You can loop a Hindi devotional video or playlist with FFmpeg on a Raspberry Pi and send it to YouTube Live, but 24/7 operation depends on the Pi sustaining the selected encode, a stable internet connection and power, and a recovery plan. First make sure your channel is eligible, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then test the complete setup before relying on it unattended.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16.
  • A Raspberry Pi, power supply and cooling suitable for sustained operation, plus enough storage for the media and any local recordings.
  • A reliable internet connection with upload capacity above the total stream bitrate.
  • A devotional video or playlist that plays correctly and that you have permission to stream, including its music.
  • FFmpeg installed on the Pi, with an encoding or pass-through configuration supported by that Pi and FFmpeg build.

There is no universal Raspberry Pi model or FFmpeg command that is guaranteed to encode every source format continuously. The right profile depends on the source, Pi, FFmpeg build and YouTube stream settings.

Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. If livestreaming is unavailable, check the channel’s verification and restriction status.
  2. Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values from Live Control Room rather than guessing an ingest address.
  3. Keep the key private. Do not publish it in a public script or repository. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.

YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Match the settings to the codec and capabilities you can actually sustain.

Prepare the devotional video and choose a stream profile

Check the media and rights

Play the file locally before going live. Confirm the picture, audio and audio mapping are correct, and verify that the person or organization controlling the video and music has granted the necessary streaming rights. A devotional subject does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast a recording.

Start with a sustainable profile

For H.264 at 720p30, YouTube’s current encoder settings table lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a promise that a particular Pi can encode at that profile. Begin conservatively if the Pi struggles, and leave upload headroom. YouTube’s network guidance recommends roughly 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate.

For stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. A two-second keyframe interval at 30 frames per second corresponds to 60 frames; settings must remain internally consistent with the actual frame rate and encoder. The example below is a modest starting point, not a validated profile for every source or Pi.

Loop a file and send it to YouTube with FFmpeg

Substitute your ingest URL and private key in the output address. The command uses software H.264 encoding through libx264; if it overloads the Pi, lower resolution or frame rate, use compatible pre-encoded media with stream copy where appropriate, or investigate whether your Pi and FFmpeg build support a suitable encoder.

-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; -re reads it at its native playback rate. The 2,500 kbps video rate is an illustrative low-load starting point, not a substitute for checking YouTube’s current ingest guidance and the Pi’s sustained performance. FFmpeg option ordering matters: input options belong before the input they affect, while output options belong before the destination.

Vilros Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Basic Starter Kit with Fan-Cooled Heavy-Duty Aluminum Alloy Case
  • KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
  • SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
  • SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
  • IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
  • VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.

For a playlist, prepare a playlist input compatible with your FFmpeg installation and test its transitions and audio mapping. Do not assume that a command for one video file will handle every playlist format or source codec unchanged.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

  1. Start with an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream and confirm that the YouTube preview receives both video and audio.
  2. Use representative movement and audio, not only a static screen or silent test. Check YouTube’s stream health messages.
  3. Monitor the Pi under sustained load. Watch for dropped frames, overheating, throttling, memory pressure and errors from FFmpeg.
  4. Measure upload stability while the stream is running. The total bitrate should remain below available upload capacity, with roughly 20% headroom as YouTube recommends.
  5. Test interruptions: determine how the setup behaves after a network outage, power interruption or YouTube disconnect, and arrange supervision or recovery handling before treating it as unattended.

Raspberry Pi Foundation’s May 2026 performance note compares Pi 5 software encoding with a Pi 4 hardware-encoder configuration. It does not establish continuous streaming capacity for every Pi, media format or FFmpeg build, so verify the exact hardware and software combination you intend to use.

This is YouTube’s livestream term for content providers, not individualized legal advice. Confirm that your permission covers the intended platform, territory, duration and use.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single continuous 24/7 session therefore should not be relied on to create a complete archive. If a recording matters, plan shorter sessions and consider a local recording where storage and rights permit.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube receives no stream Wrong or outdated server URL/key, network issue, or malformed output address Copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, check connectivity, and keep the key intact and private.
Video stutters, drops frames or the Pi becomes unresponsive The selected encode may exceed sustained CPU, thermal or memory capacity Monitor load and temperature; lower resolution or frame rate, choose a less demanding compatible encoding path, and retest for an extended period.
YouTube reports unstable stream health Upload bandwidth is insufficient or fluctuating Check real upload capacity during streaming, reduce total bitrate if necessary, and preserve YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% headroom.
Picture arrives without audio, or audio is wrong Input track or mapping issue, unsupported source, or incorrect audio settings Verify the file locally, inspect the selected audio stream and mapping, and check sample rate and AAC settings against the source and YouTube configuration.
Live stream is interrupted despite being licensed Content ID match or a rights-owner allowlist requirement Contact the rights owner about the channel’s allowlist status and confirm the license covers livestream use.
The stream stops after power or internet loss A local encoder cannot continue without power and connectivity; recovery may not be automatic Stabilize power and network, then add and test a restart/recovery approach suitable for the operating system and FFmpeg build.

Or let it run in the cloud

If maintaining a Pi, home power and internet connection is not the right fit, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not camera broadcasting. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free day.
