You can run a 24/7 Sikh kirtan radio-style stream on YouTube by sending a continuous program feed through an encoder. For a prerecorded rotation with a static image, that feed can be as simple as a playlist and a software encoder; live performers or a physical mixer call for suitable audio inputs. Before going live, verify the channel, secure rights to every musical work and recording, and test the full setup in YouTube’s Live Control Room.

Choose how the station will produce its audio

The right setup depends on whether the station plays prerecorded material or captures a live source. YouTube supports both software and standalone hardware encoders; hardware is an option, not a requirement. YouTube’s encoder guide explains how an encoder connects to a live stream.

Station format What the feed needs Equipment implications
Prerecorded kirtan rotation with a static visual A continuous audio program and a visual signal sent through an encoder A software encoder may be sufficient. A microphone, mixer, or audio interface is not automatically necessary.
Live performers or a physical mixer feed Audio from the performance or mixer, plus a visual signal Use an encoder workflow with compatible external audio inputs. A USB audio interface or mixer may be appropriate for the actual source.

For either format, check the chosen encoder’s supported inputs and its suitability for continuous operation. The YouTube documentation identifies encoder categories but does not establish that a particular setup will be reliable around the clock or provide a universal bitrate, codec, or failover design.

Prepare the channel and rights before launch

Meet YouTube’s livestreaming prerequisites

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling livestreaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete this step well before the planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Clear both the music and the recordings

A devotional or religious subject does not by itself make a commercial recording free to rebroadcast. Confirm that the station has the necessary rights for the underlying musical works and for each particular sound recording in its rotation. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights, including music rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Applicable requirements also depend on the operator’s jurisdiction; this guide cannot determine which local licenses apply to a particular station.

Account for Content ID claims

YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content. A match may replace the stream with a placeholder and can lead to interruption or termination. If the station has a license, that alone may not prevent an interruption: the rights owner may also need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and confirm the relevant permissions and allowlisting with the rights owner before relying on a recording.

Connect an encoder to YouTube Live

  1. Enable livestreaming. In the intended channel, complete verification and check for restrictions. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  2. Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube Studio’s live-stream creation workflow and select the encoder option. YouTube provides the stream URL and stream key for the connection.
  3. Configure the feed in the encoder. Enter the URL and key supplied for that stream, then select the program audio and visual source. Keep the stream key private: it is the credential that lets an encoder connect to the stream.
  4. Start a test transmission. Check the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room before depending on the setup. Listen for clean, continuous audio and check that the visual is present; monitor both during operation, as YouTube recommends.
  5. Launch only after rights and monitoring are in place. Confirm that the recordings are cleared, any necessary Content ID allowlisting is handled, and someone can respond to a failed or interrupted stream.

The available YouTube documentation does not establish a single bitrate, codec, or keyframe setting suitable for every source, encoder, and connection. Use the settings supported by the encoder and YouTube’s current guidance for the selected stream, then validate them with a test; do not guess a value based on a different production setup.

Plan session transitions and archives

An always-on station must account for what happens when a live session ends or needs to be restarted. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one session running 12 hours or longer will produce one complete archive. Decide in advance whether archives matter, how the station will handle session transitions, and who will check that the next session is live. The cited YouTube guidance does not prescribe a restart cadence for a 24/7 station.

Troubleshoot common launch and playback problems

Symptom What to check Practical response
Livestreaming is unavailable Whether the channel is verified, has a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, or is still within first-time activation. Complete verification, resolve any restriction, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
The encoder does not connect The stream URL and key entered in the encoder, and whether they belong to the intended YouTube live stream. Copy the connection details from YouTube Studio again. Treat the key as private and do not publish it.
The preview has no audio or the wrong visual The selected program source and the Live Control Room preview. Correct the encoder’s input selection and test again before relying on the station.
A stream is interrupted after a music match Whether the actual recording and underlying work are cleared, and whether the relevant rights owner has allowlisted the channel in Content ID. Contact the rights owner and resolve the claim and allowlisting issue before restarting with that material.
The archive is missing or incomplete Whether the session ran for 12 hours or longer. Plan session length and transitions around archive needs; do not rely on one archive for a longer session.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the station’s program is prerecorded, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams each upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it does not replace the need to have rights to the music or address Content ID claims. Learn more at StreamNeo, then start your free day.
