You can stream a lossless music library to YouTube as the source, but you cannot deliver lossless audio to YouTube Live viewers through YouTube’s documented live ingest workflow. For a YouTube radio channel, send a compatible AAC or MP3 feed, keep your lossless masters separately if needed, clear the music rights, and plan how the stream will be monitored and restarted.

Can You Stream Lossless Audio to YouTube Live?

Not as lossless listener delivery. YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS live-ingest audio codecs are AAC and MP3; YouTube then transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. A lossless source file does not change that path. The supported ingest and playback behavior is described in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance and the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

That does not make a lossless library useless. Keep WAV, FLAC, ALAC, or another lossless master for your own archive or production workflow, then encode a compatible stream for YouTube. Do not describe the YouTube broadcast as lossless, and do not treat a lossless local recording as evidence that viewers receive the same file or encoding.

Choose YouTube’s Ingest Path and Audio Settings

For the common RTMP/RTMPS workflow, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz stereo audio at 128 kbps and supports AAC or MP3 audio. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not a promise of lossless sound. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure protocol. Check its current encoder settings and bitrate guidance before configuring a production stream.

Ingest path Published audio requirements Practical implication
RTMP/RTMPS AAC or MP3; YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo. Use these as a compatible starting point. Neither codec setting creates lossless playback.
HLS AAC and one audio track, as specified in YouTube’s HLS ingest guide. Follow HLS-specific requirements; do not assume RTMP/RTMPS settings apply unchanged.

These are YouTube live-ingest requirements and recommendations, not universal settings for other platforms or ordinary video uploads. YouTube’s API documentation also describes supported audio codecs and stream health diagnostics for unsupported codecs or multiple audio streams: see LiveStreams and Configuration Issues for LiveStream Resources.

Set Up a 24/7 Music Stream Yourself

  1. Prepare the music and a lossless archive. Organize the recordings you have permission to broadcast. Keep the original lossless files separately if archive or production quality matters; the live encoder will send a compatible feed, not the original files untouched.
  2. Choose an encoder and ingest method. Configure an encoder to send to YouTube using the server URL and stream key shown for your stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering those values in the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as a credential and do not publish it.
  3. Configure audio for the selected protocol. For RTMP/RTMPS, select AAC or MP3, stereo, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps as the YouTube-recommended starting point. For HLS, use AAC with one audio track in line with the HLS requirements. Do not select FLAC, ALAC, or WAV as YouTube live-ingest codecs on the assumption that lossless source media makes them supported.
  4. Build the playlist or program schedule. Ensure the encoder or playback system can keep the program moving and that you know how to detect silence, playback failure, or a disconnected encoder. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not specify a guaranteed 24/7 playlist architecture or universal restart interval, so validate your own complete setup.
  5. Test before announcing the station. Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream, check audio output and stream health in Live Control Room, and confirm that your encoder settings and playback chain behave as intended. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health during it; see its encoder guidance.
  6. Monitor and manage stream endings. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Do not assume a single all-day broadcast will be archived as one complete video. Plan how to end and restart broadcasts, and how to start a replacement stream if the encoder or YouTube connection stops. The official workflow explains ending an encoder stream and automatic archiving; it does not establish a guaranteed uninterrupted 24/7 service method.

Clear Music Rights Before Going Live

You are responsible for having the rights needed for the actual livestream. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions state that the provider must have necessary rights for live content, including relevant music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. A track purchase, consumer streaming subscription, or vague “royalty-free” label does not by itself establish permission for a continuous worldwide YouTube radio broadcast. Confirm the permitted use, territories, duration, and streaming conditions with the rights holder or licensing provider.

Also ask whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID. YouTube says that even a licensed third-party track can trigger a live interruption when the channel has not been added to the relevant content owner’s allowlist. Resolve this with the rights owner before launch and retain the licence and any allowlist confirmation. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Plan for Continuity, Archives, and Monetization

Continuity is an operational responsibility

A 24/7 channel needs a way to notice a failed encoder, lost connection, stopped playback, or YouTube interruption and respond. YouTube’s published workflow explains stream setup, monitoring, ending, and archiving, but does not establish a guaranteed 24/7 uptime architecture, restart interval, or API eligibility for every channel. Build and test a recovery plan rather than promising uninterrupted operation.

  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Archives have a documented time boundary

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single stream intended to run all day should not be assumed to create one complete archive. If you need complete recordings, plan for the stream lifecycle and maintain a separate local recording where appropriate.

Monetization is not automatic

Live monetization features depend on channel eligibility and settings, and ad delivery is not guaranteed. A technically continuous radio stream does not establish monetization eligibility or revenue.
