To run a Q&A on YouTube, start a live stream from YouTube Studio, open Live Chat, and choose Add → Start a Q&A. Enter a prompt, then select and pin questions from the Questions List as you answer them. A computer webcam is enough for a simple solo session; use an encoder if you need multiple cameras, external audio, overlays, or other production features.

Check that your channel can go live

Before planning the session, confirm that your channel is verified, has had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and that the person streaming is at least 16 years old. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console live-streaming routes; mobile has its own eligibility requirements. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

For a typical talking Q&A, a computer and webcam are sufficient. Choose an encoder workflow if you need external microphones or cameras, overlays, or more control over a multi-source production. YouTube describes equipment such as multiple cameras, a mixer, and a hardware encoder as options for more advanced productions, not prerequisites for a basic session.

Choose a streaming route

Route Best for What to plan for
Webcam A solo host running a straightforward computer-based Q&A. Choose the intended camera and microphone in YouTube’s webcam flow and check them before going live.
Encoder External audio or video equipment, overlays, or a more involved production. Copy YouTube’s stream URL and key into the encoder, then allow time to test the feed.
Mobile A quick update or mobile-first event. Mobile is convenient, but separate eligibility requirements apply.

These routes differ mainly in production complexity, equipment, mobility, and setup time. A more elaborate setup is not automatically better for a Q&A; use the least complicated route that meets your audio, camera, and presentation needs.

Create or schedule the YouTube live stream

For a webcam stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then choose Webcam.
  2. Enter the stream title and description, set visibility, and complete the other stream details.
  3. Select the camera and microphone you intend to use. Check that YouTube is receiving the correct picture and sound before starting.
  4. Choose whether to go live immediately or schedule the event if you want a shareable event page and the option for viewers to set reminders.

Follow YouTube’s current webcam live-streaming steps if the labels or layout differ in your account.

For an encoder stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab to create a stream or Manage to schedule one.
  2. Set the title, description, visibility, and other event details. Scheduling provides a shareable event page, and viewers may opt in to reminders.
  3. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. In your encoder, paste them into its YouTube or custom streaming destination fields.
  4. Start the encoder and check the incoming feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before the event begins.

A stream key is a credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Keep it private. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live-stream settings guide explain the workflow.

Set up Live Q&A and chat moderation

  1. Open the stream’s Live Chat panel and select Add → Start a Q&A.
  2. Enter a prompt that tells viewers what kinds of questions to ask, then start the Q&A.
  3. As questions arrive, open the Questions List, select a question, and pin it at the top of chat while you answer. Close its banner when you are finished with that question.
  4. When the Q&A is over, end it from the Q&A controls. Unanswered questions in the list are deleted when the Q&A ends; the session can remain available in Chat Replay.

YouTube describes the feature this way: “Live Q&A lets you find and select questions within your Live Chat to answer for your viewers.” See YouTube’s Live Chat and Q&A guidance.

Make chat workable for the host

  • Ask a trusted person to moderate if the host cannot comfortably speak, follow chat, and select questions at the same time.
  • Use slow mode if messages are arriving too quickly to follow. Subscriber-only chat can limit who participates; held messages let moderators review potentially inappropriate content.
  • Explain any participation limits before the Q&A so viewers know how to join in.
  • You can pin one ordinary chat message, such as instructions for submitting questions. Only the host can pin ordinary chat messages.

Review the available controls in YouTube’s live-chat moderation guidance.

Test the stream before the audience arrives

For an encoder event, YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Use that time to inspect the Live Control Room preview, confirm the event page on channel and watch pages, and check it on a mobile device. During the session, monitor audio and video quality.

  • Check outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate; this is operational guidance, not a guarantee against connection problems.
  • Listen for clear, undistorted speech and verify the correct microphone is active. Confirm that the camera framing and lighting are suitable.
  • Test the event’s visibility and make sure the intended viewers can access it.
  • Keep private information out of the picture and chat. Give channel access only to trusted people; YouTube says it will not ask for moderation privileges in the stream.

These testing and connection recommendations are covered in YouTube’s streaming tips.

Keep the Q&A easy to follow

Use the opening minutes to explain how to submit questions and what you will prioritize. If you have a moderator, have them select or group questions while you focus on answering. Read each selected question aloud or briefly restate it before responding so viewers who arrive mid-answer have context.

When chat is busy, curate questions from the Q&A list rather than trying to answer every chat message. For a guest conversation, YouTube’s Go Live Together feature supports a guest on a mobile stream, with one guest appearing at a time. The host remains responsible for the content on the stream. Check YouTube’s live-streaming guidance for current availability and requirements.

Understand latency, DVR, and chat replay

Latency is the delay between capture and playback. Lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, but may increase playback buffering. Test the behavior you plan to use and leave pauses for viewers to hear the question and respond. DVR lets viewers pause and resume during a live stream, which can mean their viewing position no longer matches the live chat in real time.

Chat replay can preserve chat alongside the archive and is on by default for live-stream archives, though the creator can turn it off. YouTube’s webcam and encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For the relevant settings and behavior, see YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance and chat and moderation guidance.

End the stream and retain the session

When the Q&A is finished, end the stream using the webcam controls or the Live Control Room and encoder workflow. If you want viewers to revisit the conversation, leave the archive and Chat Replay settings configured as intended. Check the resulting video’s visibility before sharing its link.

Or let it run in the cloud

A live Q&A is interactive, so you still need to host it in real time. If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded recordings between live events, StreamNeo runs those videos from the cloud rather than from a computer at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
