You can stream a looping playlist from a Mumbai VPS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by creating a compatible playlist, pacing the files in real time, encoding to YouTube’s recommended settings, and sending the output to the event’s RTMPS URL and stream key. The Mumbai location alone does not guarantee adequate upload capacity or a stable route: verify the VPS provider’s region and egress limits, then test the instance’s actual outbound connection.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and an event created or selected in YouTube Studio.
- A VPS that is actually located in Mumbai, with sustained outbound capacity and traffic allowance suitable for your stream. Confirm those details with the provider; a listed download speed does not establish upload performance.
- FFmpeg built with the encoder you plan to use. The command below uses
libx264; check your installed build withffmpeg -encoders. - Media files stored on the VPS, with enough disk space and compatible streams if you intend to join them without re-encoding.
YouTube accepts RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the transport. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1, CBR encoding, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers supported settings.
1. Create or select a YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create an event or select the one you intend to use.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS address if the event and your FFmpeg build support it.
- Choose the event’s privacy and latency settings. Lower latency can make audience interaction more immediate, but YouTube notes that it may increase buffering. Pick the setting that fits the broadcast rather than choosing the lowest latency by default. See YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in screenshots, shared logs, or public shell history. If exposed, reset it in the event’s stream settings. YouTube describes the encoder connection setup in its live streaming help.
2. Build the playlist file
For the FFmpeg concat demuxer, create a text file such as /srv/media/playlist.ffconcat:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteffconcat version 1.0
file '/srv/media/clip-01.mp4'
file '/srv/media/clip-02.mp4'
file '/srv/media/clip-03.mp4'
Use absolute paths and make sure the FFmpeg process can read every file. This playlist syntax is suitable for a sequence of files, but stream-copying them cleanly requires compatible stream parameters. Differences in codec, dimensions, frame rate, time base, or audio layout can cause errors or uneven transitions. If the files are not compatible, normalize or re-encode them; FFmpeg’s concat filter is an option when joining inputs requires re-encoding. The FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation explains playlist handling.

The P2 AMD Ryzen 4300U Mini PC is complemented by Gigabit LAN, WiFi and Bluetooth, so nothing stands in the way of a productive working environment.
3. Choose a bitrate and output profile
Set the profile for the event’s intended resolution and frame rate, then confirm the VPS can sustain the resulting upload. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include these examples:
| Output | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not the entire network requirement. Add audio bitrate and protocol overhead when estimating total upload demand. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. Higher resolution and frame rate need more bandwidth; transcoding also needs sufficient VPS CPU. No generic Mumbai VPS plan can be assumed to meet either requirement, so test the specific instance and plan. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.

4. Start a paced, looping FFmpeg stream
This illustrative command starts with a 720p30 H.264 profile. It loops the playlist, reads files at real-time speed, encodes stereo AAC audio, and sends an FLV-muxed stream to YouTube over RTMPS:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/media/playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 6M -maxrate 6M -bufsize 12M
-g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
The command is a starting template, not a tested configuration. Replace the environment-variable values with the exact RTMPS URL and key shown for your event, and verify the URL format against Live Control Room. Avoid placing a real key directly in a command that may be saved in shell history or process logs. Store it in a suitably protected environment or service configuration instead.

-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely;-repaces file reading in real time. FFmpeg documents both options in its command-line documentation.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, approximately two seconds at 30 fps. At 60 fps, use about-g 120for the same interval. Set the output resolution and frame rate explicitly if the playlist does not already have the intended format.-b:vand-maxrateset the video bitrate target and ceiling in this example;-bufsizecontrols the rate-control buffer. The example’s 6 Mbps video rate corresponds to YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p30.- If your FFmpeg build lacks
libx264, choose an encoder available in that build and check its settings against YouTube’s guidance.
Do not use -re on an actual live network input: FFmpeg cautions that imposing a low read rate on a live source can cause packet loss. For a file playlist, real-time pacing is what prevents the files from being sent as fast as the server can read them. Consult FFmpeg’s documentation for input pacing and looping details.
5. Test the stream and confirm it is healthy
- Measure sustained outbound throughput from the VPS itself and check for packet loss or route instability. Make sure measured capacity exceeds the total configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Start with a private or unlisted test event. In Live Control Room, wait for the encoder preview and inspect stream-health messages before treating the setup as ready.
- Confirm moving video and clear audio in the preview, then check playback from another device. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time and monitoring the stream. Its warning is direct: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Watch VPS CPU and network use during the test. If the server cannot maintain real-time encoding or outbound delivery, reduce the output demands or use a VPS plan with verified capacity.
6. Plan for disconnects, process failure, and long broadcasts
A network interruption can break the stream even if FFmpeg is configured correctly. FFmpeg documents recovery behavior for certain temporary output failures through its FIFO muxer, but that is not a guarantee of end-to-end continuity through every failure or YouTube event. Test the behavior with your actual FFmpeg build and event. A process supervisor can restart FFmpeg if the process exits, but you must still verify how YouTube handles a reconnect to the selected event. See the FFmpeg format and muxer documentation.

RTMP or RTMPS?
Use RTMPS when your FFmpeg build and event support it. YouTube recommends the encrypted RTMPS transport; standard RTMP is the alternative if RTMPS is unavailable in your setup. Select the matching URL from the event’s stream settings and do not assume the two endpoints are interchangeable. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube never shows a preview | Incorrect URL or key, unsupported connection, or the encoder did not start. | Recheck the event’s exact RTMPS URL and key, FFmpeg output, and whether the key was reset. Keep the key private. |
| Playlist exits or files fail at a transition | Unreadable path, malformed playlist, or incompatible media streams. | Check file permissions and paths, then verify codecs, dimensions, frame rates, time bases, and audio layouts. Normalize or re-encode incompatible inputs. |
| Stream buffers or health warnings appear | Insufficient sustained upload, packet loss, or unstable routing. | Measure outbound performance from the VPS, allow the recommended 20% headroom over total bitrate, and check the provider’s egress policy. |
| FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder | The installed build does not include libx264. |
Check available encoders with ffmpeg -encoders; use a supported encoder and confirm its output settings against YouTube’s guidance. |
| Video or audio output is inconsistent | Playlist inputs differ in format or the output profile is not explicit. | Normalize or encode the files to a common profile, and explicitly set target resolution, frame rate, audio format, and keyframe interval. |
| FFmpeg stops after a disconnect | Temporary output recovery was not configured or the process exited. | Test the FIFO muxer’s documented recovery behavior for your build and use a process supervisor if the process needs restarting. Verify reconnect behavior with the chosen YouTube event. |
