To stream an internet radio station live on YouTube in India, send the station’s program audio from an encoder to a broadcast created in YouTube Live Control Room. First confirm the channel can livestream, route its audio feed into the encoder, add YouTube’s stream details, test the actual program and connection, then check the preview before going live. Before any of that, clear the rights for the music and other content on YouTube: a terrestrial-radio license should not be assumed to cover a YouTube simulcast.
What you need before you start
This guide is for an existing internet radio station sending its program to YouTube through an encoder. The station can use an audio-led presentation with a static or simple visual, or include live studio video. The exact way to get audio from a particular station’s playout system into an encoder depends on its software and audio routing; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not prescribe one universal signal path.
- A verified YouTube channel with livestreaming access. YouTube’s current start guide says the channel must not have had livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person starting the livestream must be at least 16.
- An encoder-capable computer or other encoder, the station’s program audio routed into it, and a stable outbound internet connection.
- Rights that cover the material you plan to stream, the relevant uses and the territories where the stream may be available.
You do not need to buy a dedicated hardware encoder for every basic setup. YouTube lists microphones, headsets, mixers and hardware encoders as examples for more involved productions, not mandatory equipment. A USB audio interface may help if you need to connect studio microphones or other external audio equipment to the streaming computer; it is unnecessary if the playout system already supplies usable computer audio.

Choose a simple audio or video setup
| Approach | What goes to YouTube | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Audio-led | The station program audio plus a static or simple visual source. | When the priority is carrying the radio program and you do not need a live studio picture. |
| Audio with live studio video | The station audio and a live video source through the encoder. | When presenters, guests or studio activity are part of the broadcast. Video adds production and upload demands. |
Use the station’s existing playout and routing if they can provide a clean feed to the encoder. Add a mixer or interface only when the sources you need cannot otherwise be connected or controlled adequately. There is no single audio-routing application specified by YouTube for every internet radio system.

Set up the YouTube broadcast and encoder
- Confirm livestream access. Verify the channel and check its livestream eligibility in YouTube. Resolve any restriction before scheduling a broadcast.
- Create or schedule the stream. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or manage a broadcast using the encoder workflow. Use the event’s title, visibility and schedule appropriate to your station.
- Route the station audio into the encoder. Select the audio input carrying the station’s actual program. Add a visual source if you want one. Check that the encoder is receiving the intended feed rather than silence, a microphone alone or a separate desktop sound.
- Enter YouTube’s stream details. Copy the server information and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the stream key as a secret: someone with access to it may be able to send input to the broadcast. Do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot.
- Choose compatible encoding settings. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 as supported video codecs, and AAC or MP3 for audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 kbps. For a radio-first stream, choose a modest video resolution and bitrate suited to the visual presentation and your stable upload capacity; increasing video quality does not improve the radio audio by itself.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Confirm that the audio is present and intelligible, the visual is correct if used, and Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream. Check the channel or watch page before promoting the link to listeners.
The settings above are YouTube Help recommendations for its encoder workflow, not a guarantee of results on a particular network or encoder. Its pages and Live Control Room labels can change, so verify the current values and controls before broadcast.
Test upload capacity and the complete program
Measure outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube’s current streaming tips recommend allowing 20% bandwidth headroom above the total outgoing stream bitrate. The station should test before its intended broadcast and monitor stream health and audio/video quality. A useful test reproduces the actual program audio and any motion in the visual; a silent screen or static desktop test may not expose the same problems.

Clear music and broadcast rights before going live
YouTube’s livestream terms put the rights responsibility on the content provider. They require the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content on Google services, including music rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants, and to meet applicable territorial requirements. The terms also require compliance with laws and regulations applicable to the live content. This is a platform obligation, not a determination that any particular Indian license is sufficient.
For a station playing commercial music, assess at least the underlying musical and literary works and the sound recordings separately. Check the actual agreement, repertoire, uses and territories rather than relying on a broad description such as “radio license.”

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Musical and literary works: IPRS describes licenses for public performance and communication to the public by broadcasting or streaming for repertoire it controls, and identifies internet interactive and non-interactive licensing categories. Its guidance does not establish that every right is included in a particular station’s arrangement or that all repertoire is covered.
- Sound recordings: PPL India describes a radio broadcast license for its repertoire on terrestrial private or public FM and community radio. Its FAQ says it does not issue sound-recording licenses for digital-platform use and directs users to individual labels for that use. Do not assume a terrestrial-radio permission extends to YouTube; confirm the contract scope with the labels or other relevant rightsholders.
- Broadcasts and performances from others: The Copyright Office’s published Copyright Act text addresses broadcast reproduction rights and performers’ rights, including rights related to broadcasting and communication to the public. If your station relays another broadcaster or includes live performances, establish the necessary permissions for those elements too.
- Territories and archived use: A YouTube stream may be accessible outside India. Confirm that your rights cover the territories where it can be viewed and the uses you intend, including any later availability as a recording. If the rights are territorially limited, determine whether restrictions such as geoblocking are needed.
Whether a particular station is cleared depends on its catalogue, contracts, rightsholders, planned live and archived uses, and territories. If any part is unclear, obtain written clearance from the relevant rightsholders and advice from an India-qualified copyright professional before broadcasting. IPRS and PPL guidance describes their own repertoire and licensing scope; neither page, by itself, resolves every station’s rights position.
Troubleshoot common launch problems
| Symptom | Check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder cannot start a broadcast. | Channel livestream eligibility, restrictions, and whether the stream key and server details match the event in Live Control Room. | Resolve channel access issues first, then copy the current stream details from the intended broadcast into the encoder again. |
| Live Control Room receives a stream, but there is no station audio. | The encoder’s selected audio input and whether the station feed is reaching that input. | Route the program output to the encoder’s chosen input, then verify it with a representative audio test before going live. |
| Audio is intermittent or the stream health is poor. | Outbound upload capacity, network stability, and whether the outgoing bitrate leaves the recommended headroom. | Reduce the total stream bitrate or video demands, stabilize the connection, and repeat a full test. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom over the stream bitrate. |
| The picture is needlessly demanding or the visual is wrong. | Whether the selected video resolution and bitrate suit the actual image, and whether the encoder is sending the intended visual source. | For an audio-led broadcast, use a simple visual and a proportionate video setting; verify the preview before starting publicly. |
| The stream is technically healthy but music rights are uncertain. | Whether permissions cover the sound recording and underlying work, YouTube/digital use, the intended territories and any archived availability. | Pause the launch until the relevant rightsholders confirm the scope in writing or qualified counsel advises on it. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a genuinely live feed from the radio station’s playout system or studio, use the encoder workflow above: StreamNeo is for streaming uploaded videos and does not take a live camera or live radio feed. If you instead want to put a prerecorded radio program into a video and keep that uploaded video or a playlist live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded content streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
