You can stream a playlist whose videos have different resolutions by choosing one stable live-output format and normalizing each authorized source video to it before or as it reaches the encoder. The live encoder sends one consistent stream to YouTube; YouTube then prepares viewer playback formats. On Azure, the practical limits are the VM’s available outbound bandwidth, the encoder’s ability to process the files in real time, and the stream settings you choose.
How mixed-resolution playlists work
A playlist can contain, for example, 720p and 1080p files without changing the live stream’s output resolution every time playback advances. Instead, select a single output canvas—such as 1920 × 1080—and scale or pad each source to fit it. Keep frame rate, pixel format, audio format, and pacing consistent across transitions. This normalization is an implementation recommendation; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not prescribe a playlist tool or a particular FFmpeg command.
YouTube Live recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default and transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers. The resolution you configure is therefore the encoder’s ingest format, not a promise that every viewer receives that resolution. A custom stream key in Live Control Room allows manual resolution selection. YouTube’s live encoder settings describe the available options.

Confirm rights and source access
Use files you own or are authorized to rebroadcast, and make sure they are available to the VM. A playlist URL is not itself permission to retransmit its contents. The guidance here does not establish an officially supported way to download or extract YouTube playlist media, nor does it endorse a particular downloader. Choose how to handle resolution differences
- Normalize during playback: Decode each item and scale or pad it to the chosen canvas as it plays. This avoids preparing a second copy of every file, but real-time performance depends on the VM’s CPU or GPU capacity and the encoder’s workload.
- Pre-render the playlist: Prepare the files or a continuous output in advance using consistent dimensions and audio settings. This makes transitions and output characteristics more predictable, at the cost of preparation time and storage.
These are engineering trade-offs, not performance results for a particular Azure size or software version. Validate the workflow with authorized sample files and the FFmpeg version you actually install. The cited official guidance does not validate exact playlist sequencing or filter syntax.
Set one YouTube output format
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or select the stream and copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in logs that others can access.
- Choose the output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that the VM can sustain. YouTube recommends automatic resolution detection as the default; if you select a manual resolution, use the matching custom stream-key setting in Live Control Room.
- Configure the encoder for a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s listed encoder settings say not to exceed four seconds between keyframes.
- Use RTMPS for a general live stream. YouTube describes it as a secure extension of RTMP and recommends it for Live. HLS is an alternative for HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP; it has higher latency and additional segment and playlist requirements, so mixed source resolutions alone are not a reason to choose it.
YouTube’s English encoder-settings page lists these H.264 ingest recommendations: 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations for ingest, not measurements of the capacity of your VM or its internet route. Check the current guidance for codec-specific options, including conditions for H.265, AV1, and HDR.

Check Azure bandwidth and leave headroom
Azure outbound bandwidth varies by VM size. Microsoft documents the outbound allocation as a per-VM limit aggregated across attached network interfaces; outbound traffic to all destinations counts toward it. Accelerated networking can help a VM approach its allocation, but does not raise the allocation ceiling. The allocation is guidance, not a guarantee of end-to-end throughput. See Microsoft Learn’s TCP/IP performance guidance for Azure VMs and confirm the limits for your specific VM size.

- Check the expected outbound bandwidth for the exact VM size and configuration you plan to use.
- Measure upload performance from the deployed VM and network path, rather than relying only on the published allocation.
- Account for other outbound traffic, since Azure aggregates it with the live stream against the VM’s allocation.
- Keep at least the headroom YouTube recommends: its streaming tips call for 20% beyond the stream’s bitrate requirement. For example, a 10 Mbps stream calls for about 12 Mbps of available upload bandwidth under that recommendation.
A stream can still falter even when a nominal VM allocation looks sufficient: actual throughput can vary, and encoding may also compete for CPU or GPU resources. Test using representative motion and audio, then watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the broadcast.

Normalize and play the playlist
- Inspect the source files. Note each file’s dimensions, frame rate, video codec, audio streams, and duration. This helps identify sources that need scaling, frame-rate conversion, or audio handling.
- Pick a target canvas and frame rate. Choose a single format that matches your planned YouTube ingest settings and the VM’s tested capacity. Avoid switching the outgoing format between playlist items.
- Prepare each item for that output. Scale or pad sources to the target dimensions, use consistent frame-rate and pixel-format handling, and ensure audio settings remain compatible at transitions. Preserve aspect ratio when fitting a source to the canvas; stretching can distort the picture.
- Sequence the authorized files. Use a playlist or a pre-rendered continuous output, and verify that playback advances as intended. Exact sequencing commands and filter syntax depend on the installed software and were not established by the cited YouTube and Azure documentation.
- Run a preflight stream. Test with representative content, including transitions between files of different sizes and frame rates. Confirm audio continuity, output format, upload headroom, and YouTube stream health before relying on the setup.
Troubleshoot common failures
