You can stream a radio playlist to YouTube Live with GStreamer by playing each track, queueing the next URI before the current track ends, encoding and muxing the audio, then sending it to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Use an application that handles GStreamer’s playlist callback and bus messages; the exact encoders and sink available depend on your installed version and plugins, so there is no single command guaranteed to work unchanged everywhere.
How the streaming pipeline fits together
The basic path is: playlist entries → GStreamer playback and decoding → audio conversion and encoding → FLV muxing → RTMP or RTMPS output → YouTube Live. GStreamer provides the components, but you must select an encoder, caps, and output elements that are installed locally and accepted by YouTube’s current ingest configuration.
This is a software workflow, not a requirement to buy dedicated streaming hardware. If the process runs on your computer, that computer and its network connection must remain available for the stream to continue.
Check your GStreamer installation
Install GStreamer core and the playback, media-format, codec, muxing, and RTMP plugins your files require. Plugin names and availability vary by operating system and release. In particular, GStreamer documents rtmp2sink in the Bad Plug-ins package; do not assume it is installed.

Use gst-inspect-1.0 to inspect your local installation before designing the pipeline. Check for the playback components, chosen audio encoder, FLV muxer, and RTMP sink, and read their supported properties and pad caps. The installed elements—not an example written for another machine—determine which pipeline you can build.
Prepare the playlist for continuous playback
Use absolute URIs
GStreamer’s playbin accepts a URI, not a relative file path. Convert local tracks to absolute file URIs, or use valid network URIs for remote items. Keep playlist entries in an application-managed queue so the next item can be selected as playback progresses.
Queue the next track before the current one ends
Connect to playbin’s about-to-finish signal and set the next URI before the current item reaches its end. GStreamer describes this as its gapless queueing mechanism. The callback runs on a streaming thread, so keep its work small: retrieve or reserve the next item safely, set the URI, and hand off more complex playlist operations to an appropriate application thread. Protect shared queue access if the playlist can change while playing.

Queuing early can produce gapless-style playback, but it does not guarantee a silence-free boundary for every file. Buffering time, audio bounds, codec delay, and compressed-format frame sizes can affect transitions. Test the actual file formats you intend to broadcast.
Why restarting on end-of-stream can leave a gap
A simpler application may wait for an end-of-stream (EOS) message and restart playbin with the next item. That can introduce a pause between tracks. If you use this approach, manage playback and output states deliberately so the RTMP connection stays in the state you want during the transition.
Get YouTube’s current ingest details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Start or schedule the live stream using YouTube’s current workflow.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s live-stream settings define delivery details such as ingestion type and primary or backup endpoints. Do not copy an old URL from a third-party tutorial or hard-code a remembered endpoint.
- Pass the values to your application through protected runtime configuration. Treat the stream key like a password: do not put a real key in source code, a public example, logs, or a repository.
- Use the secure endpoint YouTube supplies when available for your workflow. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which protects the connection in transit.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes the live resource and its ingestion configuration at YouTube LiveStreams: list; use Live Control Room for the current URL and key you actually intend to stream to.

Build and run the output chain
In your application, connect playlist playback to the output chain supported by your local installation. A typical design decodes the selected audio, converts it as needed, encodes it with an available and compatible audio encoder, muxes the result into FLV, and sends that muxed output to an RTMP sink. GStreamer documents an RTMP2 output example that connects an FLV muxer to rtmp2sink.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchChoose the encoder, audio caps, and sink properties from the installed plugin documentation and YouTube’s current requirements. The supplied component documentation does not establish a universally tested, all-in-one gst-launch command, so do not treat a generic command line as guaranteed to work across installations. Keep the ingest URL and key in runtime configuration rather than embedding credentials in the pipeline text you share.
Monitor both sides of the connection
- GStreamer: watch the bus for errors and state changes; handle failures rather than assuming that a launched process means playback is healthy.
- YouTube: check Live Control Room’s stream health and confirm that the intended broadcast is receiving data.
- Viewer playback: check the live output from a viewer-side session to confirm that audio is actually audible and tracks advance as expected.
These checks cover different failure points: a healthy local pipeline does not by itself confirm that YouTube is ingesting and presenting the stream correctly.

Choose RTMP/RTMPS or HLS
| Ingest method | When it fits | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | The straightforward choice for a continuous live-encoder workflow. | Use the URL and key from Live Control Room. RTMPS encrypts the connection in transit. |
| HLS | You specifically need YouTube’s HLS ingest or a supported codec or feature that calls for it. | YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. YouTube states HLS has higher latency than RTMP; its developer guidance also specifies M2TS and codec constraints. |
For the ordinary playlist-to-live workflow, RTMP or RTMPS is the simpler route. YouTube’s current HLS requirements are documented in its HLS ingestion guide and HLS ingestion developer guide; verify them before implementing HLS because its segment and playlist rules affect the sender design.

A technically valid stream is not necessarily authorized. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a track described as “free” or purchased elsewhere is not automatically cleared for YouTube live use. YouTube may not know that you obtained permission through another source.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Confirm that the license explicitly covers the actual use: streaming the music live on YouTube. YouTube identifies public-domain music and music used with permission as copyright-safe approaches and recommends checking the applicable license. If a rights owner uses Content ID, ask whether your channel must be added to that owner’s allowlist. A licensed track can still interrupt a live stream if the channel is not allowlisted where required.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
playbin rejects a local track |
The URI is relative or malformed. | Use an absolute file URI; verify the file exists and that GStreamer has the decoder plugin for its format. |
| The next track does not start cleanly | The next URI was not set before the current track ended, or the format needs more buffering for a clean boundary. | Queue in about-to-finish, keep the callback responsive, and test the actual formats. Expect possible gaps with an EOS-and-restart design. |
| The output chain cannot be built | A required encoder, muxer, or RTMP sink is missing, or its caps do not match the next element. | Inspect local plugins with gst-inspect-1.0; confirm each element’s available properties and pad caps, then align the encoder output with the FLV muxer and sink. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The endpoint or key is stale, incorrect, or configured for a different stream; the output may also be failing locally. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check GStreamer bus errors and state changes, and review YouTube’s stream health. |
| The stream is interrupted after music starts | Content ID or a rights-owner restriction may apply even if music was obtained under a license. | Verify the license covers live YouTube use and ask the owner about Content ID allowlisting for your channel. |
