FFmpeg cannot create YouTube’s upload-based Premiere. For a true Premiere, upload the video in YouTube Studio, schedule it, and select Set as Premiere. If you specifically want the prerecorded file sent through an encoder as a live stream, you can use FFmpeg with a scheduled YouTube encoder event, its stream URL and key, and a real-time input option such as -re.
Premiere or live stream: choose the workflow first
YouTube uses Premiere for an uploaded video that viewers watch together at a scheduled time. FFmpeg does not feed a file into that feature. Sending a prerecorded file from FFmpeg to YouTube’s encoder ingest instead creates an encoder-originated live stream, even though the source is prerecorded. These are separate YouTube workflows. How to schedule a true YouTube Premiere
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and upload the finished video.
- Enter the video details.
- Choose Schedule, set the date and time, then select Set as Premiere.
- Share the resulting watch page so viewers can set reminders and join the live chat when the Premiere begins.
YouTube’s Premiere help page says Shorts are unsupported, as are 360/VR180 videos and output above 1080p. This Premiere limit is distinct from the resolution options for an encoder-originated live stream.

1. Create the YouTube encoder event
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy that event’s Stream URL and Stream key. The key authorizes an encoder to send a feed; treat it like a password. Do not use a key from an unrelated event. YouTube explains how to find and manage a stream key.
- Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP transport using TLS/SSL. Do not substitute an example endpoint. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
2. Run FFmpeg in real time
Replace input.mp4 with your file and replace the destination with the RTMPS URL and stream key copied from your own Live Control Room event. Keep the real key private; do not publish it in screenshots, logs, or shared shell history.

FFmpeg documents -re as reading input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), which is useful for real-time output. Its documentation also shows real-time RTMP output using -re, H.264, AAC, and FLV. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg protocol documentation.
The template uses H.264 video, AAC audio, and FLV muxing as a broadly applicable starting point. YouTube’s current encoder guidance also lists HEVC and AV1 video; use those only if your installed FFmpeg build supports the codec and the selected ingest mode accepts it.

3. Check the preview and launch the event
- Start FFmpeg sufficiently before the scheduled time to allow a connection and preview check.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Check both the picture and sound.
- When ready, click Go live in Live Control Room. Starting FFmpeg supplies the feed; it does not replace this launch step in YouTube’s scheduled encoder workflow.
- Monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the event. YouTube recommends testing beforehand and checking the preview before going live; see its live-streaming tips.
- At the end, stop the stream through the event controls and stop FFmpeg. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
FFmpeg and YouTube settings to check
YouTube’s current encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.

- Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate: Match them to the source and YouTube’s current encoder table rather than copying a high bitrate from another creator. Ensure your upload connection can sustain the feed.
- Keyframes: Aim for a 2-second interval and do not exceed YouTube’s recommended maximum of 4 seconds.
- Codec support: The example uses
libx264. Whether it is available depends on your local FFmpeg build; check the installed encoders and test the exact command and source before the event. - Stream key: Use the URL and key belonging to the event you are sending to. If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
Troubleshooting
FFmpeg connects, but no preview appears
Check that you copied the correct event’s RTMPS URL and stream key, that the event is set up for encoder input, and that FFmpeg is still running. Allow time for Live Control Room to receive and display the feed before the scheduled launch.

The preview appears, but the event is not public
For YouTube’s scheduled encoder workflow, the operator still needs to click Go live in Live Control Room after checking the preview. Starting FFmpeg alone supplies the feed; it does not perform that launch action.
FFmpeg reports that an encoder is unavailable
Your installed build may not include libx264. Check the encoders available in that build and test a compatible command before the event. The platform documentation cannot establish which encoders are present on your computer.

Video or audio quality is poor, or the stream is unstable
Check the source’s resolution and frame rate, the chosen codec and bitrate, and whether the connection can sustain the upload. Confirm the recommended keyframe interval, run a test, inspect the preview, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing and checking quality during setup.
The stream key may have been exposed
Treat the key as a credential. Reset it in Live Control Room, then update the FFmpeg destination with the replacement key before sending another feed.
