You can stream Mixxx audio to YouTube, but Mixxx does not send a broadcast directly to YouTube. Mixxx’s documented Live Broadcasting feature sends audio to Shoutcast or Icecast; to reach YouTube, route or capture Mixxx audio in a separate encoder such as OBS Studio, add a visual source, and enter the YouTube stream URL and key there.
Can Mixxx stream directly to YouTube?
No—not through Mixxx’s documented Live Broadcasting destination. The Mixxx 2.5 manual describes sending audio to Shoutcast and Icecast servers, while YouTube’s encoder workflow requires an encoder to send the stream URL and stream key. Use Mixxx as the audio player and mixer, then use a separate encoder to package the audio with video for YouTube.
This guide covers the architecture and settings without assuming a particular operating system’s loopback-audio method. The exact way to expose Mixxx audio as an encoder input depends on your OS, audio devices, permissions, and any routing software you use.

Choose how Mixxx audio reaches the encoder
| Route | What you configure | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local audio capture | Configure an OS-supported loopback or audio-capture input, then select it as the encoder’s audio source. | A broadcast intended for YouTube, without a separate public radio stream. | Setup is system-specific; audio routing and permissions must be tested on the computer running Mixxx and the encoder. |
| Radio server plus encoder | Configure Mixxx to broadcast to Shoutcast or Icecast, then have an encoder ingest the station audio and send its output to YouTube. | When you also want the internet-radio stream to remain independently available. | More services and settings to manage. Confirm in the encoder’s current documentation that it can ingest the specific server output. |
Mixxx documents the Shoutcast/Icecast leg, but support for a particular server input in a particular encoder is not established by the Mixxx manual. Do not treat Mixxx’s server broadcast as YouTube ingestion.
Set up Mixxx’s radio-server output, if you need one
- In Mixxx, open Preferences → Live Broadcasting. Menu labels may differ by release or platform; consult the manual matching your installed version if the path is different.
- Select and configure the Shoutcast or Icecast connection using the host, port, mount, login, and format supplied by your radio-server provider. For Icecast, Mixxx requires a mount value. Enter the hostname or IP in the host field and the port separately; do not paste a complete URL into the host field.
- Check that the selected streaming format is accepted by the server. Mixxx warns that Shoutcast does not support Ogg Vorbis.
- Save the settings, then use Options → Enable Live Broadcasting to start Mixxx’s broadcast to that server.
These settings connect Mixxx to a radio server; they do not connect it to YouTube. For a local-capture workflow, configure your OS-supported capture or loopback input instead and verify the encoder receives the playing Mixxx audio.

Configure the encoder and YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select a live stream. YouTube’s eligibility requirements include a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- In the encoder, choose the audio input carrying Mixxx. For local capture, select the loopback or capture device you configured. For a radio-server route, use an encoder input that its current documentation confirms can receive that station audio.
- Add a video source: for example, a still image, a visualizer, or other suitable video. YouTube Live is a video-stream destination, so audio alone from Mixxx is not the complete encoder output.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the corresponding encoder fields. YouTube describes the key as like the stream’s password and address: keep it private, and do not show it in a recording, screenshot, or on-air visual.
- Choose a protocol and encoding settings supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options, with AAC or MP3 audio; it recommends RTMPS. For a typical stereo stream, its advanced audio recommendations include 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use the current table at YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the codec and video resolution you select.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube’s guidance says not to exceed 4 seconds. Set resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate for the visual content and a stable connection. A static radio image generally does not need a high video bitrate; prioritize clean audio and reliable delivery.
- Start the encoder and check the stream preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Start or confirm the broadcast using the controls for the stream workflow you selected.
Test the broadcast before going live
Run a private or unlisted test where possible. Include representative audio and any motion in the visual source, rather than testing only silence or a static screen if the final program will differ. YouTube advises testing before a live stream and checking audio/video quality and stream health.
- Confirm Mixxx is playing and the encoder’s selected input shows audio activity.
- Check that the YouTube preview shows both picture and sound.
- Watch the encoder and YouTube stream-health indicators for warnings or interruptions.
- Check available upload bandwidth and avoid saturating the connection with other traffic. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; this is platform advice, not a guarantee of stability.

Common problems and fixes
The encoder receives no Mixxx audio
Check that Mixxx is playing, that the encoder has the intended capture input selected, and that the operating system has granted any required audio permissions. Verify the routing or loopback device independently. The precise fix depends on your OS and audio configuration.
The encoder connects, but YouTube has no preview
Recheck the stream URL, stream key, protocol, and encoder settings against the current YouTube Live stream. Make sure the encoder is actually sending, and that the stream has been started or confirmed in Live Control Room when required by its workflow.

Mixxx cannot connect to Icecast
Confirm that the host field contains only a hostname or IP address, the port is in its separate field, and the mount is filled in. Check the provider’s current credentials and server details.
The radio server rejects the Mixxx stream
Check that Mixxx’s configured audio format is supported by the server. In particular, the Mixxx manual notes that Shoutcast does not support Ogg Vorbis.

The YouTube broadcast is unstable
Check outbound bandwidth, competing network use, and encoder stream-health warnings. Leave upload headroom, then test again with representative audio and motion before relying on the stream.
Stop cleanly and keep the stream secure
End the broadcast through YouTube Studio and stop the encoder as appropriate for the workflow. If you also used Mixxx’s Shoutcast/Icecast broadcast, disable that separately when it is no longer needed. Consult YouTube’s current guidance for archiving behavior and limits; these can change. If a stream key has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep an uploaded radio program or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, rather than mix live from Mixxx, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera or stream to platforms other than YouTube.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
