You can play a YouTube playlist on a Raspberry Pi without downloading its videos: connect the Pi to the internet, open YouTube in a browser, and start the playlist. YouTube streams the video while it plays; the files do not need to be saved on the Pi first.
Play a YouTube playlist in a Raspberry Pi browser
- Connect the Pi and display. Connect the Raspberry Pi to the internet and attach a display using ports and cables compatible with your model. Raspberry Pi’s setup guide lists Chromium and Firefox as browser choices and describes micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cables for connecting some Pi models to a full-size HDMI display: Raspberry Pi getting started documentation.
- Open YouTube. Launch Chromium or Firefox, go to YouTube, and navigate to the playlist you want to watch.
- Start playback from the playlist page. Select a video or use the playlist’s playback controls. The Pi plays the video over the internet; you do not need to download the playlist onto the Pi to watch it online.
- Keep the Pi connected. Online playback needs an internet connection. If playback is poor, check the connection and YouTube playback settings, then try a lower resolution. Smoothness and available quality depend on the Pi model, operating system, browser, display, network, and video format; they are not guaranteed across all setups.
Check the display connection before buying a cable
A micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable is relevant only if your particular Raspberry Pi has a micro-HDMI output and your display accepts full-size HDMI. Check the ports on both devices and any adapters you already own before purchasing a cable. It connects the Pi to the screen; it does not improve the Pi’s YouTube playback performance.
Online playback, casting, and downloads are different
| Approach | Where video plays | Internet needed? | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play YouTube in the Pi browser | The Raspberry Pi browser | Yes | Online playback without saving video files locally |
| Cast from a computer browser | A supported TV or streaming device | Yes | Send playback to a separate receiving device on the same Wi-Fi network |
| YouTube offline downloads | YouTube app on a supported device | Not during offline viewing, after downloading | Watch eligible videos offline under YouTube’s account, availability, browser, and app rules |
Cast to a separate TV or streaming device
YouTube documents casting from a computer browser to a TV or streaming device when both are on the same Wi-Fi network. Some browser-casting features are unavailable; YouTube recommends its app for advanced features. A phone’s YouTube app can also act as a companion and add videos to a receiving TV’s queue while a video plays. These are alternatives when you have a supported receiving device; the cited instructions do not establish that a Raspberry Pi itself is a supported YouTube Cast receiver. See YouTube’s instructions for casting from a computer and YouTube’s casting guidance.

Downloading for offline viewing is separate from streaming a playlist online. YouTube’s help for computer downloads names Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera and describes signing in with a Premium account where the feature is available. The downloads appear in the account’s Downloads area. YouTube’s offline FAQ says features are available in select areas and that “The videos are stored encrypted on the device and can only be watched in the YouTube app.” The documentation does not establish that this feature creates a Raspberry Pi playlist cache. Read YouTube’s computer-download instructions and YouTube’s offline videos FAQ for current availability and restrictions.

YouTube also says you can download your own uploaded videos, but its download feature does not let you download other users’ videos. That is distinct from watching videos online in a browser. See YouTube’s instructions for downloading videos you uploaded.
If playback does not work well
- The video will not start or keeps buffering: Confirm that the Pi is connected to the internet, then reload YouTube and try again. Check playback settings and reduce the resolution if necessary.
- The Pi has no picture on the display: Check that the cable and any adapter match the Pi’s video output and the display’s input. Consult setup guidance for your Pi model rather than assuming every model uses the same connector.
- You expected the playlist to work offline: Browser playback is online streaming. YouTube offline downloads have separate eligibility and app requirements, and the cited documentation does not establish a Raspberry Pi playlist cache.
- You expected a TV or phone to control the Pi as a cast receiver: YouTube’s cited casting instructions cover supported TVs and streaming devices, not the Pi as a receiver. Use YouTube in the Pi’s own browser, or cast to a supported receiving device.
Raspberry Pi’s documentation confirms browser choices and display connections, but does not establish consistent YouTube playback quality for every model, browser, codec, and network. If a particular resolution or smooth playback is essential, verify it with your exact hardware and software rather than relying on a general compatibility promise.
