To stream media from VLC to another device, choose HTTP when the receiver should connect to a URL, or RTP when VLC should send to a specific receiver or multicast group. The steps below use the VLC 3.0 Desktop User Documentation examples; labels and behavior can differ in later or platform-specific builds.
Choose a VLC streaming method
HTTP, RTP, RTSP, and SAP solve different parts of the streaming setup. The comparison below summarizes the behavior described in VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 documentation; it is not a guarantee that every network, VLC build, or third-party player supports each combination.
| Method | How delivery works | What you configure | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP | Pull: a receiver requests the stream from VLC. | The sender publishes a port and path; the receiver opens the sender’s URL. | A receiver should connect using a straightforward URL. |
| RTP unicast | Push: VLC sends media to one receiver. | The sender specifies the receiver’s IP address and port. | You know the address of one receiving device. |
| RTP multicast | Push: VLC sends media to a multicast group. | The sender specifies a group address and port; receivers join that group. | Multiple devices on a multicast-capable network should receive the stream. |
| RTSP session with RTP | The client requests a session; the sender negotiates parameters and sends RTP media. | The sender publishes an RTSP endpoint; the client opens its RTSP URL. | Session negotiation is useful for the stream. |
| SAP with multicast | Discovery aid for announced streams. | Clients must support the mechanism and be able to discover the multicast announcement. | You want to reduce manual discovery work on a multicast network. |
VideoLAN describes HTTP and UDP through VLC’s standard output module and RTP through a separate RTP module. HTTP is pull-oriented; RTP is push-oriented. RTSP handles session setup in the documented example, while RTP carries the media. SAP helps clients discover multicast streams; it does not provide public internet access or turn VLC into a hosted streaming service. See VideoLAN’s standard output module documentation and streaming documentation.
Set up a stream in VLC’s interface
- Open Media > Stream and choose the file or other input you want to send.
- Proceed to the streaming destination or method options and select HTTP, UDP, or RTP as appropriate to your goal.
- Choose a transcoding profile and encapsulation that fit the output method and the receiving player.
- Configure the destination, such as an HTTP port and path or an RTP address and port, then start the stream.
- On the receiving device, open the corresponding network URL in VLC or another compatible player.
These menu directions come from VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 tips and tricks. Menu names and available options may differ in later versions or platform-specific builds. The documentation advises selecting a transcoding profile and encapsulation appropriate to the output; it does not establish one universally preferred format.

Stream a file over HTTP
Use HTTP when the sender should make an endpoint available and each receiver should connect to it. In the VLC 3.0 documentation example, the sender streams sample.mp4 using port 8090 and the path sample:
vlc sample.mp4 --sout="#std{access=http, mux=ts, dst=:8090/sample}"
The mux=ts setting is important: VideoLAN warns that omitting the mux makes this example fail. The command is an example from the VLC 3.0 documentation, not a universal configuration for every file or VLC release. See Stream over HTTP.
Connect from another device
Find the sender’s local-network IP address, then substitute it for the example address below. If the sender is 192.168.0.101, a receiver on the same LAN can try:
http://192.168.0.101:8090/sample
VLC has published the endpoint, but it does not send the HTTP stream to a receiver until that receiver requests it. The example assumes devices on the same router or local network; it does not establish that the endpoint is reachable through arbitrary routers, firewalls, or the public internet.

Send with RTP to one receiver or a multicast group
RTP is push-oriented: the sender specifies where to send media. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 example sends to one receiver at 192.168.0.102 on port 5010:
vlc sample.mp4 --sout="#rtp{mux=ts, dst=192.168.0.102, port=5010}"
On the receiving device, open rtp://:5010. The sender and receiver must agree on the port and be able to communicate on the network. The example uses port 5010; the guide also mentions 5004 as a default RTP port, so neither value should be treated as mandatory for every setup. See Stream over RTP.

Use multicast for multiple receivers
For multicast, replace the unicast destination with a multicast group address. The documentation illustrates 239.255.255.250; this is an example, not a universal address assignment. Receivers join using the same group and port:
Recommended Free Tools
rtp://@239.255.255.250:5010
Multicast depends on support and configuration in the local network and receiving devices. A router or access point may not forward multicast traffic as expected, so a correct VLC address alone does not ensure that every receiver will get the stream.

Use RTSP for session setup, or SAP for discovery
In VideoLAN’s RTSP example, VLC exposes an RTSP endpoint while RTP transports the media. The sender command is:
vlc sample.mp4 --sout="#rtp{sdp=rtsp://:8090/stream}"
A client on the LAN opens:
rtsp://192.168.0.101:8090/stream
Here, RTSP is the session-control and negotiation layer, while RTP carries the media. SAP serves a different purpose: it can announce multicast streams so compatible clients can discover them instead of requiring each viewer to enter the stream address manually. Neither RTSP nor SAP makes a local stream publicly accessible or provides the features of a production broadcast platform. See VideoLAN’s RTSP streaming example.
Stream a live camera input
A camera is needed only if the source is live video rather than a media file. VideoLAN lists video acquisition among VLC’s input capabilities on its VLC features page. Select the camera as the input in VLC’s streaming workflow, then choose and configure an output method as above. That capability listing does not establish compatibility with a particular webcam, operating system, or device driver.

The official examples are local-network illustrations, not guarantees across every firewall, router, operating system, VLC version, or third-party player. Use these checks to narrow down a connection problem:
- Verify the destination: For HTTP, use the sender’s current LAN IP address, port, and exact path. For RTP, ensure the receiver is listening on the sender’s destination port; for multicast, confirm both sides use the same group and port.
- Check local firewall rules: The sender or receiver firewall may block the chosen traffic. Allow the relevant application or port only as appropriate for your network and security policy.
- Confirm network reachability: Make sure the devices are on a network that permits them to communicate. Guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, or router rules can prevent local device-to-device traffic.
- For multicast, check network support: Confirm that the router, access point, and receiver support multicast delivery and that it is enabled where required.
- Check the output format: Match the selected mux, encapsulation, and transcoding profile to the chosen method and receiving player. The HTTP example specifically requires a mux.
- Test with a compatible receiver: If a third-party player cannot open the stream, try VLC on the receiving device to help distinguish a player compatibility issue from a network issue.
VLC is free and can stream a file without additional hardware. A camera is relevant only when you want to stream live video, and no particular model is established as compatible by the feature listing.
