You can keep an audiobook-style podcast archive playing on YouTube around the clock by sending a continuous feed from an encoder to a YouTube live stream. But do not rely on YouTube to save the entire broadcast: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep an independent recording and publish replayable episodes separately. Before you start, confirm that your rights cover the recordings, underlying works, performances, and music for the territories and live use you intend.
Plan the stream and the archive separately
A 24/7 live feed and a reliable episode archive are different things. The live feed gives listeners one continuous place to tune in; the archive should consist of recordings you control and can publish as separate, searchable videos. YouTube’s live-stream archiving is not a safe sole backup for a day-long broadcast: streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends keeping a local archive.
- Decide whether listeners should hear one uninterrupted channel or distinct, searchable episode replays.
- Choose an encoder that can run unattended and reconnect after a failure. A computer with streaming software is a common starting point; dedicated hardware is optional, not a requirement for an audio-led archive.
- Plan independent recording, storage, monitoring, and recovery. YouTube’s guidance advises checking stream quality and the integrity and growing size of local archive files, but it does not prescribe a storage design or recording interval.
Confirm rights before going live
YouTube’s livestream terms make the content provider responsible for having the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights and other royalty participants. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and check the terms of your own licenses and contracts before streaming.

Permission to distribute a podcast through its usual feed does not by itself establish permission to livestream it on YouTube, in every territory, or for worldwide exploitation. If your authorization is limited by territory, term, platform, or format, make sure your planned broadcast fits those limits.

Create the YouTube live feed
- Create a live stream in YouTube Studio. In the stream setup, obtain YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel.
- Configure your encoder. Enter YouTube’s URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings, select the archive or playlist as the source, and start the encoder. YouTube documents the connection workflow in its encoder setup guidance. The encoder must remain connected and have access to the source material for the feed to continue.
- Check the actual output. Watch the live page and listen on another device. Confirm that playback advances through the intended material, audio is present and intelligible, and the stream remains connected before leaving it unattended.
- Enable DVR if listeners should pause or rewind. YouTube says DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live stream. Verify the control on the actual stream; do not assume that live DVR behaves exactly like navigating an episode in a podcast player. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
YouTube’s Live API distinguishes the viewer-facing broadcast from the incoming stream feed. Its documentation describes using a 24/7 feed while creating a distinct broadcast for an interview that is also part of that continuous feed. This can suit a channel that wants an always-on archive stream and separately bounded events, though it requires additional planning or API workflow management. Record and publish replays independently
Do not treat the live replay as your master archive. YouTube says that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a 24/7 session cannot safely be expected to produce one complete replay. Keep a local recording, check that its file is growing and valid, and maintain enough storage for the recording rate and duration of your own setup. YouTube does not specify a required split schedule, bitrate, file system, or storage capacity for this workflow.

For a browsable library, publish manageable episode or collection videos separately from the continuous stream. If you want distinct live events as well as the continuous feed, the Live API pattern above supports separate broadcasts within a 24/7 feed. Choose the arrangement based on whether listeners need one continuous station, discrete event pages, or both.

Monitor the stream rather than assuming that a successful start means it will remain healthy. Check audio and video output, connection status, and local recording integrity. Design reconnection, restart automation, alerts, encoder failover, and storage around your required uptime and available equipment; YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a specific redundancy architecture.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, and YouTube may warn you to stop streaming the material; leaving it in place can lead to temporary interruption or termination. Licensed content may still require the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. An archived live stream can also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and resolve rights or allowlisting issues before relying on the feed.
Understand monetization separately from copyright permission
Having permission to stream material does not guarantee that a channel or video will qualify for monetization. YouTube applies its channel monetization rules to livestreams. Its July 15, 2025 clarification renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and explains that repetitive or mass-produced material, or reused material without meaningful additions, may not qualify. The reused-content policy considers whether republished material has significant original commentary, substantive changes, or added educational or entertainment value. If monetization matters, make the channel’s original contribution clear rather than assuming that a rights license is enough. Consider whether your selection, narration, context, commentary, or presentation adds genuine value to the archive. Eligibility is subject to YouTube’s review; no particular format guarantees approval.
Choose a way to keep the feed running

For the encoder route, YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance provides platform settings. The cited guidance does not establish a particular encoder model, recording bitrate, storage capacity, or session-splitting interval for an audiobook-style archive, so choose technical settings for your source and verify them in a test stream rather than assuming one configuration fits every setup.
