You can use a Synology NAS as a YouTube Live encoder only if your specific model, DSM version, available container software, and chosen encoder can handle the job. The dependable workflow is to create a program containing both podcast audio and video, send it through an encoder to YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then monitor the preview and stream health. If NAS compatibility is uncertain, encode on a computer instead; YouTube’s stream settings are the same either way.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to go live. It must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so set it up well before the broadcast. See YouTube live streaming tips.
  • A podcast audio source: microphones and a mixer or audio interface, or a computer-based production setup. Confirm that the host running the encoder can actually access the audio input.
  • A video signal to accompany the audio. For an audio-only podcast, this could be a title card, waveform, or other produced scene. YouTube Live needs a video feed as well as audio; a NAS does not automatically turn an audio file into a video program.
  • An encoder that can send the resulting audio-and-video feed to YouTube Live.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream bitrate, plus headroom.

Can I use my Synology NAS as a YouTube Live encoder? Possibly, but the NAS itself is not automatically an encoder. Synology’s Container Manager can download and run third-party images; whether a particular encoder image works depends on its requirements and the NAS model and DSM version. Synology directs users to the image provider for image-specific features and performance details. See Synology’s Container Manager image documentation. No model-independent promise about podcast encoding performance is established here.

Choose where the encoder will run

Consideration Encoder on Synology NAS Encoder on a computer
Compatibility Depends on NAS model, DSM and package availability, container architecture, and encoder requirements; verify them for your device. Synology documentation. Depends on the computer and selected encoder. YouTube documents software and hardware encoder approaches. YouTube encoder setup.
Audio input Confirm the host and container can access the microphone, mixer, interface, or other audio source. Generic Container Manager documentation does not establish this for a particular setup. Often a direct route for USB microphones and audio interfaces, but verify the chosen computer and encoder.
While live The NAS must remain powered, connected, and able to encode the selected program steadily. The computer must remain powered and connected throughout the broadcast.
YouTube output Configure the encoder with YouTube’s current URL, stream key, protocol, codecs, and output settings. The same YouTube output requirements apply.

If you do not know whether your NAS can handle the encoder and audio path, use a computer for the first broadcast. To assess NAS encoding, check the exact model and DSM version, whether Container Manager is available, the image’s supported architecture and requirements, the route for getting audio into the encoder, and whether it can produce the chosen output steadily. Generic Synology container instructions do not certify a particular encoder or resolution.

Prepare the podcast’s audio and video

Connect and check the audio source

Connect the microphones and mixer or interface to the computer or other production host that will supply audio to the encoder. Check the selected input and levels in the production or encoder software. If the encoder runs inside a NAS container, verify that the host and container can access the audio device; do not assume a USB device connected to the NAS will be available to the container.

Give an audio-only show a video feed

For a podcast without a camera, create a video scene such as a static title card or waveform and combine it with the podcast audio in an encoder. A camera scene is another option for a video podcast. The sources cited here do not provide a Synology-specific recipe for creating a still-image video scene, so use an encoder that supports the production you need and verify its audio and video output in a rehearsal.

Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. Check the current setup flow in YouTube’s encoder instructions.
  2. Retrieve the server URL and stream key from the event’s stream settings, then enter them in the encoder. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets an encoder send a feed. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots or publish it in a Compose file, and reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
  3. Choose RTMPS if the encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP transmitted over TLS/SSL. Copy the RTMPS endpoint from Live Control Room instead of assuming the default RTMP address displayed by an encoder is the secure endpoint. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Set the encoder’s stream output

Follow YouTube’s current recommendations and the values shown for your stream in Live Control Room. The recommendations below are platform guidance, not proof that a given Synology NAS can encode them. YouTube’s settings are documented at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Dual 2.5GbE ports provide fast network transfer speeds and increased redundancy.
  • Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
  • Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.
Setting Guidance
Protocol RTMP or RTMPS; prefer RTMPS when supported and use the endpoint provided in Live Control Room.
Video codec YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 among its encoder options. Confirm that your encoder and receiving setup support the option you select.
Audio codec YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its settings page recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio.
Rate control Use constant bitrate (CBR), as recommended by YouTube.
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
Example video setting For 720p at 30 fps, YouTube’s table gives a 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps maximum video bitrate. Select a stable value appropriate to your connection and current Live Control Room guidance.

Do not select a resolution or frame rate solely because the encoder offers it. The NAS or computer must sustain the encoding workload, and the connection must sustain the total output bitrate. Check YouTube’s current settings for the target resolution and frame rate rather than applying the 720p example to a different output.

Check upload bandwidth and rehearse

  1. Measure outbound upload capacity; download speed does not tell you how much data you can send reliably.
  2. Keep the total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. See Streaming tips.
  3. Use representative podcast audio and the intended video scene in a rehearsal. Check that speech is audible, the visual is correct, and YouTube’s preview and stream health show a usable feed.
  4. Use YouTube’s preparation timings as a planning guide: set up the encoder at least two hours ahead, start it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, and preview before going live. These timings are recommendations, not guarantees of a working connection. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Start, monitor, and end the broadcast

  1. Start the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive and process the preview.
  2. Check the preview, audio, video, and stream health in Live Control Room. Start the scheduled event there when the workflow requires it.
  3. Monitor the program while live, including whether audio continues and the visual remains present.
  4. When the show is over, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Do not confuse camera broadcast with podcast encoding

Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature is camera-oriented: its instructions describe selecting a camera, entering a YouTube RTMP path and key, and choosing a stream profile. The documentation says YouTube Live supports H.264 video. It does not establish that Surveillance Station accepts podcast audio or creates a still-image podcast video. It is also version 8 documentation, so check the installed Surveillance Station version and interface before relying on its steps. See Synology’s Live Broadcast instructions.

Troubleshoot common failures

The NAS cannot run the encoder

Likely cause: The model, DSM version, container architecture, package availability, or encoder requirements do not match. Fix: Verify each against the specific NAS and the image provider’s requirements. If you cannot confirm compatibility or stable encoding, move the encoder to a computer.

The stream connects but has no audio

Likely cause: The encoder selected the wrong input, the mixer/interface is not reaching the production host, or a container cannot access the audio device. Fix: Check the input device and levels on the host, then confirm the encoder receives that input. Rehearse through YouTube preview before the event.

YouTube does not receive a usable picture

Likely cause: The podcast audio was not combined with a video scene, or the encoder output does not match the selected video settings. Fix: Add a supported title card, waveform, or camera scene and verify the resulting preview and stream health.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The encoder cannot connect or YouTube shows no incoming feed

Likely cause: The URL or key is wrong, the key was reset, or the encoder is using an endpoint different from the one shown in Live Control Room. Fix: Copy the current server URL and key from the event settings, confirm the selected protocol and endpoint, and keep the key private.

The stream buffers or becomes unstable

Likely cause: Total bitrate is too high for the actual upload connection or the encoder cannot sustain its output. Fix: Check outbound upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test a stable bitrate that fits the connection and encoder.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your podcast is a prerecorded video you want to loop continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a different, simpler route: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera or microphone, so it is not a substitute for an encoder carrying a live podcast recording.
