You can’t turn a YouTube playlist into a live broadcast with the playlist’s loop button. To make a continuous live channel, you need to play authorized speedrun VODs in sequence and send that playback to a YouTube Live event through an encoder—or use a cloud service that does this for uploaded videos. YouTube’s own setup uses a stream created in Studio plus an encoder configured with the stream URL and stream key.

What “continuous live channel” means

YouTube’s playlist loop control repeats videos for ordinary playback; it does not create a live broadcast. A live channel instead sends a continuous video feed to a live event. The signal path is:

  1. Select and sequence VODs you have permission to rebroadcast.
  2. Play them in order through a playback setup that can feed an encoder.
  3. Configure the encoder with the YouTube Live server URL and stream key, then send its output to the live event.

YouTube’s help pages explain how to create a live stream and send an encoder feed, but do not identify a supported tool that automatically turns a YouTube playlist into an encoder feed. Before depending on any third-party automation, check its current documentation, YouTube compatibility, and platform terms. In particular, verify how it handles playlist order, unavailable or private videos, interruptions, monitoring, recovery, and rights.

Check eligibility and rights before building the channel

Confirm that your channel can go live

YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before investing time in a continuous setup; a restriction can prevent the planned broadcast.

Clear every VOD and its included material

YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights. Live content must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube separately prohibits playlists that violate those guidelines; a collection can be a problem even when its videos are considered together.

A speedrun recording may include game footage, music, overlays, commentary, or other third-party material. A video being public or already present in a playlist does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Check the rights and applicable terms for every recording and its audio or visual elements, including the territories in which your stream may be available.

Set up the YouTube Live event and encoder

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create a stream. Go to Live Control Room and create or schedule the live event. Choose its privacy and other event settings deliberately.
  2. Choose the encoder route. YouTube lists encoder streaming alongside mobile and webcam methods. Its guidance describes encoders as commonly used for gameplay; software encoders are supported as an option. Hardware encoders are an option for higher-production events, not a stated requirement for this VOD use case.
  3. Configure the encoder credentials. Copy the server or stream URL and stream key shown for the event into the encoder. The key is the credential that allows YouTube to accept the feed, so keep it private. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Studio before continuing.
  4. Feed the VOD sequence to the encoder. Configure your playback and encoding setup to present the authorized recordings in the intended order. The exact playlist automation step depends on the tool you choose; YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not specify a YouTube-playlist-to-encoder automation feature.
  5. Review the event settings. YouTube offers controls including privacy, DVR, auto-start, and auto-stop. DVR lets viewers pause and resume the live event. Decide whether each option fits your presentation and channel rather than assuming the defaults suit an always-on feed.
  6. Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. Confirm that video and audio are arriving correctly before making the event public or telling viewers it is live.
  7. Monitor the live event. Watch stream health and the actual watch experience. When you are ready to end the broadcast, stop the feed and end the live event in Studio as appropriate.

Choose settings and test reliability

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for protocol, codec, frame rate, and bitrate. Choose settings your actual upload connection can sustain; a high-quality preset is not useful if the connection cannot deliver it consistently.

  • Leave bandwidth headroom: YouTube recommends upload capacity 20% above the total stream bitrate. Count the whole outgoing feed, not just one video stream.
  • Test before launch: Send a test feed and check stream health, audio, image quality, and playback continuity.
  • Check more than the encoder preview: YouTube recommends checking the preview, watch or channel pages, and a mobile view so you can catch issues that are not obvious in the encoder.
  • Plan for interruptions: Test what happens if a source video becomes unavailable or the connection drops. The reviewed YouTube setup guidance does not establish that a playlist automation tool will resume a sequence or recover a broadcast automatically.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive behavior for streams within that duration, not a guarantee of indefinite channel uptime or an assurance that a longer continuous event will be archived.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely check What to do
The playlist repeats for viewers, but there is no live event Playlist looping is playback behavior, not a live encoder feed. Create a live event in Studio and send it an encoder feed made from the VOD sequence.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Check that the encoder has the URL and stream key for the correct event and that the key has not been changed or exposed. Copy the event’s current credentials from Live Control Room; keep the key private.
The stream preview is unstable or poor quality The selected bitrate may exceed sustainable upload capacity, or the connection may lack headroom. Use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and keep the recommended 20% upload headroom over total stream bitrate; test again.
A video or audio element creates a rights concern Public availability and playlist membership do not prove rebroadcast rights. Confirm permissions and applicable terms for the VOD and all included material before streaming.
The broadcast ends or fails to resume when playback is interrupted The behavior depends on the playback/automation and encoding setup; it is not established by YouTube’s general encoder instructions. Test interruption and recovery behavior with the specific tool and consult its current documentation before relying on it for a continuous channel.
