You can set up and control a Raspberry Pi without attaching a monitor, keyboard, or mouse: install Raspberry Pi OS Lite with remote access configured, connect to the Pi over your network, and use a player such as mpv with the actual YouTube playlist URL. To watch the video, however, connect the Pi’s HDMI output to a TV or other playback display. “Headless” means no local peripherals are needed for setup and administration—not that video appears without a screen.
What you need—and what “without a monitor” means
A headless Raspberry Pi operates without a monitor, keyboard, or mouse for setup and administration. You still need network access to connect to it remotely. If the playlist is meant to appear on a TV, you also need a physical video connection from the Pi to that TV.
- A Raspberry Pi with a power supply and network connection.
- A second computer on the same network for remote administration, or Raspberry Pi Connect.
- A TV or other display connected to the Pi for playback, plus a cable compatible with your Pi model.
- A YouTube playlist that the Pi can access, and a playback setup compatible with your Raspberry Pi OS release.
Set up Raspberry Pi OS for headless access
Configure the operating system in Raspberry Pi Imager
- On another computer, open Raspberry Pi Imager and select your Raspberry Pi model and Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi OS Lite for a headless installation.
- In Imager’s customisation settings, configure the network connection and enable remote access. Choose SSH if you plan to administer the Pi from a terminal; configure Raspberry Pi Connect if you prefer that remote-access route.
- Write the operating system to the Pi’s storage card, insert it into the Pi, and power the Pi on with network access available.
SSH is disabled by default on Raspberry Pi OS unless you enable it during imaging or afterward. If you skip that setting, an SSH connection will not work until you enable SSH through another available setup path.
Connect to the Pi remotely
From a computer on the same network, use SSH with the Pi’s network name or IP address and the account credentials you configured. Raspberry Pi Connect is an alternative remote-access path. Once connected, you can administer the Pi without attaching local input devices or a setup monitor.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
The precise connection details depend on the network and account configuration. If the Pi does not appear on the network, first check that it has power and network access, then confirm that you enabled the remote-access method you are trying to use.
Connect the playback display
Connect the Pi’s HDMI output to the TV or display that should show the playlist, then select that HDMI input on the TV. Connector type varies by board: Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 5 use micro-HDMI, while Raspberry Pi Zero models use mini-HDMI. Check the exact model before choosing a cable. Raspberry Pi models with HDMI support HDMI audio.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 16GB with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (16GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
This cable is for playback output, not for headless administration. The Pi can be managed remotely even when no setup monitor is attached, but a display must be connected if you want to see the video.

mpv’s FAQ documents passing a YouTube playlist URL directly to mpv. Use the playlist URL itself, in the form https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAYLIST_ID. Do not substitute an individual video URL that merely has playlist-related parameters attached; that may identify a video rather than the playlist you intend to play.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
After you have installed and configured an mpv setup compatible with your Raspberry Pi OS release, run mpv from the Pi’s remote terminal with the playlist URL as its argument. For example, the command pattern is mpv 'https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAYLIST_ID'; replace PLAYLIST_ID with the ID from your playlist’s URL. This illustrates the documented URL form, not a guaranteed install-and-play recipe for every Pi model or OS release.
Package names, YouTube extraction dependencies, and compatibility can change. The available documentation establishes mpv’s playlist-URL behavior but does not establish one universal installation command or dependency set for current Raspberry Pi OS versions. Check the instructions for your specific OS release and mpv setup before relying on a command sequence.

mpv and VLC are not interchangeable evidence
| Player | What is established | What that means here |
|---|---|---|
| mpv | Its FAQ says a YouTube playlist URL can be passed directly. | It is the player documented here for the playlist-URL approach; compatibility still depends on the current OS and player setup. |
| VLC | Raspberry Pi OS documentation says VLC is included and uses hardware acceleration for supported media, with command-line playback support. | That supports local-media playback, but does not establish direct YouTube playlist support. Do not assume VLC will play this playlist based on its local-media features. |
Troubleshoot common problems
You cannot connect to the Pi
- SSH connection fails: SSH may still be disabled. Enable it during imaging or through another available setup path before trying SSH again.
- The Pi cannot be found: Confirm it is powered on and connected to the network, then try the Pi’s network name or IP address. Raspberry Pi Connect is another documented remote-access option.
The command does not open the playlist
- A video opens instead of the playlist: Check that you passed the playlist URL itself, using the
youtube.com/playlist?list=...form, rather than an individual video URL with playlist parameters. - mpv reports an extraction or playback error: YouTube behavior and third-party player compatibility can change. Check that the playlist is accessible to the account or viewer context being used and verify the current mpv setup and any required companion tools for your OS release.
- Only some items play: Check whether the playlist contains unavailable, private, or otherwise inaccessible videos. Playback of every item cannot be assumed merely because the playlist URL is valid.
The TV shows no picture or sound
- No picture: Confirm that the cable matches the Pi’s connector, is firmly connected, and that the TV is set to the corresponding HDMI input.
- No sound: Confirm that the display or TV is receiving HDMI audio and check its volume and audio-input settings. HDMI audio support is available on Raspberry Pi models with HDMI, but the connected display and its settings also matter.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube live stream from uploaded recordings rather than watching a playlist on a TV through the Pi, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo does not play a playlist onto a TV from a Raspberry Pi, and it does not go live from a camera.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStreamNeo streams uploaded video to YouTube at the quality it was made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
