To stream an Indian community FM station’s online feed on YouTube, create a live event in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into an encoder, route the station feed to the encoder, and provide a video image or slate alongside the audio. Before transmitting, confirm that the station has the necessary rights and permissions for the YouTube stream and any archive. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and the rules for whether an existing Indian community-radio permission covers a YouTube simulcast are not settled by the official sources cited here.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before a planned broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the workflow.
  • The station’s online audio feed and an encoder that can send it to YouTube. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; the right choice depends on the station’s existing signal path and equipment.
  • A video source. An audio-only radio feed still needs a visual presentation, such as a station logo, programme slate, or other appropriate graphic.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream settings.
  • Confirmed authority to retransmit the station’s output and to use the music and programme material in a YouTube live stream and any resulting archive.

You do not automatically need to buy a particular interface, tuner, or encoder appliance. If the station already has an online feed, the job is to route that feed to a suitable encoder; hardware choices depend on the existing setup.

Confirm rights and permissions first

Check three separate issues before sending the feed to YouTube: whether the station may retransmit its broadcast output online, whether its music and programme permissions cover a YouTube live transmission, and whether those permissions also cover an archived copy. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation on Google services and to meet applicable requirements in the stream territory. Indian copyright law also recognizes a broadcasting organisation’s broadcast reproduction right; see the Copyright Act, 1957, Chapter VIII.

Do not assume that a licence for terrestrial broadcasting automatically clears a YouTube simulcast, or that YouTube accepting the stream means its rights are cleared. A rights holder may need to add a channel to its Content ID allowlist even if the station says the material is licensed.

What Indian community-radio guidance establishes—and what it does not

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s revised policy guidelines for setting up Community Radio Stations are dated 13 February 2024. The Ministry states that content broadcast on private FM radio and Community Radio Stations is governed by GOPA guidelines and the AIR Broadcast Code. The official materials cited here do not establish whether those existing permissions alone cover a concurrent YouTube transmission. Ask MIB/WPC or qualified Indian broadcast counsel about the station’s permission and circumstances before treating the simulcast as authorised. Read the revised CRS policy guidelines and consult the Ministry’s Broadcasting Wing information.

MIB also lists implementation guidelines for the “Supporting Community Radio Movement in India” scheme for 2026–31, dated 28 July 2026. Those are scheme guidelines; their listing does not explain YouTube encoder setup or settle online-simulcast permissions. View the scheme guidelines listing.

How to send the station feed to YouTube Live

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  2. Create or schedule the event. Set the title, visibility, and schedule in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not publish or share it with unauthorised people.
  3. Configure the encoder. Choose YouTube as the destination if the encoder offers it. Otherwise, paste the YouTube server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings.
  4. Route the station audio. Select the existing online feed as the encoder’s audio input. The exact steps depend on the feed format and encoder, so verify that the encoder is receiving clean audio before proceeding. If the station instead starts from a console or other audio output, use a compatible input path and check levels to avoid silence or distortion.
  5. Add the visual. Select a station logo, programme slate, or other suitable video source. Check that the image is legible on a phone and that it does not imply live camera coverage if the broadcast is audio-led.
  6. Set audio and connection options. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio. It recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. Choose a bitrate the station’s upload connection can sustain reliably; do not choose settings based only on the connection’s advertised maximum. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
  7. Test and preview. Run a test with audio and video similar to the planned broadcast. Confirm that Live Control Room shows the expected preview, that viewers can reach the event from the channel or watch page, and that playback works on a mobile device. Check sound levels and stream health.
  8. Start the transmission. Start sending from the encoder. For a scheduled workflow, wait for the preview to appear and select Go Live in Live Control Room when required. Keep an operator available to monitor the audio and platform warnings.
  9. End the stream and check the archive. Stop the transmission through Live Control Room and stop sending from the encoder as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check archive settings and rights before relying on a saved copy.

Choose a feed-routing path that fits the station

Path Best suited to Trade-off to plan for
Software routing from the existing online feed to a software encoder A station that already has an accessible online stream and a computer or server able to receive and forward it Audio routing and recovery depend on the feed format, operating system, encoder, and network. Test the complete path, not just the encoder’s connection to YouTube.
Hardware encoder or audio interface from a console or other station output A station whose working signal is available from its production console or another physical output More setup depends on the station’s equipment and signal connections. Monitor the input and the YouTube preview for level, noise, and dropouts.

YouTube documents encoder software and hardware as alternatives, not as a requirement to use a particular named device. An FM tuner is not needed for a workflow that begins with an existing online feed.

Copyright interruptions and what to do

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder, warn the channel, interrupt or terminate the stream, and in some cases issue a copyright strike. Its guidance says a Content ID allowlist may be needed even when the station has a licence. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

  • If the stream is interrupted, check YouTube Studio for the specific warning or strike.
  • Identify the matched segment and resolve the rights issue before restarting or continuing with that material.
  • Where appropriate, ask the relevant rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A licence alone may not prevent an automated match.
  • Recheck permissions for both the live transmission and any archive; they are separate uses to confirm.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Live streaming is unavailable The channel has not completed activation, or this is its first live stream Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio early; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
YouTube receives no signal Incorrect server URL or stream key, encoder not started, or an unstable upload connection Compare the encoder destination with the values in the correct Live Control Room event, restart the encoder if needed, and check the connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
The event preview has no audio The online feed is not selected or routed as the encoder input, or its audio format is not being handled as expected Check the encoder’s audio input and meters, then test playback in the preview before going live.
The audience hears distorted or intermittent sound Input levels are too high, the feed is unstable, or the upload path is struggling Check levels and feed continuity at the encoder; reduce stream demands if the upload cannot sustain them and retest.
Viewers see a blank or unsuitable image No video source is configured or the chosen visual is not being sent Select a slate or other video source and confirm it appears in the Live Control Room preview and on mobile.
YouTube interrupts the stream or displays a rights warning Automated detection of third-party content, including music or another broadcast Review Studio’s notice, address the identified content and permissions, and request rights-holder allowlisting when relevant.
The stream ends but no usable archive appears Archive settings, stream duration, or archive rights may not match expectations Check the event’s archive settings and confirm rights for the saved copy before depending on it. YouTube’s stated automatic archive coverage is for streams under 12 hours.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the station wants a pre-recorded programme or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer or home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than a live camera or the station’s real-time online feed, so it is not a substitute for simulcasting the live FM output described above.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: playback runs in the cloud.
  • Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • StreamNeo attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
