You can keep a YouTube channel live around the clock by continuously feeding YouTube Live from a source and encoder: prepare a rights-cleared program, have a computer encoder or dedicated hardware play and transmit it, and monitor the stream for interruptions. YouTube accepts 24/7 feeds, but it does not automatically turn a playlist into a continuous broadcast or guarantee uninterrupted operation. For a theater lobby or community venue, clear public-display and music rights before going live.
How a 24/7 YouTube channel works
The system has three parts: a source plays the approved program, an encoder converts and sends that program to YouTube Live, and YouTube’s player delivers it to viewers. YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. In a prerecorded setup, keeping the sequence going is the responsibility of the source and encoder—not an automatic YouTube playlist feature.
YouTube’s API documentation describes a 24/7 feed and explains how a separate broadcast can share a live stream with an ongoing broadcast. That is broadcast-management functionality, not a turnkey looping guide. Treat continuity as an operational requirement: the source, encoder, network, power, and monitoring plan all matter.

Clear the rights before building the program
Confirm that you are allowed to transmit every film, clip, image, track, graphic, and other asset on YouTube and display it in the venue. The relevant permissions may differ by work, venue, territory, and type of use; the rights holder or qualified counsel can advise on the specific licenses required.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, and a copyright strike can also end it. YouTube says that if you have licensed third-party material, ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone does not guarantee the automated scan will leave the stream uninterrupted. Venue playback raises a separate issue from YouTube’s technical acceptance of a signal. YouTube’s Terms of Service describe public screening of videos and streaming music as examples outside personal, non-commercial viewing or listening. In the United States, Title 17 defines public performance to include certain transmissions to the public; see the U.S. Copyright Office’s text of 17 U.S.C. § 101. Do not assume an unlisted stream, an embedded player, ownership of a disc or file, or a consumer subscription supplies the necessary venue rights.
Choose a source and encoder approach
YouTube supports encoder software on a computer and standalone hardware encoders. In either case, the source must play the approved sequence and continue providing video and audio. Check the chosen software or hardware documentation for its playback or input method, supported codecs, RTMPS support, restart behavior, and suitability for continuous operation. YouTube’s verified-encoder listings are not an endorsement or proof that a particular product is suitable for 24/7 prerecorded programming.

Compare total setup and operating costs, who will monitor and restart the system, backup internet or power arrangements, and the vendor’s documented duty cycle. The official YouTube guidance establishes these broad encoder categories but does not verify a specific model for continuous prerecorded playback.
Set up the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio: select Create → Go Live, then use the Stream tab to create or configure the broadcast. YouTube’s workflow and labels can change, so follow the current controls shown in your account.
- Copy the connection details: copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the matching server and key fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: restrict access and do not publish it.
- Prefer RTMPS when supported: select the RTMPS server URL supplied in Live Control Room. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL and protects the encoder-to-YouTube connection; it does not grant content rights or guarantee uptime.
- Configure and test auto-start or auto-stop only if needed: these stream settings affect the broadcast workflow, but they cannot keep an offline source producing video.
- For a scheduled broadcast, inspect the preview: when Live Control Room requires it, click Go live at the planned time after checking the preview. Confirm the stream is actually reaching YouTube rather than assuming that starting the source completes the scheduled go-live flow.
- Protect or replace a compromised key: reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. Avoid sharing access with people who do not need to manage the broadcast.

Choose a sustainable video and network profile
Start with a format your upload connection can sustain, then test it using content with similar movement and audio to the planned program. YouTube recommends reliable encoder settings for the available internet connection and monitoring stream health. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube recommends an encoder ingest bitrate of 5 Mbps. That is the video bitrate sent to YouTube—not the total internet speed to provision. Leave network headroom for other venue traffic and instability; consult YouTube’s current bitrate table for other resolutions and frame rates rather than extrapolating from this figure.

See YouTube’s recommended encoder settings for the selected format. Match the source, encoder, and network to a tested profile; raising resolution or frame rate without testing can make delivery less reliable.

Rehearse the complete venue workflow
- Run an unlisted rehearsal: test the actual source, encoder, network path, and scheduled or immediate go-live flow before announcing the channel.
- Check real viewing devices: verify that the YouTube watch page works on the lobby display and a phone, and assess picture and audio from the audience’s perspective.
- Watch the source transition: confirm each item ends cleanly and the next begins as intended, with no dead air, unintended black screen, or audio gap.
- Test failures deliberately: check how the setup responds to a brief network interruption, a missing or unreadable source file, and a power restart. Where backup failover is used, test it rather than assuming it will take over.
- Assign ongoing responsibility: designate someone to check stream health, source progression, physical lobby playback, and YouTube notices. Keep channel-manager and licensor contact details accessible.
YouTube recommends testing beforehand, reviewing the Live Control Room preview, confirming access from channel or watch pages and mobile, monitoring audio and video, and testing backup failover where applicable. Do not treat one uninterrupted broadcast as a guaranteed full-day recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not promise a complete archive for a stream lasting longer than 12 hours, and it does not establish a required restart interval for a 24/7 feed. If recordings matter, plan and verify a separate local recording and archive workflow.

YouTube’s API documentation gives an example of an ongoing 24/7 broadcast sharing a live stream with a second broadcast for a separately titled event. This can be useful for a venue that runs a continuous channel plus occasional events, but the API example is not a consumer-facing looping setup. Build recovery around the actual failure modes: source, encoder, internet, power, and rights-related interruptions.

Do-it-yourself: computer or hardware encoder
A local setup gives the venue control over its source and equipment, but the computer or appliance, playback source, power, and internet connection must remain available. Assign an operator, test restart and network-recovery behavior, and maintain a separate archive plan if recordings are important. Choose hardware only after verifying its documentation for the intended inputs, protocols, and continuous operation.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: verify the server URL, stream key, encoder connection status, and outbound network access. If the key was reset, replace the old key in the encoder.
- The stream starts but viewers see no program: check that the source is playing, that the encoder is receiving it, and that the Live Control Room preview shows the expected picture and audio.
- The scheduled stream is not public: check the scheduled broadcast in Live Control Room and complete its required Go live step; a running source alone may not finish the scheduled workflow.
- The feed is interrupted during a licensed program: check YouTube’s warning and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. A license does not itself ensure that automated detection will not interrupt a live stream.
- Playback stops after an outage or power loss: inspect the source, encoder restart behavior, and network recovery. Rehearse these failure cases and define who is responsible for bringing the feed back.
- The stream has no complete archive: the automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; use an explicit recording workflow if longer coverage is required.
