launch” on a server
The process probably has no display. Run the job in a desktop session or configure a supported virtual display such as Xvfb, then confirm the display variable and Chrome dependencies. This is an environment problem, not a popup-selector problem.

No popup event arrives
The click may navigate the existing tab, be prevented by an overlay, or be triggered by a script that does not create a browser page. Check the click result, inspect page.url(), and test the control manually. Install the listener before the click and avoid arbitrary sleeps.
The popup opens but the selector never appears
Log the popup URL, wait for the correct navigation, and inspect frames with popup.frames(). The form may be inside an iframe, rendered only after a script completes, or replaced by a provider-specific challenge. Do not assume selectors from another provider.

Login completes but the opener is still unauthenticated
The provider may require a callback route, a postMessage handler, or a cookie on a different domain. Wait for the application’s callback or authenticated UI, and verify that the opener remains open. Cross-origin rules can prevent direct DOM access while still allowing navigation and page-level events.

HTTP credentials slow other requests
page.authenticate() enables request interception. If performance changes, use it only on the page that needs HTTP authentication and compare timings with an authorized test workload.
Headful mode works locally but not in CI
CI often has no desktop session, different fonts, or restricted sandbox permissions. Either provide a supported virtual display and matching dependencies or run the automation headless and collect logs, screenshots, or an experimental recording artifact instead of relying on a visible window.

- Prefer event-driven waits. Popup events, selectors, and application callbacks finish sooner and fail more clearly than long fixed delays.
- Limit visible sessions. A headful browser consumes a display and usually more resources than an unattended headless process. Reuse a browser only when isolation between tests is acceptable.
- Set explicit timeouts. Login providers can be slower than your application. Use a generous but finite navigation and popup timeout, and include the failing URL in diagnostics.
- Protect session data. Do not commit profiles, cookies, screenshots containing credentials, or video recordings with personal data. Delete temporary artifacts after a test.
- Expect provider changes. Identity-provider pages, consent screens, and MFA requirements can change without matching your application release. Keep selectors and completion checks isolated so they are easier to update.
- Separate debugging from production. A visible window is useful for diagnosing a flow, but an unattended service should have a clear artifact strategy and a documented display dependency if it must run headful.
