To stream a podcast archive to YouTube Live with OBS, use a Media Source for one local audio or video file, or a VLC Video source for a playlist of files. Connect OBS to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, check YouTube’s incoming preview, and then start the event. Before you begin, confirm you have the rights to replay all music, clips, and other material in the archive.
Before you start: check YouTube access and rights
Your channel must be eligible to live stream: YouTube says it must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the account holder must meet its minimum age requirement of 16. Check the current status in YouTube Studio; eligibility and availability are account-specific. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
Confirm you have the necessary rights to every part of the archive, including the podcast recording, guest contributions, music, and third-party clips. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for necessary rights to live and archived content on the content provider. This is a platform requirement summary, not legal advice.
Choose the right OBS source
| Source | Use it for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local audio or video file | Supported format and playback options such as looping and restart behavior. |
| VLC Video | A playlist of multiple archive files | Playlist order, loop or shuffle behavior, and VLC installation. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
OBS lists common Media Source formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Consult the OBS Media Sources guide for source options and format details.

Set up the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Set the event title, visibility, and schedule as appropriate for your broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the encoder settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and stream settings help.
Build the OBS scene for one file
- Open OBS and choose or create the scene for the podcast broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source.
- Name the source, then browse to and select the local audio or video file.
- Choose playback behavior in the source properties. Enable Loop if the file should repeat; enable Restart playback when source becomes active if it should begin at the start whenever activated. Set Show nothing when playback ends if you do not want the source’s last frame to remain visible. Close file when inactive can release the file while the source is not active.
- Click OK and confirm the file plays from the intended point. For video, resize and position it in the preview; add episode art or a static title only if useful.
OBS displays sources higher in the list over sources beneath them, so arrange artwork and text above the video source when they should appear on top. See the OBS Sources Guide.
Build a playlist for multiple archive files
- Install VLC before setting up the source. The VLC Video source is only available when VLC is installed; OBS specifies matching architecture, so 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select + in the Sources panel → VLC Video.
- Add the archive files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Choose whether the playlist should loop or shuffle, and set its visibility behavior as needed.
- Test playback through the playlist, including the transition between files and what happens at the end.
The Media Source and VLC Video options, including their playback controls, are documented in the OBS guide.

Connect OBS and check the preview
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
- Select YouTube as the service and enter the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, or use the connection method offered by your OBS and YouTube setup.
- Use RTMPS when available; YouTube currently recommends RTMPS for encoder delivery.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the incoming signal to appear in Live Control Room, then inspect the preview and stream health. Use Go live in YouTube where required by the selected event setup.
- Check the OBS audio mixer meters while the archive plays. Confirm the audio is audible and that the video, if present, is framed correctly. Run a short test before your first public event.
Do not assume one resolution or bitrate fits every archive and connection. Match the output to the source properties and your upload capacity, using YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution recommendations. YouTube also recommends testing, previewing the signal, and monitoring stream health in its streaming tips.

YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining the complete broadcast matters, enable a local recording in OBS and make sure the computer has enough free storage for the full event. YouTube explicitly recommends recording a local archive as a backup: see Archive live streams.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
During the event, check that the local recording is progressing and that its file size is increasing. Stop the stream and recording through the OBS and Live Control Room flow for your event. An external drive is an optional destination if your existing storage is insufficient; YouTube does not prescribe a particular drive or capacity.
Common problems and fixes
- Media Source is silent: Check that the source is playing and that its audio meter moves in OBS. Confirm the correct file was selected and that audio is not muted in the mixer.
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, then ensure its architecture matches OBS. Restart OBS after installing if the source is still unavailable.
- The file ends and the scene goes blank or holds the last image: Review the Media Source end-of-playback settings. Enable looping for continuous replay, or set the end behavior intentionally rather than relying on the final frame.
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS, confirm OBS is streaming, and look at YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health information. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- The stream stutters or loses quality: Check YouTube’s stream health, test the upload connection, and choose encoder settings appropriate to the connection and source rather than forcing a higher output setting.
- The YouTube archive is missing: If the stream exceeded 12 hours, YouTube says it may not have been captured. Use a local OBS recording when a complete copy is important.
- Copyright or eligibility prevents the event: Verify the channel’s live-stream access in Studio and review rights for music, guests, clips, and other third-party material before retrying.
