You can use a Winamp playlist as the audio source for a YouTube live stream, but Winamp alone is not enough: an encoder must send YouTube both audio and video. For a continuous broadcast, the playlist, encoder, computer, power and internet connection all need to keep working—and you need permission to stream every track. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt a broadcast even when you have a license if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel.
What you need for a 24/7 Winamp radio stream
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- A Winamp playlist containing audio you are permitted to rebroadcast on YouTube.
- A software or hardware encoder that can send video and audio to YouTube. An audio playlist needs a video signal too; a static or animated visual is one possible choice, provided you have rights to use it.
- A way to route Winamp’s audio into the encoder. The supported capture or input method depends on your operating system and encoder, so there is no universal click-by-click route.
- A computer or encoder that can remain on, plus reliable power and internet access. A local setup stops sending if the player or encoder closes, the computer loses power, or the connection fails.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from its live settings. The encoder sends the broadcast; Winamp supplies the playlist audio.
Check music and visual rights before going live
Having access to a song in Winamp, a radio playlist, or an online stream does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it on YouTube. Check the rights for each recording and composition, and confirm that the permission covers live streaming, YouTube, your intended territories, and the planned duration. Check the visual too, including any artwork, video, or on-screen material.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may show a warning or placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. YouTube also warns that licensed music may still be interrupted if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. If the rights owner uses Content ID, ask how to have your channel allowlisted before broadcasting.

Winamp describes licenses for music use in online video projects, but that general description does not establish that a particular playlist is cleared for your channel or territory. Winamp for Creators’ royalty-collection and Content ID services likewise do not grant blanket permission to rebroadcast unrelated tracks. Its published Content ID submission criteria apply to that service and exclude categories including covers, medleys, samples or remixes, public-domain recordings, certain previously enrolled tracks, podcasts, and live performances; these are not a complete statement of YouTube’s Content ID rules.
Set up Winamp audio as a YouTube live stream
- Confirm the rights first. Make a track list and verify permission for every recording and composition. If applicable, arrange channel allowlisting with the rights holder before testing the broadcast.
- Enable live streaming on YouTube. Complete YouTube’s live activation. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the planned launch time.
- Choose and configure an encoder. Use software or hardware that can send an audio-and-video broadcast. Create a video source as well as an audio source; for example, you could use a still visual if you have rights to it. Exact menus and audio-capture steps depend on the encoder and operating system.
- Route Winamp’s playback into the encoder. Use an audio input or capture method supported by your operating system and encoder. Verify that the encoder’s audio meter responds while Winamp plays, and listen to a private or unlisted test if your setup allows it. Do not assume that selecting a microphone will capture Winamp output.
- Copy YouTube’s connection details into the encoder. In YouTube’s live setup, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not broadcast to your channel.
- Start sending and verify the result. Start the encoder, then check YouTube’s live dashboard for an incoming signal, audible playlist audio, visible video, and any warnings. Start the broadcast through the encoder or YouTube workflow your setup uses.
- Monitor the ongoing broadcast. Keep Winamp and the encoder running, check the live dashboard for interruptions or copyright notices, and investigate any warning rather than assuming a license prevents automated matching.
Plan for continuity and YouTube archives
A 24/7 goal is not an uptime guarantee. With a local computer, Winamp and the encoder must stay open, and the machine must have power and network access. A computer restart, software crash, or internet outage can interrupt the broadcast. If continuous operation matters, plan how you will detect an interruption and restart the player and encoder, and test that recovery process before relying on it.

YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is about archive behavior, not a promise that a broadcast can run forever; do not assume a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived in the same way. If an archive matters, plan the session and recording approach around YouTube’s current guidance rather than treating a continuous live session as a permanent recording.
Local encoder or cloud playback?
A local computer or hardware encoder gives you control over the playback and production, but the equipment and connection have to remain available. YouTube supports encoder-based broadcasting; its documentation does not establish a required mini PC, minimum specification, or best model. A dedicated machine is an optional way to separate the broadcast from your everyday computer, not a guarantee against power, network, or software failures.
