You can send an internet radio station to YouTube Live by having FFmpeg take audio from the station’s stream URL, pair it with a still image, encode the result, and send it to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. The command below is an illustrative template, not a tested recipe: radio formats, FFmpeg builds, network conditions, and YouTube credentials vary. Test it in your own setup before relying on it.

What you need before you start

  • An internet radio stream URL that FFmpeg can access, including any required authentication details.
  • A still image you have permission to use, such as a station graphic.
  • FFmpeg installed with compatible video and audio encoders. This example uses libx264 and AAC; available encoders depend on your build.
  • A YouTube channel and a stream configured in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • Permission to rebroadcast the station and its underlying recordings. Technical access to a stream does not establish those rights; confirm the station’s terms and the relevant rights for your intended territory.

First confirm the station URL works in FFmpeg and identify its actual audio format. The right input handling can depend on the station server, its codec, and whether it requires authentication. No specific station endpoint is established here.

Get YouTube’s stream destination and protect the key

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or select a stream.
  2. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, put it in a public script, or expose it in logs.
  3. For encrypted ingest, use RTMPS. YouTube says to retrieve the RTMPS URL through the lock icon in Live Control Room rather than assuming the ordinary RTMP URL is the one to use. The endpoint and slash/key formatting must match what YouTube displays for your stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and RTMPS instructions.

Run an illustrative FFmpeg command

Replace cover.jpg, RADIO_STREAM_URL, and the final destination with your actual values. Replace the endpoint placeholder with the exact RTMPS URL and private stream key shown in Live Control Room. Do not copy a real key into a public or shared script.

ffmpeg -re -loop 1 -i cover.jpg -i 'RADIO_STREAM_URL'
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
  -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 2500k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'

This is a starting pattern assembled from FFmpeg’s input/output model and YouTube’s encoding guidance; it has not been run or tested. Confirm command behavior against your installed FFmpeg version and documentation.

What the important options do

  • -re reads the input at its native rate, which is useful when sending a live-like feed rather than processing a file as quickly as possible.
  • -loop 1 -i cover.jpg repeats the still image as a video input in commonly used FFmpeg builds. Confirm loop behavior and still-image timing for your installed version.
  • -i 'RADIO_STREAM_URL' opens the station’s audio input. If the URL needs authentication, use a method appropriate to your station and keep credentials private.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 explicitly selects video from the first input (the image) and audio from the second input (the radio feed). If the station input exposes a different stream layout, the mapping may need adjustment.
  • -c:v libx264 encodes the still-image video as H.264. -preset veryfast trades compression efficiency for lower encoding workload; -tune stillimage is intended for a static image.
  • -r 30 sets 30 frames per second. -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or a 2-second keyframe interval at 30 fps.
  • -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize set example video bitrate and rate-control values. The template’s 2.5 Mbps target is within YouTube’s stated 720p30 range, but the source image dimensions and output size are not explicitly set here; choose a resolution and bitrate that match your actual output and available upload capacity.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p selects a widely compatible pixel format.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 encodes stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. A station stream may already use a codec that can be remuxed, but AAC encoding is a straightforward baseline. If AAC encoding is unavailable, use a supported YouTube-compatible encoder.
  • -f flv selects the output container commonly used for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. The RTMPS destination must be precisely the endpoint format supplied in Live Control Room.

These are example settings, not universal requirements. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. For 720p at 30 fps, YouTube Help gives 3 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate, with a 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps maximum. It recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio at 44.1 kHz. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Start the broadcast and verify it before relying on it

  1. Run the adjusted command and wait for the stream to appear in the Live Control Room preview.
  2. Check that the image is visible and the station audio is audible. Review stream health and any encoder messages before starting or sharing the broadcast.
  3. Test with audio and movement comparable to your planned broadcast. YouTube Help advises: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” For a still-image radio stream, verify the actual audio feed and the intended stream behavior.
  4. Monitor FFmpeg output, the network connection, and Live Control Room stream health while the broadcast runs.
  5. When finished, stop FFmpeg and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat one session as an indefinite broadcast.

Choose ingest and encoding settings for your situation

Decision Practical choice What to know
Ingest protocol RTMPS for a typical static-image radio broadcast YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. HLS is a documented alternative for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support, but its segmented delivery has higher latency. See RTMPS guidance and YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
Video codec H.264 for the template YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. Encoder availability depends on the FFmpeg build and system.
Video bitrate For 720p30, use YouTube’s 3 Mbps recommendation as a reference YouTube Help lists 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps maximum for 720p30. Your stable upload capacity and actual output settings matter; run a speed test and test before broadcasting.
Audio AAC or MP3 YouTube recommends 128 Kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz. Actual radio source formats vary.
Keyframes 2 seconds recommended YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. In this template, 30 fps with -g 60 yields a 2-second GOP.

Troubleshoot common failures

No audio or the wrong audio stream

The station URL may not be directly accessible, may require authentication, or may expose audio differently than the assumed first audio stream. Confirm the source plays and inspect its actual streams, then adjust the input handling or -map selection. Do not assume every radio URL is a direct audio file or that every endpoint has the same codec.

FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder

Your installed build may not include libx264 or AAC encoding support. Check the encoders available in that build and select a supported video/audio encoder accepted by YouTube. If you change encoders, verify the resulting format and stream health in Live Control Room before using it for a real broadcast.

YouTube does not receive the stream

Check that the stream is active in Live Control Room, that you copied the right RTMPS endpoint through the lock icon, and that the private key and endpoint formatting match exactly. Re-copy credentials if needed, but never paste the key into a public log or forum post.

Unstable stream health or dropped connection

The station source, FFmpeg process, or upload connection may have stopped or become unstable. Confirm each remains available and that upload capacity can sustain the configured bitrate. A local FFmpeg process does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted or 24/7 delivery; the sources cited here do not establish a dependable automatic-restart configuration.

Image loop or timing behaves unexpectedly

Still-image loop behavior depends on FFmpeg semantics and build. Confirm -loop 1 and the input timing with your installed version, then check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the output.
