You can stream a prerecorded church service from a Windows laptop by playing the video in OBS Studio and sending OBS’s encoder feed to a YouTube Live event. First confirm the channel is eligible and that the recording’s music and other third-party content are cleared for this use. Then rehearse the complete path—file playback, sound, upload connection, YouTube preview and launch—before the service.
Before you set up OBS, check channel eligibility and content rights
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its stated minimum age for live streaming is 16. Complete any channel setup before service day rather than discovering an eligibility issue at launch. YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements provide the current details.
Clear music, video and other third-party material
A church setting does not by itself exempt a recording from copyright review. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a live stream.

If the material is licensed, ask the actual rights owner whether the YouTube channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a license alone may not prevent a live interruption if the owner has not allowlisted the channel; restricting the stream to territories where you hold rights does not remove that requirement. A receipt, attribution or general church permission is not proof that all uses in this particular recording are covered. The applicable Indian permissions depend on the repertoire and rights involved; confirm them with the relevant owner or a qualified adviser. YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams explains its platform process.

Prepare the prerecorded service in OBS Studio
Add the video as a Media Source
- Install and open OBS Studio on the Windows laptop. Create a scene for the service, or select the scene you intend to use.
- In the Sources area, select + → Media Source. Give the source a recognizable name and choose OK.
- In the Media Source properties, select the local recording file. OBS documents support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Confirm the chosen file actually opens and plays on this laptop.
- Set playback behavior deliberately. Media Source can loop a file and can restart playback when the source becomes active. Enable either behavior only if it is what you want; for a single service, verify what happens when the file reaches its end and whether it starts again.
- Check the preview for framing and confirm that the service audio is present and understandable. If the recording has multiple audio tracks or your scene includes other sources, test the actual mix rather than assuming the preview represents the final output.
OBS’s Media Source documentation describes these controls and supported formats, but it does not certify a particular file, scene or laptop configuration. Rehearse the whole recording through the scene and encoder you plan to use. OBS Media Sources documentation.
Create the YouTube Live event and connect OBS
Schedule the event or create it when ready
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live.
- Create an immediate stream, or open Manage and schedule a stream. Scheduling gives you an event/watch page to share in advance; use the event’s settings and visibility options that fit the congregation.
- In Live Control Room, select the encoder workflow and copy the displayed stream URL and stream key. Use the URL shown there rather than typing a server address from memory. YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it; the default displayed URL may be ordinary RTMP, so check the available option in Live Control Room.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube or the applicable custom service option, then enter the server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room. Apply the settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it in a public chat, and reset it if it is exposed.
YouTube’s encoder workflow covers creating or scheduling an event, connecting with the server URL and key, previewing and ending the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; copy the RTMPS address from Live Control Room if OBS supports it. YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Set video, audio and upload quality by checking YouTube’s current table
Do not choose a bitrate solely because a guide gives one number for India. YouTube’s recommended video bitrate varies by codec, resolution and frame rate. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; AAC or MP3 are listed audio codecs. Select settings OBS and the laptop can sustain, then check YouTube’s live table for the exact resolution, frame rate and codec combination you intend to send. YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table.
Test the laptop’s actual upload connection at the place and time you expect to stream. YouTube recommends keeping the combined stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth, with 20% headroom recommended in its streaming tips. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained performance during the event; local connection quality and service-plan performance in India vary. Keep OBS’s selected bitrate within the reliable capacity observed during rehearsal. YouTube’s encoder tips.

Rehearse the full broadcast before service day
- Use an unlisted test event if you want to verify the full path without making a public service event. Confirm its visibility and audience access in YouTube before sharing the link.
- Start streaming from OBS ahead of the intended start time. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room preview.
- Watch and listen to the preview: check that the picture is correct, the audio is clear and in sync, and the file is playing from the intended point. Check the watch page from a viewer’s perspective as well.
- Let the file play through its end during a rehearsal. Confirm whether it stops, loops or restarts as configured, and decide how the operator will end the live event.
- Monitor OBS and Live Control Room for stream-health warnings. If the feed stutters or drops in rehearsal, lower the encoder bitrate or improve the connection, then repeat the test.
YouTube recommends testing, previewing, checking the watch page and monitoring audio and video throughout the stream. Ethernet is an optional way to test a wired connection if the laptop and router support it; Wi-Fi can also work. Check the laptop’s ports and whether an adapter is needed before buying anything. YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.
Launch the scheduled event and end it cleanly
- At the service time, start OBS output and wait until Live Control Room shows the incoming feed and a usable preview.
- For a scheduled event, select Go live in Live Control Room only after checking the preview. Starting the encoder feed alone is not the same as starting the scheduled public event.
- During the service, keep an operator available to check the picture, sound and stream health. If YouTube reports a problem, use the preview and OBS status to distinguish an encoder or connection issue from a content interruption.
- At the end, end the event in YouTube Live Control Room and stop sending encoder content from OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No video in the OBS preview | The Media Source points to the wrong file, the format is unsupported or playback has not started. | Reopen the Media Source properties, verify the local file path and supported format, then restart playback. Test the selected scene again. |
| OBS is sending, but YouTube shows no preview | The server URL or stream key may be incorrect, or the encoder feed has not arrived yet. | Compare OBS’s stream settings with the URL and key shown for the current event in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; reset it if compromised. Wait for the preview before launching. |
| Picture stutters or YouTube reports poor stream health | The selected bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the connection may fluctuate. | Check the actual upload connection, lower the bitrate to a sustainable value, and rehearse again with YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom. Check the current bitrate table for the chosen codec and video settings. |
| Viewers hear no sound or audio is wrong | The file, scene mix or encoder output may not include the intended audio. | Listen to the OBS preview and YouTube preview; verify the source and audio meters during a full test. Confirm the selected audio codec is supported by YouTube. |
| The scheduled stream is not public at the expected time | The encoder feed may be running, but the event has not been launched from Live Control Room. | Check the event and preview, then select Go live in Live Control Room when ready. |
| YouTube replaces or interrupts the service | A live Content ID match or another policy issue may have been detected. | Review the alert and the material in the recording. Resolve rights with the actual owner; for licensed material, ask whether the channel can be allowlisted. Do not assume that restarting the encoder clears the underlying issue. |
