To put a live DJ and automated playback on the same YouTube stream, combine both sources into one program mix, select that mix as the encoder’s audio input, then send the encoder feed to YouTube Live. You can combine sources in a DJ mixer, audio interface, or software-routing setup; add a separate hardware mixer only if your existing signal path does not already produce a reliable combined output.

Before you start: check YouTube access and prepare the stream

YouTube’s encoder workflow requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before a scheduled broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and its encoder setup guidance.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream, then enter them in your encoder as directed by its interface. The key routes and authorizes your encoder feed; keep it private, and do not show it on screen or publish it.
  3. Use the ingest instructions provided in Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS if your encoder supports it; YouTube describes it as RTMP transmitted over TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Combine the DJ and automation into one program mix

The encoder must receive one intended program mix containing both the live DJ audio and the automated playback. YouTube supports encoder-based streams using external audio hardware, but does not prescribe a single radio-station routing configuration. Choose the point in your signal chain where both sources can be heard together and sent to the encoder as one input.

Use the mix you already have, if it carries both sources

If the DJ and automation already feed a shared computer bus, DJ mixer output, or audio-interface output, select that combined bus or device in the encoder. Do not assume that choosing two separate capture devices will combine them: confirm that the selected input actually carries both sources.

Route separate sources together

If the DJ and automation are separate, bring their outputs into a common mix before the encoder. Depending on your equipment and software, that may be a DJ mixer, an audio interface or mixer, or audio-routing software that exposes a combined bus. Verify the connection types and levels for the DJ output, playback source, any microphone, and encoder input before adding equipment.

A USB audio mixer can be useful when separate hardware sources need hands-on level control and a single output to the computer. It is not automatically necessary when the sources are already mixed. Headphones are optional but useful for monitoring what is actually being sent; they do not combine the sources.

Set levels and verify the outgoing mix

  • Listen to the combined output and confirm the DJ and automation are both present at usable, balanced levels.
  • Check that no input is muted, routed to a different bus, or being captured twice.
  • Confirm that the encoder’s selected audio device or software bus is the one you just monitored.
  • Test with audio and movement similar to the planned program, as YouTube recommends, rather than checking only an idle scene.

Set the encoder’s audio format

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. These are YouTube’s platform recommendations for the described encoder workflow, not universal quality rules for every audio use. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Select the device or software bus that carries the complete program mix, then choose a listed audio codec and the recommended sample rate and bitrate if your encoder exposes those settings. Video resolution and bitrate depend on the video you are sending; do not alter them to fix an audio-routing problem.

Test in YouTube before the broadcast

  1. Start the encoder using the stream URL and key for your test or scheduled stream. Use a private or unlisted test when that suits your workflow and account settings.
  2. Wait for the Live Control Room preview, then listen for both the live DJ and automated playback. A preview picture alone does not prove the audio mix is correct.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and audio/video quality indicators. Correct a missing source, muted input, or wrong encoder device before announcing the stream.
  4. During the broadcast, continue monitoring the outgoing mix and stream health. Keep access to the encoder’s input and stream settings so you can respond if automation goes silent or a source drops out.

Music rights: technical access is not permission

Owning a track or paying for a service that lets you listen to music does not, by itself, establish that you have the rights needed to broadcast it publicly or leave it available in an archived YouTube video. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights for live and archived content, including relevant music rights, and for applicable local requirements.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may replace a stream with a placeholder, and continued third-party content can cause a temporary interruption or termination. YouTube also says a stream may be interrupted even when the creator has a license if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Before going live, confirm with the rights owner or licensing provider that your permission covers public livestreaming and archived availability, the relevant repertoire and territories, and any required allowlisting. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams explains the platform’s scanning and interruption process.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded programming looping on YouTube rather than mix a live DJ source into the broadcast, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and does not replace the audio-routing method above for bringing a live DJ into the mix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Nothing has to stay running at home; the stream continues from the cloud with your computer off.
  • Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start with the StreamNeo free trial.
