You can use NGINX as part of a relay for a Telugu devotional playlist, but only if your chosen NGINX RTMP module build can publish securely to YouTube over RTMPS. YouTube’s current ingest details come from YouTube Studio or its LiveStreams API. The available documentation does not establish a tested, copy-ready NGINX configuration for a specific module build, so confirm that build’s TLS publishing support before relying on it. The steps below show how to plan and verify the workflow without treating plain RTMP as a secure substitute.

What the setup does—and what NGINX does not do by itself

A playlist-to-YouTube relay has three parts: cleared recordings and visuals, a process that plays those files as a continuous programme, and an ingest path that delivers the programme to YouTube. In the proposed setup, NGINX with the separate nginx-rtmp-module project is the relay. It is not the playlist itself, and NGINX’s built-in HTTP HLS module is not the RTMP relay module.

Google for Developers defines RTMPS as a regular RTMP video stream tunneled through SSL/TLS. YouTube’s RTMPS ingest requires a valid RTMPS URL and application path, a connection to port 443, and SNI set to the server hostname. YouTube’s LiveStreams API can provide primary and backup ingestion addresses as well as stream health and configuration status. Use the values YouTube currently gives your broadcast; do not copy an endpoint from an old tutorial.

The crucial implementation check is whether the exact NGINX RTMP module build you intend to run can publish to YouTube using TLS with the required SNI behavior. The project’s identity as an NGINX-based media streaming server does not, by itself, establish that capability or its configuration syntax. If the build cannot publish over RTMPS, select a compatible encoder or relay path. Sending ordinary, unencrypted RTMP to a legacy endpoint is not equivalent to RTMPS.

Prepare the playlist and clear its rights

Check every recording, performance and visual

Before building the playlist, confirm that you have permission for the actual sound recordings, musical performances or arrangements, and visuals you plan to broadcast. A devotional subject, a traditional composition, a file you possess, or a song available online does not establish that the recording and other elements are cleared for live streaming. Confirm that the permission covers the relevant territories and the intended YouTube use.

If you plan to leave the live replay available, check whether your rights also cover that archive. YouTube says archived live streams can receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends. Keep permission records somewhere accessible to the person monitoring the channel.

Plan the programme, not just the files

Put the cleared recordings and visuals in the intended order, and confirm the playlist can advance without someone manually starting each item. Decide what viewers should see between tracks and what should happen if playback or the relay stops. A long-running broadcast needs an operator who can monitor the source process, relay host, network, playlist progression, YouTube stream health and rights notices.

Set up a YouTube broadcast and retrieve its ingest details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enable or schedule the intended live broadcast. Use the live control settings for that broadcast, or the ingestion information for an API-managed setup. A scheduled event and its stream connection are related, but make sure you are using the URL and key for the intended event.
  2. Copy the current ingest URL and stream key from YouTube. YouTube’s API may expose primary and backup ingestion addresses. Treat the endpoint and key as broadcast-specific values when Studio or the API presents them that way; do not assume an older tutorial’s values still apply.
  3. Protect the stream key. Keep it out of public configuration examples, screenshots, shared repositories and logs. Restrict access to the host and files that need it. If the key is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s current controls before continuing.
  4. Record the endpoint requirements alongside the configuration. For RTMPS, verify the YouTube hostname, application path, port 443, TLS connection and hostname-based SNI. Do not silently substitute an RTMP URL or omit SNI.

Build and verify the NGINX RTMP relay

Choose a host that can stay available

You can run the relay on an existing Linux machine, on local always-on hardware such as a mini PC, or on a hosted Linux VPS. Compare whether the host can run your chosen module and TLS implementation, whether its outbound network capacity and transfer costs fit the broadcast, where it is located relative to your audience and data center needs, and how you will monitor or recover it. A VPS avoids buying a local server; local hardware gives you direct control. Neither option guarantees uninterrupted service.

Confirm RTMPS publishing support before writing the configuration

Install an NGINX RTMP module build only after checking its current documentation and build capabilities for outbound RTMPS publishing, certificate validation, port 443 and SNI. The arut/nginx-rtmp-module project is separate from NGINX’s built-in ngx_http_hls_module. The latter is documented by NGINX as HTTP Live Streaming support for MP4/MOV media files, with H.264 video and AAC/MP3 audio support; it does not establish RTMP ingest or RTMPS push capability.

There is no verified, build-specific configuration syntax established here, so do not paste a generic push directive or assume that a module supports a TLS URL merely because it accepts RTMP. Validate the chosen build’s own documentation and test it against a private or otherwise suitable YouTube broadcast before using it for a public continuous stream. If the exact build cannot meet YouTube’s RTMPS requirements, use a compatible encoder/relay instead of downgrading to plain RTMP.

Connect the playlist source, relay and YouTube ingest

  1. Start the playlist player or encoder. It must read the cleared recordings and create a continuous live programme for the relay. The playlist source is distinct from NGINX; confirm its playback and repeat behavior independently.
  2. Send the source to your NGINX RTMP relay. Configure this using the syntax documented for your installed module build. Keep the stream key and other credentials private, and confirm the relay receives the source before troubleshooting YouTube.
  3. Publish from the relay to the current YouTube RTMPS ingest endpoint. Use TLS to port 443 and the correct SNI hostname, along with the current URL and key from Studio or the API. Do not treat an unencrypted RTMP push as an equivalent fallback.
  4. Check YouTube Studio or API status before opening to viewers. Inspect stream health and configuration feedback, resolve reported issues, and confirm that the intended broadcast is receiving the feed.
  5. Test the full playlist cycle. Observe track transitions, playlist progression, audio/video continuity and the relay’s behavior when the source ends or reconnects. A successful initial connection alone does not establish that a long-running playlist will recover correctly.

Do not guess encoder numbers

Resolution, bitrate, frame rate, audio settings and keyframe interval depend on the encoder and YouTube’s current requirements for the selected stream. The documented material here does not establish numeric settings for your source, module build or broadcast, so no bitrate or keyframe values are prescribed. Use the current guidance surfaced by YouTube Studio or the encoder you select, and verify the resulting health status rather than relying on values copied from an unrelated setup.

Monitor a continuous broadcast and recover from interruptions

“24/7” describes the intended schedule, not a guarantee that the stream cannot stop. For an all-day broadcast, monitor the host process, source playback, network, relay connection and YouTube stream health. Decide in advance who can restart each part and how you will detect a stalled playlist or a lost ingest connection. YouTube provides health and configuration status through Studio or its LiveStreams API, and may provide a backup ingest address; follow the controls and status information available for your broadcast.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party-content matches. YouTube Help says that a placeholder may replace a live stream when a match is identified; the streamer may be warned to stop using the content, and a stream can be interrupted or terminated if the content remains. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a stream. If you have a license, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Permission alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted, including when rights are limited to certain territories.

Troubleshoot the most common failure points

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not receive the relay feed Wrong or stale ingest URL/key, wrong event, or a source that never reaches the relay. Confirm the active broadcast’s current URL and key in Studio or API; check source-to-relay input separately from relay-to-YouTube output.
RTMPS connection fails although the endpoint looks correct The module build may not support TLS publishing, port 443, certificate handling or SNI as required. Verify the exact build’s documentation and connection behavior. Use a compatible encoder or relay if it cannot satisfy YouTube’s RTMPS requirements; do not substitute plain RTMP.
The module accepts the configuration but YouTube reports a connection or configuration issue Incorrect hostname, application path, SNI, endpoint or stream key; or a setting incompatible with the chosen encoder. Compare the configuration with the current ingest details and requirements shown for the broadcast, then use Studio/API health feedback to narrow the fault.
The broadcast starts but stops later Playlist completion or stall, source or relay process exit, host/network loss, or YouTube interruption. Check each layer’s status and logs without exposing the key; verify playlist progression and the recovery plan, then inspect YouTube health and notices.
You have permission but the live feed is interrupted for a match YouTube’s live content scanning can identify third-party material; a license may not prevent interruption without channel allowlisting. Contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting for your channel and territories, and respond to YouTube’s notice in Studio.
A claim appears after the live ends An archived live stream may receive a Content ID claim after completion. Review the claim and your permissions for both live transmission and the archive; do not assume a clean live session means the replay is cleared.
