You can stream an internet radio station to YouTube from a Raspberry Pi by receiving the station’s audio, pairing it with a visual, encoding both into a compatible live feed, and sending that feed to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. RTMPS is the usual starting point. The exact receive command depends on the station’s URL and protocol, so first confirm those details and that you have permission to rebroadcast its programming.

Before you start: confirm permission and station details

A station URL that anyone can open is not permission to rebroadcast its audio. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, and a match can result in a placeholder image, warnings, interruptions, or termination. A license may not prevent interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. You are responsible for obtaining the rights needed for the broadcast, including music-related rights. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and the applicable platform terms.

Before configuring an encoder, collect the station’s actual stream URL and verify its transport, authentication requirements, audio codec, and any required request headers, such as a user agent. Those details are station-specific; the YouTube and Raspberry Pi guidance does not establish a universal radio URL or command. Check the station operator’s documentation or ask the operator.

What the signal path looks like

The Pi receives and decodes the station’s network audio. An encoder combines that audio with a video layer—often a still image or simple animation—then sends the audiovisual feed to YouTube. YouTube’s standard encoder workflow expects audio and video, so an audio-only source needs a visual for the stream presentation. You do not need an analog capture card just to receive audio delivered over the network.

Prepare the Raspberry Pi

  1. Set up Raspberry Pi OS. Install a suitable image and complete the board’s initial setup using the official Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.
  2. Connect reliable networking. The Pi must receive the station feed and maintain an upload connection to YouTube. Measure upload speed, not just download speed.
  3. Use the correct power supply for your board. Power requirements vary by model; follow the model-specific guidance in the Raspberry Pi documentation.
  4. Choose an encoder the Pi can sustain. The documentation does not benchmark particular Pi models for this workload. Use a board and encoder that can continuously receive the source and encode your chosen video profile; test the setup rather than assuming a model will manage a given resolution.

All Raspberry Pi models support audio output over USB and HDMI, but 3.5 mm audio hardware depends on the model. For this network-source workflow, audio output from the Pi is not required if the encoder can route the decoded station audio directly into the outgoing stream.

Choose an ingestion protocol

Protocol When it fits What to check
RTMPS A general starting option for a compatible encoder; YouTube recommends the encrypted RTMP option. Encoder support, station-audio and visual handling, selected audio/video settings, and the URL and key shown for the event.
HLS When the encoder or workflow specifically needs HLS. HLS has more specific packaging requirements and higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. YouTube specifies muxed M2TS audio/video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and media playlist segments of one to four seconds.

For a first setup, use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube’s HLS requirements are documented in its HLS ingestion guide; because HLS sends segments, its latency is higher.

Create a YouTube live event and keep the key private

  1. Enable live streaming on the YouTube channel you intend to use, if it is not already enabled.
  2. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the event or stream.
  3. Copy the displayed ingestion URL and stream key for the chosen protocol. Follow the encoder’s interface: some ask for the URL and key separately, while others use a stream-name field. YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference describes ingestion addresses, stream names, and protocol types.
  4. Enter them in the encoder without exposing them. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, or public repositories. Reset it if it is exposed; see YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.

Use the current event’s displayed URL and key, not a hard-coded endpoint copied from an old tutorial. If your encoder separates the fields, do not concatenate them unless its instructions say to.

Set audio, video, and bandwidth

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio and recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings before settling on a profile, because platform recommendations can change.

Example video profile YouTube-published H.264 video bitrate How to use the figure
720p at 30 fps Recommended: 8 Mbps; minimum: 3 Mbps YouTube Help’s encoder-settings page, accessed 2026. This is a platform recommendation, not a Pi performance benchmark.
480p at 30 fps Recommended: 4 Mbps; minimum: 0.4 Mbps YouTube Help’s encoder-settings page, accessed 2026. This is a platform recommendation, not a Pi performance benchmark.

Choose a resolution and bitrate that your visual, encoder, and upstream connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings list recommendations by resolution and codec; a table value does not establish that a particular Pi can encode that profile continuously. YouTube’s streaming tips advise allowing about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate. Test under the conditions you expect during the broadcast.

Configure and test the stream

  1. Set the encoder’s source. Configure it to receive the verified station URL and decode its audio. Authentication and request headers, if needed, must match the station’s requirements.
  2. Add a visual layer. Provide video alongside the audio, even if the presentation is a still image. Confirm your encoder’s audio and video are both mapped into the outgoing feed.
  3. Enter YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and key. Use the values for the event you created and the field format expected by your encoder.
  4. Apply a conservative profile. Set supported audio, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and a video bitrate and resolution that leave upload headroom.
  5. Run an unlisted or otherwise controlled test. Include the same kind of audio and visual activity expected in the actual stream. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and its messages.
  6. Check the result in Live Control Room. Confirm the station is audible, the visual appears, audio and video stay synchronized, and YouTube reports healthy ingestion before relying on the stream.

YouTube’s LiveStreams API health diagnostics include issues such as low bitrate, mismatched frame rate, unsupported audio codec, incorrect audio sample rate, and no audio stream. Use the reported diagnostic to narrow down the failing part of the chain.
